This is what I tried to get.
>> Beautiful lake trout.
>> It ate something.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
Turn left.
>> I just blinded myself.
sense. I mean, it's cold, but it ain't that cold.
>> No, I know. It doesn't make any sense at all.
Folks, things are not shaping up good today. I don't really know what's going on here. We seem to be having kind of a bad luck streak. We wanted to go out fishing, pike fishing at a cool new lake this year and we tried that probably like two weeks ago and just got like completely wasted a few miles in and overflow. We actually like snapped our comealong and considered walking out.
But we did get out. We went back to go ice fishing at a different lake that we've been to before. Went to set up our spear fishing tent and everything and the augur, the actual pull cord snapped.
And Eric tried everything he could to get it rerung and get it going. Almost went, but it didn't go and it just kind of completely like broke into smitherines. So, we packed up and went home. And now we are hundreds of miles out here trying to go to a hot springs.
It's bitterly cold. And for some reason, the machines won't start, which makes absolutely no sense. We're trying to just let them warm up in the sun and see what's going to happen because if we can't get them started, we obviously can't go on the trip. So, we have to head home. I think it's colder than saying it's colder because like the gas caps are usually like rubber and soft.
They're solid. They're hard. Like the rubber's hard. It's cold out here. I think bad fuel.
>> I'm think I'm thinking it was really bad fuel cuz I only put like two gallons in your >> Doesn't make any sense though. It's like I put really bad water in there.
>> Gas off real quick.
>> The gas. We got gas after that. Are you certain it's not that gas?
>> The only thing we can do is take these home, drain the gas out completely, and then try putting your gas in.
>> You don't think putting heat or nothing will do? Nothing?
>> I don't think that's going to make it.
If the gas is that bad, I don't think a bottle of heat's going to do anything.
>> Okay.
Let's make sure he's dead.
>> Wow, it's a big animal. Look at his tail.
>> That's a really big fox.
Female. Looks like a female. I can't really tell.
>> That's a huge hawks.
Yeah, I got him in the head. He was hunting tigan.
>> Do they always have black paws like that?
>> No. This This is a beauty.
Unbelievable that we saw this fox out here.
>> He left that first point and went up and over over there and then he walked down this ridge over here.
>> He was like, you were on that side so he didn't want to go that way. I was on that side so he didn't want to go that way. He was just sitting on the top. She was >> she it a little >> Well, you got it on the first shot though, hun.
>> Folks, it's been a long time coming, but I finally got myself a fox. It's going to go on a hat made out of this and some of a our beaver pelts that Arrol got ready for us. I've probably tried to shoot a lot of foxes. I'm pretty sure all of them were on our property cuz they come and kill our chickens all the time. Today, we're not on our property.
We're out on a different adventure and we happened to see this guy from really far away. It was hunting a big flock of Tarmagan and then we came in and we hunted him. And it's also the last day of fox season, so it ends at midnight tonight. Pretty stoked.
Okay, I'm going to see if I can put him there.
clam.
Clack All right, if you can believe it or not, Eric caught a second fox. Uh, I don't know what kind it is. He was the only one that saw it and then he kind of just took off. So, we will see when he gets here.
That was insane.
>> Are you okay?
>> I got stuck.
>> You got stuck?
>> I got stuck right there. So, I was digging out and then you didn't hear my machine pull throttle.
>> I was doing like a mile an hour. This snow is so soft right here. I was just sinking in. That was crazy. One shot.
>> Is that a different color? Is that a crosswalk?
>> Yeah, he's cross.
>> It's a crossbox.
>> Oh god, scared me.
That's a black and >> Yeah, he's black and orange. The fox is so big here.
>> I saw something that looked kind of just like a little color sitting there and I was like that kind of looked like a fox maybe like that laid down cuz it heard us coming and then as soon as I went up there he was like down the hill and he was freaking gone taking off. I got to a good spot and he was he was literally running as I shot him. He was getting further and further away. I was like if I don't shoot now I'm not going to get him. And I just I literally led right in front of him and I shot. He was sprinting and he just nose dive and died.
>> That's insane.
>> Well, he didn't die. I hit him in the head with a hammer. But >> wow. And these are two really nice boxes you got.
