A fascinating look at how social order is built on the friction of dominance and resource control. It proves that hierarchy isn't just a human construct, but a biological necessity for managing group stability.

Mayo is out..Added:
Good morning goat lovers. Derek here with Blue Cactus Dairy Goats and I am in Bend, Oregon where we are dropping off Ruger Raven and Ruby Monae with their new owners Deb and Randy. And if you'd like to follow these goats and their adventures and some other artsy stuff that uh Deb does, you can go over to Albbright Farm Studios and check them out.
>> There'll be lots of videos on there of them growing up. Look at Raven.
So cute.
>> Is there anything you'd like to say to my wife?
>> Thank you so much, Crystal. I love everything you do and how you care for all your babies. You do a wonderful job and I love your soaps, too.
>> Well, hello goat lovers. I am walking out to check on all of the goaties. Um, especially my doe's, my milker girls because they have been on one lately and they have not been nice to each other at all at all. So, they are trying to reestablish a new hierarchy and and it's taken them a while to figure it out.
Well, hey girl. Can I come in? You girls look like they're doing all right right now. How you doing, Mercy?
She's doing good.
and you Marsha. Marsha and Moby Mulby. So, it's been a couple hours since we milked these dos out and it looks like they they have calmed down a little bit. Um, but man, they have just been walloping each other. You're not even going to let me film you, are you? You're just going to try to be on top of me, huh? Silly girls. Have mercy.
These girls have not been getting along at all. Like, at all. and the hierarchy is changing daily it feels. I can't say I've really ever seen it take this long for them to figure it out. Um, but there's a couple really honory ones and they're pretty headstrong, if you will.
So, they are wanting to fight for dominance lately and it's been going on for a couple weeks actually. And beyond that, if you guys hear all of the babies screaming, it's not all of the babies.
What it is is the bucklings because bucklings are loud and we have very recently we've started weaning a couple weeks ago. Um so at 8 weeks old we will wean from the milk for multiple different reasons. I'll have to do a video on that. And also we separate the bucklings from the dolings. So because nobody wants babies getting pregnant. That's just horrendous, right? Don't want to deal with that. I don't see Oh, you see that? That's what I'm talking about right there. Mia in particular is one of the mean girls now. Mhm.
Hi, Dosy. What the heck is her problem?
Wow, you are so close.
Hi.
You're so pretty, girl. She's so pretty.
So, is that is that the problem, Mia? Is it Is it cuz she's so pretty? But you're pretty too, little stinker.
All right. So, we got Mia here who has been very very dominant lately. Um, and that's kind of out of her character to be honest. She's not ever really been one of the doe's that's like I want to be in charge, but currently that is the stance she's taking. She wants to be top dog and there is absolutely no question.
And lucky us, it is another gorgeous windy day blowing all kinds of dust around because we don't have grass around here. We have dirt and wind and dust and cactuses and gories that want to chew on you.
Yes. Get lost, girl. It actually kind of looks like a lot of these girls are just chilling, which makes me happy because if they're chilling, they're not trying to beat each other up. Huh? What's going on, Moby?
I love her. Now, Moby is not one of the dominant ones. She likes to just kind of move to the side and let the other mean girls uh do their thing. And she's just like, "Keep me out of it, man."
Daisy, that's another story. Not only are these girls mean girls lately, uh, but around me, they the younger ones, the yearlings and the first fresheners, if you will, so some of them are too. They've been very, very clingy. They're like, "Mom, these girls are not acting right." And in addition to that, they themselves have been really honory to each other.
So, it's been driving me nuts. I can't stand it when they want to be mean to each other, but honestly, there's nothing I can do about it. They just have to figure it out. So, right now in this pen, we have 12 milkers.
And Mercy here really, really wants to eat my shirt. But anyway, we have 12 milkers in this pen. So, every day it's changing when I'm like, "Okay, this is it. I can see who's who's going to be, you know, in charge." and you can kind of tell the order if you will and then the next day it changes.
So, a big sign is when they actually get up on the milk stand. Um, and sad to say you guys, Mayo is not first on the milk stand anymore. And it's because she is not herd queen anymore.
I was just talking about you, Mayo. What are we doing?
Oh, she's a good girl. I think they know who the herd queen is. However, everybody else in the pecking order is still trying to get their placings. I guess they've been really honory.