>> Look how black it faces.
>> I know. What a beautiful animal.
They must be eating farming out here. I think those are balls right there.
>> That's a boy.
>> That's a male.
4,000 mi. They started having problems on you, huh?
>> Does she have 4,000 on her?
>> You got 4,200. I got 4700.
Yeah.
>> Yeah. Number one, honey.
>> We have a shower. Nice and warm in here.
>> Oh, we have a deck on this side.
>> Wow.
Very nice.
This is really nice. The lights right there.
Wow.
Sure. There's no one in there.
>> Is there anyone?
>> No.
Little bit of creme.
Our adventures continue. My snow machine started up this morning and we are headed out to a glacier. This area we're hanging out is a heavily traffic spot in the summer, but the road or the highway is not plowed in the winter, so it pretty much closes down. The lodge owners do groom it. A lot of folks do travel these parts via snow machine and it is my type of riding. Super fast, super smooth. It's like the easiest riding ever. So, we're going to see what kind of shenanigans we get into today and head off. Get going.
>> That's not good.
Got to leave it running.
Yeah, they have such a unique footprint.
See that? How it's like a cone with the claws? Their claws are really stick out.
Heat.
Heat.
Oh, it's so blue.
>> That is really scary.
>> I guess this is all melted. I guess cuz of the sun.
>> Melted cuz of the sun.
>> Yeah.
>> Oh, look at the ice right here. How smooth it is.
I didn't see my strawberry.
Oh, piece of ice.
Go that way.
>> Do you see light? No.
>> Oh my gosh.
Freaking scary.
>> Neat. I wonder if the special is going to be spaghetti again.
>> Why would it be the same? I'm going to be real with you. I'd eat that again. It was delicious.
>> They do it. You think they change it every night?
Goodbye.
Oh, what a cool area, huh?
Heat.
Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat. Heat.
Heat.
Heat.
You didn't see it.
>> Look like a caribou or something, right?
Those are tracks right there. No, >> I can't see it. If that's them, >> see the tracks.
>> Oh yeah, they're straight across.
>> It's a moose. It's like a really dark moose. Elizabeth bear. Oh my gosh. I really thought it was a bear.
>> I couldn't see it from that fire. I just saw something.
>> Just crossed. Yeah. Is it him or a girl?
>> I couldn't tell. I just saw walking through.
That's funny. You can see him, huh?
>> Huh?
>> Oh, I just said that's funny. You can see him. I got like stuff to bring over here. You want me to start bringing it?
>> Doesn't want to open. Oh, wow. Do you see them, bud? Let me see them.
Desire.
650 miles later, we are back. We are loaded and strapped down. The trail is just a short jaw away. We're definitely hoping to get to the hot springs today.
That was the first time Eric and I have ever had bad fuel like that. So bad that it shut us down completely. So, we were a little bit dumbfounded. Um the machines obviously wouldn't start at all. Eric had to go back and do a whole bunch of stuff and take all the gas out of them. His machine only got two gallons from the gas station that was the culprit. Mine got like half a tank.
So, needless to say, it was a total headache, but it's absolutely beautiful today. Much better weather than we could have hoped for. And we're going to head out and hopefully make it there.
We're going to have to go in reverse regardless. I'm just asking you.
If I can get past you. Not sure I'll fit. You can hook my hus We made it to the hot springs. Our tent is just over there.
Already run some stuff over here.
Well, it is a miracle that we actually got out here. A little bit of a rustic hot springs. Eric is making himself a sandwich. He was taking a nap.
Unfortunately, he doesn't feel very good. He got the flu a few days ago and we still opted to come out here, but the trail not so good. I got to be honest, we're really weak coming through winter.
We were weak going into winter. I feel like the best representation of what I feel like is an injured animal. So, not good at all. Usually, a lot of our trips happen mid- winter. So, you know, November, December, January in the the depths of winter, right? But the most popular season is for sure February, March, and April. And I can definitely see why, you know, you got light on your side, you got warmth on your side. It's a nice temperature in here. I could take it a little bit warmer. At least we didn't make it out that day that it was like negative30. is I imagine that these natural hot springs, they do kind of fluctuate when it is a lot colder like that. And you know, right now I'm guessing I'm guessing it's maybe like under 100° or so.