Really, really honory. So, I know they just went through their heats, uh, the majority of them, and so that will always cause them to be a little stinker. Uh, but, you know, they PMS, if you will. So, it's past that and they're still very, very, very honory with each other. So, I've been checking on them a lot just to see. I just want them to calm down to be honest. I don't like it when they're mean to each other. It drives me nuts.
But the problem is is there's nothing I can do about that. Um, they are going to have to figure it out themselves. And so, I'm really hoping that they get it established very, very soon here because it's been going on for a couple of weeks. And it all happened when Miss Daisy became a permanent champion. Yep.
She came home a champion and that was it. She was like, I am the new herd queen around here. There is no question about it. Where it was her and Mayo kind of going back and forth, but Mayo was definitely still in charge. And now it's it's definitely Daisy. So Daisy is for sure the new herd queen, aren't you? So anyway, Miss Daisy here knows that she's in charge and everybody else still needs to just kind of figure out who's below her in what order. And man, it's taking them forever, isn't it, Daisy? You're just coming in here to make sure nobody else gets gets Mom, huh? Cuz you might beat them up, but that wouldn't be very nice. You're so gorgeous. Peachy has not really been taking a bunch of crap. If somebody's trying to pick on her, she will still rear up at them and maybe give a headbutt or two and then take off. But nonetheless, she is definitely Oh, really? Mayo.
I was just telling them she sticks up for herself a little, but not to you, I guess.
And no, I didn't tell them. No, you are still her queen. I'm sorry, Mayo. Look at her all mad at me. I'm sorry. I love you. Look at these girls.
So, Mayo being 8 years old, I think she has recognized that she's not quite as strong and also they just kind of calm down a bit when they get older. um you know, not necessarily wanting or giving a crap about having the spot of herd queen where this girl, she does care. She wants it. She wants that spot and she has it. These two have become besties and it's really really cute. Um if anybody tries to get up on Mayo or up in her face, Miss Daisy handles that, huh? So the only one that gets to mess with mayo is Daisy.
Daisy wants lots of attention today, don't you?
Pepper.
Hey, are you supposed to be in that feeder?
No.
Yeah. Let's get down and poke your bum.
Come on. You get out of that feeder.
Thank you. And then there's Mia. Now, Mia here has became very dominant, you guys. So, so dominant. Um, she definitely has changed her personality.
Okay, now I'm just being eaten. But Mia's personality has changed drastically. Before Mia would just kind of be pretty chill and she didn't really try to get into any squables, if you will. U but now, most of the time, I'm seeing Mia right there. She's always headbutting somebody in the bum or just kind of sideswiping them out of the blue and not being very nice. Huh, Mia? Not at all. I really think Mia wants to be second. Um, like I said, everybody knows that Daisy's in charge, but but Mia, if there wasn't a Daisy, I'm pretty sure Mia would have that slot. So, anyway, she's been kind of honory and it's been a little bit out of her character. So, she's just kind of taking on a new a new personality, I guess, huh, baby?
Of course, you're still the sweet girl to me, just not the other ones. And then here is Dosey. Now, this is Daisy's daughter. Look how gorgeous. Oh my gosh, Daisy is so pretty. So Dosey actually looks a lot like her mama, but of course she's a year old and Daisy is five now.
So, but their confirmation is really taking on uh very similar very similar body styles and I love it because I'm really in love with Daisy's deep body and I'm pretty sure Dosey is going to have the same body structure which I am not upset about. So, another thing to factor in, to be honest, is the fact that there are three yearlings, four 2-year-olds, and then four, five seniors. So, the seniors being as just the older girls, four, five, and 8 years old. So, the younger ones are feeling it because the older girls are like, I'm I'm in charge. You are not getting the food first. You are not getting up on the milk stand first. You are not. You are not. You are not. I don't like the way you're laying there. This is my spot under the A-frame. This is my spot on top of the A-frame. It's kind of how they're acting. So, not very nice. Not very nice at all. Daisy and and Mayo actually get along really, really good, which I love because I am just not okay with anybody picking on Mayo. I'm just going to be open about that cuz she is a good girl. and she, like I said, is 8 years old. So, she's kind of getting up there in age. And it's it's kind of breaking my heart. I hate to see a dominant dough that's been the herd queen. Um, kind of taking a backseat, if you will. It is what it is, and it's it's definitely part of it. It's how it happens, but doesn't mean I have to like it, huh, Daisy? But as long as Daisy is being nice and she knows that Mayo needs to be taken care of. So Daisy does not pick on her and she just kind of sticks up for her if any of the other girls are trying to get mouthy with her.
Daisy's like, "Oh, no you don't."