I walked in that way. Did you see it's really slippery on the way in? My flip-flops are like absurdly slippery.
You made it out here fast. You already eat.
>> I ate. Oh, I got a mountain house seeping.
You got out here.
I think it's coming in now.
>> It's really hot right here through your feet down this hole.
>> Is it? Well, I'm comfortable. My feet just got a little frigid. I had to make two trips over here with all my gear.
Is that a hot spot? Just curious.
>> Yeah, >> this is a really hot spot. I saw the main bubbles I saw go right there. So, I see it makes sense.
I mean, this is really hot, too, when you get down low.
There's some really sharp logs here.
Oh god, that's not solid.
>> No, it's all snow there.
>> Icy cold towel.
Okay, let's go.
Is it frozen?
>> Not really. Is that good enough?
>> So, these are supposed to be sloppy joe's, but they have barbecue sauce, stewed tomatoes, Swiss cheese on a potato bun, and what's what's the meat? I think it's carrot >> black bear.
>> It's black bear. And we spent four hours in the hot springs. Long time. Surprised we're not prince.
Thank you. Did you just dry it? No.
>> No, but I mean it's not stopping. We try more.
Where do you think it's going to be tonight?
Temperature? Well, it says like -10, but I don't know. That's not really this exact area.
Definitely be zero. It is supposed to be windy tomorrow afternoon, so we got really lucky that it's not windy today.
>> There's probably someone that doesn't like bread, cheese, bare meat, barbecue sauce, tomatoes, or garlic.
>> Not a lot of people like tomatoes cuz they're acidic.
>> I don't think so. Do a real thin one.
Okay. See where that gets us.
I said, "Did you I said it's so nice cuz it's in the sun right now. I don't think you'd be cold at all."
>> It's like really nice in here now. It's probably even warmer than last night. It was completely clear. It like totally um settled.
You know what I mean? YOLO. I was literally gonna come get you and say you should come in. It's so It was So, see how clear it is? It was clear before I walked in it.
>> Yeah. It's way clear, huh?
>> It's like But you're in the sun. Look at this.
>> Got a floater.
>> What do you think of? You don't think you want to join me?
>> No.
>> You sure?
>> I'm sick.
>> I know you're sick.
>> Sucks getting cold.
>> It's like a shiver effect. It just messes with you, huh? Yeah.
>> Okay, I'll just spend like five minutes.
Man, it's freaking nice in here, though.
>> Looks nice.
I might spend all my time out here if we lived out here or something.
I think it still hurts to that side.
We're off. We're off. Yeah.
Oh, it's 16°.
What the Hey, motor.
Round two. We're out here trying to do some pike fishing. We've got old trusty up and running again. We originally thought we were going to go ice fishing like right after this broke down and we had to order this whole new pull start assembly for it and it was going to take a while to get here. So, we ended up buying another augur. They didn't have uh the gas ones in stock. Since it's kind of the end of ice fishing season, they're switching over. All they had was the Eskimo 10-in battery powered augur, the composite one, which we've never used. We're kind of excited to try it out. We'll see how it does out here today. There's pros and cons to gas and battery. Obviously, this one is a very uh trustworthy augur to us. We've literally drilled hundreds of holes and just beat on this thing. and you just put gas in it and it doesn't matter if it's, you know, 20, 30, 40 below, it'll start up and you can drill your holes.
The battery powered augers, like I said, not much experience with them, but if it's like any other battery that we own, you do have to keep them warm and the cold will affect them. This gas powered augur, it weighs in a little over 35 lbs. And the battery powered composite augur, it only weighs 15 lbs. So, we're going to get this hole drilled because we need our extension and we only have an extension for this augur. There's actually about eight inches of snow on top of this ice. We're not sure how thick the ice is, but it's it's really thick. And then we'll get the electric one out and we'll see how that one does.
No, not deep enough.
She's making us work for it today, that's for sure. What do they say?
Fourth times the charm. This, I think, is going to be our final hole since we spent so much effort on it.
>> It's our final hole. We're not fishing.
>> Okay. And the first one was only like 2 ft below the ice, popped over like 150 ft, and we dropped down to like 15 plus beneath the ice, we think, or so. And then we went halfway, and somehow we ended up with 3 ft under the ice. So, we're we're hoping this is going to be a good one. We got down to the ice, if you can believe that. So, pretty cool. This lake usually has is very windblown and will have ice spots. But with this here with the heavy snow, there's nothing like that out here. It's all covered towards >> And we don't think this one's going to go all the way through or we do.
>> If it goes through, go through. Yeah.
>> Are you ready?
>> Yeah. Go full throttle.
Oh, she's close.
Oh, that's that's almost got to shovel that. You already threw it.
>> I could tell I hit the water. I just didn't know if I made full contact.
>> I'll tell you what, that's way nicer than the other one, huh?
>> Look at that plug. Look at that plug of ice coming out. It's letting all the pressure off.
>> Whoa.
>> Whoa.
>> Look at that. It's all the way through.
We're going to be swimming out here.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> That sucks. How are we going to do that?
>> Oh my gosh. Look at that. It's like you just pulled the plug.
>> You're going to have like a live well out here apparently.
Go right through.
Crazy.
What's going on?
Sh got the power to go through.
You have to finish off with the other one. That last push is always so hard on the bits.
Yeah. Come on.
>> Okay.
>> It could have something to do with all the water now on it.
>> You sound like low.
>> No, it's not low. Just >> I'm having a hard time spot.
There he is. There's a >> big one. This is a big one.
>> Other side.
>> Okay. I really don't want to go in the hole.
Build the whole house off this thing.
Here we go.
>> Oh gosh. That's insane. Better be fishing this hole. Woo. Okay, this ice is >> Can I guess before?
>> Sure.
>> That is so close to 36 it's not even funny. I'm going to say 36 cuz my mind doesn't know anything better.
>> 35 in.
>> I'm close.
>> 35 in that arug will drill through.
That's That's deep.
>> So that's what a 36 in pipe will look like.
>> Hard to believe that's like 15 feet over there.
That's like 35 ft away.
>> Could you see the bottom >> here?
>> Uhhuh.
>> No, it's dark.
>> I mean, we will once we light it up.
Yeah.
>> It's extremely clear water.
>> Are you going to pull it yet?
>> Yeah.
>> There we go. I'm going in.
>> Honey, do I need to twist it cuz the door's over here?
dark.
It's time to fish. Eric made this super cool rig. We're going to call it, we call it like school of fish. So, it's meant to mimic a few little white fish kind of swimming around down there.
Hopefully, it's got some cool movement.
We have had good luck at this lake before. We have also had slow days. So, we're hoping for a action-packed day out here.
>> Let's tie some string on that sucker and get her in there.
>> Oh, yeah. You get to see the bottom.
>> I'm not excited to see how she performs.
>> This is deep. This is deeper than we usually fish. So, it's going to go like that. Like, >> interesting.
>> Oh, yeah. That looks like a bunch of little fish.
>> I really think you should get that in and then shut her up cuz >> Well, I got to tie it on.
>> Call them the sharks.
>> Yeah. Put up the whole forest.
It's fish juice, man. It's good stuff.
It's a big fish.
>> Did you see it?
>> Yeah, it's a big one.
>> Is she there?
>> No.
>> Bring it up.
Where did she go?
>> She went over underneath you.
>> That look like a hungry female.
>> That's a 30 incher. There she is. There she is. Oh, that's a big one.
>> That's a big fat nice female. She's Give it a little movement. One up.
>> You see her? No, she's down on the bottom.
>> She's getting your bait.
here.
Focus on sir.
>> Do you want a little more?
>> Yeah. Come towards me. Right in the center right there.
>> I didn't really see anything. So, >> it was coming from your side. It was coming from the deep.
Don't move. Keep going. Keep going.
I think you got her.
>> Oh yeah, >> that's a nice one, man.
>> It's a good size.
>> Oh my gosh.
That's a nice one. That's fat.
See, you were able to get it that deep.
It's hard to get it that deep. Okay.
What I'll do is I'll just keep a nice steady jig on this. And >> tangled.
>> What's tangled?
>> This is tangled right here. It went It went right when I threw it. I shouldn't have thrown it.