She'll jump right in and she handles that. And Mayo's like like she's loving it because she has a bodyguard. So it's kind of nice for her. Now Mercy, she can't wait till she gets bigger.
That's That's what it is. She says just you wait because she ain't gonna be taking no crap when she gets a little bigger. Are you, Mercy? No, she's not.
No. No.
You like it right there, little scratchy scratchy. Hi, baby.
You guys, I can't tell you how excited I am about the way this girl is developing now. They were milked out a couple hours ago, so nobody has an udder right now.
And especially with her standing like that. But her tea placement is glorious.
I know people were worried about how it was looking when it was coming in as a as she was getting closer to having her babies, but I can't wait to see a mature udder off of this girl because it is so gorgeous, isn't it? Oh, right there. So anyway, Mercy here, she she doesn't want to take any crap. So she really would like to fight. You see this?
See, look at Mia.
I feel like you kind of back down right there a little bit. Did she get you in the face just right? Hey, Marsha.
Marsha.
Anyway, uh Mercy does not want to take any crap, but she does know her limit.
She's very aware that say uh Mia or Daisy could just totally wall up her, but Mercy is also smart enough to know that she has to put up a little bit of a fight because she can't completely get bullied. Huh. These girls are being much much nicer right now than I expected them to be because they have just not been nice at all. Look, check them out.
They're going to eat right where Wy was eating. There's a whole feeding trough, but they got to get up there where Willy's eating just just because.
Just because.
I swear, girls. And then there's Marsha.
Marsha. Now, Marsha. Marsha has really kind of hit the ground dominant.
So, with all the kids, she was dominant uh when she was, you know, younger and she was dominant with all of the yearlings. And now she's just kind of been like the last to get up on the stand the last few days and she just kind of stands back like so it's actually surprising me because I would never have assumed she would would cower period. Now I don't know that cower is the right word but uh she does stand back. She doesn't want to want to fight the bigger girls at all.
Whereas that wasn't the case just about a week ago. So, she certainly must have gotten put in her place recently, huh? And she was like, "Okay, fine.
Fine."
Like, honestly, if you had to guess who was in charge with the 12 doese's, like Marsha, Marsha would have been right up there at the top. and just the past few days like she's she's not somebody threatened you real good I guess. Hi Mina. Oh that was nice of you. That was nice. She sneeze all over me. Yeah. And even the look on her face. Look at her snarky little thing. You're just snarky.
I love you.
Henry. You're so honory.
Mhm. Right now, it just totally feels like uh Daisy's in charge. Mayo's just kind of a floater, if you will, and nobody is to mess with her. Uh cuz Daisy isn't going to have it.
Mia, she's she's just wants to be in charge.
For sure. For sure. And she would appreciate Daisy just stepping down because that would be that would be ideal for you, wouldn't it, girl? Yes.
Little stinker. So now Mayo is claiming mom.
Huh? Baby, look at you, Mia. That's what I'm talking about. You're lucky Daisy didn't see that.
Mhm.
See, now Mayo a year ago would have just kicked her butt and now you're doing it.
This is what I'm talking about, you guys. Now you get my leg. That's not nice. Mayo.
And Peachy's a funny girl. She's a funny girl. She has definitely gotten more brave this pitchy pitchy. Huh, Miss Funny, funny girl. So PJ is adorable.
She puts her um her mohawk up, you guys. Look at her bleach blonde mohawk. Do you see it? Can we get you mad? Can we get you mad so we can see that stick up? Cuz it's glorious. It's so long. Look at her. So when she gets mad, all of her bleach blonde mohawk just sticks up all ferocious. What is that? Is that funny?
See, like Peachy just bit Marsha right there. And Marca didn't do anything about it, which again is completely out of her character. I don't like it at all. Um, and I hope they figure it out pretty soon so that they can get back to, you know, just being chill.
But uh we'll see. We'll see how long this takes because it's just getting really annoying for me. For me right here. I come out and check on them frequently lately because sometimes there's just an allout brawl going on and you're ruining my shirt. Peachy ruining it. And I have to kind of squirt them with the hose. I do that. And it works for a second, you know, and it might break it up, but I mean, honestly, there's really not a lot that you can do because because Jos's eating me alive.
Hey, can we stop? Hi, Ren. Now, Ren doesn't care about anything. She is like that one. You're not going to see her in the fight typically. Um, she's so sweet.
She's so nice. And Dosy, you're being a stinker. You want to say hi, Revy?