>> Look at the lure.
>> Yeah. Did you have it?
>> Oh gosh. You have it.
>> I got a fish.
>> I got a little fish.
>> A nice one. It's a nice one.
>> Look at him go.
>> I was like, where'd he go?
>> He bit the lure.
>> He lure and he went off to fight another day.
Did he >> took your bait?
>> He took the bait. Okay, let's get another chunk of bait on there. What do you think? Is that okay?
>> It was a cool fish.
>> Well, we'll do what we need to do. The situation shall arise. That was not the hugest fish in the world. So, >> that was like >> What a cutie.
>> Yeah. I was wondering why he took off so fast. It's good.
>> He just came in all of a sudden.
>> Yeah, but he was coming in slow. He wasn't >> He's back.
>> I'm tangled.
No, >> that's a different one. That's a different one.
>> No, it's the same one.
>> That's bigger. Stupid fish.
>> You mean he took the decoy?
>> What do you mean? Yeah, he was annihilating it.
>> He came out of nowhere.
>> One will come back.
>> Okay. Oh, he's under him.
>> Let me go put him outside.
>> Okay.
>> her her not as big as that one though. Look how big that one is. Like a manor.
that got hooked on me really good in my one hook. It's a really sharp big hook.
>> It went like through his chin and up over and through both his mouths. You got him like underneath. Like he struck it and you hooked him and it went through the bottom and out and then through his top and out. It like closed his mouth.
>> That's weird. I didn't like hook it until he was on it. So that's weird.
>> Got him.
>> You didn't even go for the head shot.
You were like >> go for goal.
>> Nice job. That was one of the fastest pikes I've ever seen.
>> I think I saw a flash the second time.
>> Stacking up bodies.
>> Maybe that scared him when we first put them in and then they didn't chop for a while.
>> There's a potato on the decoy.
>> Oh, it fell off. That's funny.
Did I miss him?
>> Missed it.
>> Right over his head, huh?
>> I freaking saw that. That was a nice one.
>> Went right past his head.
>> That way. Right there.
Get him.
Nice fish. Nice fish. Oh, it's going to get off. It's going to get off.
>> Nice fish. They're >> still down there.
>> Oh, that's a freaking nice fish, honey.
Yay. That's mine.
That could be. That's almost 30 in.
>> That's at least the second biggest one.
It's about the same size.
>> Jeez, hun.
>> I can't see anything out here.
>> Oh, you got another one. You got him on the fishing pole.
>> Gosh dang it. A bit more.
>> Okay, good.
>> Okay, let's get some tangled.
>> That's a big one. Oh, that's a big one.
Does he have yours?
>> He has a marrow.
>> I don't think he's hooked.
No, he didn't get it when I first put it down.
>> He didn't?
>> No, he was starting to talk and stuff.
>> Gotcha.
>> Did a fish just take it?
>> Yeah.
>> A fish took it. Dang it. A fish just took it on that M. Oh, that one. That's the one.
Just give it a sec. Give it a sec.
Well, it >> seemed bigger down there. It's >> pretty big.
Look at the mouth on him, >> man. That one really was a struggle there.
>> That was a little rocket.
>> Is he on there?
>> What he's doing?
He's like swimming up towards me.
>> His way down there.
>> Down he goes.
Tell your big brother.
>> No. No.
Oh, he's right there.
>> He came in for the decoy.
>> You got him.
>> I got him.
>> Nice. You freaking got a fish here.
>> Oh, he's a Thrasher.
>> There he is.
>> Nice job.
>> Another thrasher.
>> That's a big one.
>> He came in for the decoy when you pulled that one up.
>> He came in for the decoy.
>> He came in for the decoy. Hey, we got to call it quits at some point. Catching too many fish out here. I had just gotten back in, so my eyes were still adjusting. Like I couldn't really see very much.
>> Well, when I just got him, he was like he was right under the ice. He was way up in the hole.
Pretty good day so far. I think we've probably seen 10 fish and we have six to take home with us so far. This little jig with the light and a piece of white fish seems to be drawing them in better than the little spear fishing jig we have. I think it's because of the light.
So, let's stick her back down in there.