Now, Revel is staying away from me because these girls have been mean lately. So, look at her.
You guys know that Revy loves her mom.
And she's not even going to come over here. Revel. Hey, girl.
So, Ren, other than being a stinker on the milk stand, has been an angel to be honest. She's She's not caused any problems for anybody really. Huh. This sweet girl. And then here's Peachy again trying to assert her dominance cuz little tiny Peachy I think has figured out that she needs to be meaner if she's going to be little.
Look at her. That's what I'm saying.
Like for no reason. Oh, now she's biting Marsha.
Who would have ever thought? Okay, get that up. Get more mad. We got to see that. Glorious.
Glorious.
Watch. You see how dominant Peachy has be become. And I don't think anybody really cares.
But nonetheless, she she doesn't want to be messed with. And this is kind of how they've been acting. And I don't like it.
Peach's ready to fight everybody.
She's like this little tiny thing. Oh my gosh. The mohawk. That's what I'm talking about. Look at that.
You are funny, Peachy. You're funny. And she's actually growing a lot, you guys.
So, if you see Mercy compared to Peachy, Peachy is going through a growth spurt big time since she had her babies. She lost all that fluffy hair. She grew her mohawk to make her look bigger and tougher.
And her attitude got bigger and tougher, too. Huh? Oh, are you getting in between me and the little ones?
See, Mercy's like, "Nah."
But she goes away cuz, like I said, she's smart enough to know not to fight her, but she at least has to say a mean word to her. Yeah. She's at least got to call you a name, right? And then run away. Well, I'm trying to come say hi to you, but you're going to run cuz the other girls are following. Hi, baby.
Hi, baby.
Hi, sweet girl. And Revel also kind of like Ren there, man. So, kind of like Ren, she doesn't want no drama.
Daisy, on the other hand, is drama. And Miss Whey, she's still a sweet little girl, aren't you? Yeah.
She's not pregnant. No. No, she's not.
Still has a big old belly. I love you.
That face. That face is precious. You know that, Wy. When they do get brawling pretty good, I just want them to stop.
So, I will hose them down, but it really doesn't do much. It kind of makes me feel better to see them scurry and you know, but then they go right back at it.
So, like I said, it's not like it mercy just trying to eat the camera. Stop.
No. But other than that, I will say the the first fresheners have taken to being milkers very well. very well. Ren is a work in progress. Uh, but Mercy's happy feet, too. And Dosey is also happy feet.
But nobody as bad as Ren. Revel is an angel. An absolute angel on the milk stand. She might be the best dough period. Even um beyond the the senior doe's that should definitely be acting right at this point. Uh but they all kind of go in and out. Not revel. She's perfect. But they all kind of go in and out just depending on their mood for the day and and they got mood swings, man.
They got some serious mood swings. So just depending on the day, they're all doing really great, but they're all really on me is the moral. That's the moral right there. So I just wanted to jump in here and let you guys hang out with the doe's with me while I checked on them because I've been doing a lot of checking on them and even right now I hear it. I hear it. Somebody's getting beat up over there. Fancy seeing you here. Mhm.
Poor Marsha.
I don't know what happened to her, but she is not very dominant these days.
So maybe she'll get it back, huh? You sweet girl. I love you. And as for Derek, he is doing really good. He is quite the beast with his deliveries, man. He He makes some really, really good time. And I don't know, not everybody can sit behind a wheel and just drive and drive and drive like that. And and like I said, he is good at it. And that's what's going on here right now, you guys. So, let's check back in with Derek. And other than that, we'll see you again soon.
>> All right. After, I don't know, six, seven more hours of driving, I am in Portola, California, where I'm dropping off my final two goats with Karen. Um, I believe her daughter is the one that purchased these. Is that right?
>> Well, I know I for she does the bike.
>> Okay, I know how that is. Anyway, she had a flat tire so she couldn't be here, but mom was nice enough to come meet me and pick up the goats. We are dropping off little desert rain here in Malberry Millie.
>> Malberry Millie.
>> All right.
Well, it's been fun. Goats, they are anxious to get out of here. I I tell everybody my our secret is you put them in a metal box and shake them for like 3,000 miles and then when I hand them off to you, they love you forever.
>> Forever. You want to go see some mountains, be mountain goats.
>> So, that's our last drop off on this uh this trip. I'm headed to the Reno area somewhere to find a beer and a burger.
And uh tomorrow I'm going to head back to the ranch. Thanks for watching, guys, and we will see you again in the next one.