>> It's doing to get the fish in, though.
>> Oh, yeah. That's it.
>> Where's he at? Where's he at?
>> It saw your face.
It got scared. See where my fishing pole was pointing?
>> Yeah.
>> It was coming in and it saw something of you, maybe like a reflection, and it got scared. Whiplash on. And yes, that was a big one. That was quite bigger than the biggest fish we had.
>> All right, folks. That's a wrap. Can't complain. Although that big guy did get away. He was not having it and we think he was significantly bigger than these ones out here. But he lives on. So, good day out here. Good day of fishing.
There they are. There's the bounty.
Do you want the shovel? I give you the shovel.
Gizzle here.
That's how you got it, I think.
These are bigger ones. So, let me give you the smaller ones for over there.
Don't fall in the hole. Oh, yeah. He ain't going.
Nice.
Nice.
Very nice.
They went all over. Look at them. You might see them.
Last excursion for our winter or spring season, whatever you want to call it. We have a gross amount of gear in here.
It's hard to believe it is for a under 48 hour trip.
Whoa, that is gross.
>> I mean, it's ridiculous.
>> That's what I meant by I mean, we may get a brain freeze if he eats ice cream. He's a >> dude's going in the truck.
>> He's a I don't know if we have Give me I'll give you that one. Yeah, I'll give you two totes and a tank.
Okay. Okay.
>> That's a That's a light load for me.
>> What the Tell you what, I am not wearing gear today on my body.
>> Are you wearing gator or anything?
>> I'm just going to throw a gator on my neck just in case.
Looks like a caribou got either harvested or maybe just eaten by an animal. I guess that's harvested, too. I think it's a caribou. There's a lot of that lighter colored fur. What's the stomach?
Stomach contents. A lot of caribou tracks. Pretty fresh, but no caribou yet.
>> Wow. Oh gosh.
>> Crazy, huh?
>> It's weird how deceptively deep some of the spots are.
>> Oh my gosh. That is so clear. Nothing.
>> The fish are probably hiding probably in the shade or something.
Let's see what we got in here. Should be put in here the order that it goes out.
Going to be pros and cons to where we're camping the next couple nights. It's really nice because it's super flat cuz it's on the ice. But the con is it just snowed and it's got like this powder like dust on top of the ice and it's extremely slick. And we also are trying to figure out ways to tie this down. We usually tie off to like trees and you can dig down sometimes. You need to pull these three corners out. You pull this one out really far cuz the wood stove goes right there and then the side ones you pull out because that's where you put your beds to sleep. So we use the sled on this one and then I don't know.
We'll figure something out for the other two sides.
Barely pull on the side.
>> Yeah, that works like >> that. As long as I keep this wood in here for a while, that'll be good.
>> Oh, I'm tired. I haven't been fed like a gremlin. We're Chia Peter babies.
>> Cutest ones around.
The world's strongest Okay, >> nice. That's going to give us a bunch of room there, huh?
>> Oh, yeah. Way more room this time.
I was going to say you measure the blades, didn't you? That one time.
Didn't you measure the blades dog or something?
>> That's as deep as she'll drill.
>> Yeah, she's maxed out >> and she won't go through.
>> Good thing we have extensions, huh?
What the heck? That's over 38 in.
>> Is it the augur? What's that sound?
>> No, it's like catching it there somehow.
>> Down underneath with the blade.
>> Yeah. Down. Okay. Up.
That's like 5 feet. I'm not joking.
>> I know. I know. I get it. We may only have one fishing hole.
Don't got the power, does she?
Freaking You don't want to do it all the way down. No.
Oh my god.
Didn't go through.
>> So we should just call like 80 fng when we get back and say just That's a wrap.
That's a wrap. Don't fish this leg.
>> Grab the little measuring the little blue round one that rolls out.
>> Oh no. Oh no. It went through.
>> It went through at the last second. Hold it right. Hold it right there if you don't mind.
>> Oh, but Bubba, it went into the blades.
>> Well, that's as far as it can go right there.
>> We dug it.
>> What is it?
>> What do you think it is?
>> Oh my. Tell you what, it's a measurement I don't see often. 48 52.
56.
Don't f with me.
>> 61 in >> is how thick that ice is right there.
>> It's over 5 ft thick.
>> That's insane.
>> 61.
>> That's a back breaker right there.
>> 61 in thick of ice.
>> Call ADFG and tell them that >> secret spot. Say like just a secret unknown. Maybe >> lights.
Let's see how deep we are.
>> You're over 40, huh?
We're going to have to go closer to shore.
>> Why?
>> If you want a bb.
>> There's no bbs in 40 ft.
>> No, there are. I'm sure there are. Do you think you like died and we're just like here right now or something?
>> No, unfortunately.
>> Oh, >> okay. There we go. Oh my god. What are we like 100t of water?
>> We've never been that deep. I'm guessing you're 65 plus. No. Okay, hold on. Uh, keep coming. Keep coming.
Right there.
So that's over 100 ft.
>> We can go half >> like half that way.
>> Yeah. Do half in. Yeah. Put her in the hole. I'm going to walk her in again.
>> That's why it felt weird.
>> We were 80 ft down there and we just caught a fish.
>> It felt it. It's a fish. It's heavy.
That's why it felt weird. That's why it wasn't sinking to the bottom anymore.
What the? Please get this fish.
>> He tugged.
>> What happened?
>> It snapped it.
>> Is it the ice on the whole snap?
>> No, there was no I just climbed it off.
There's like No, that's like all just floating.
>> I just was confused because I didn't know what happened. It didn't make any sense to me.
>> So, this has a mono leader on it. No, that one's not. But yeah, >> you can see why that blinds.
>> I mean, it's not snapping.
I don't think I've ever been that disappointed with a fish. There should be a connection right there. Yeah, I snapped I snapped the leader.
>> Oh, I see water coming up. It went through. Let's pull her out.
Thank you.
>> Right there. That's about 70 ft at least.
>> With the ice or without the ice?
>> No, it's sitting right here.
>> I don't know if there's anything on there.
>> Well, we got, you know, we got to check it anyways.
>> You going to leave it down there?
>> No.
>> Dang, there's a fish down there biting it.
Well, I'll tell you what. He'll buy a new piece of bait. I don't think there's anything on it. Did you feel anything when you grabbed it?
>> He was yanking it in the hole when I was there. I was going to leave it.
>> Oh, I didn't know that. I'm sorry.
Running as fast as I can. I'm dying. I'm running as fast as I can.
Some It's a good That's a Oh my gosh.
That's a good fish.
>> What is that?
>> I don't know. I hope I'm hoping it's a bourbon, but >> it's good for taking your time with it.
That feels heavy.
>> Look at he's pulling that.
>> Oh, that seems heavy.
>> Look at that. That's a fish right there.
That's a good fish.
>> It's still fighting you.
>> He was 70 ft down, so Oh, is that him right there? Oh, something.
>> I think I saw a fish. I don't know. I don't know, honey.
>> Oh, yeah. Oh, yeah. It's a lake trout.
>> That's a really nice fish.
>> Oh, wow. That's a really nice fish.
>> How do I get his head up the hole?
>> Take your time. That's a really nice fish. Nice one, hun.
>> Look at that laker.
>> That's a beauty.
>> Dang, that's a nice laker.
>> Look at his colors.
Woo. See if we can get that hook out of him. Yeah. Unfortunately, I might have to keep this guy.
>> Well, it's a really nice fish, huh? I mean, that's a >> Jeez Louise, man.
>> That's a fat lake trout.
>> That was really hard to get up, Eric.
>> Sorry, guy. Is >> that a male with the colors? The breeding colors?
>> Maybe.
>> Is it the orange?
>> Yeah, the orange.
>> I think it's a male.
>> 28 and a half is my guess.
>> No, he's only 25 and a half.
I thought he was bigger.
Awesome fish. Did not break the record, which is Ariel's record of I think 26 or 26 and a half. That one was 25 and a half, but it was real thick and healthy, so I'm pretty stoked on that fish.
Should be a pretty comfortable night tonight. I'm guessing the lows will get down maybe in like the teens, something like that. But we've got some wood that I've set aside specifically for this stove and using this Arctic oven tent.
So, what I do is I take birch and I split it up a little bit smaller. And then we have these lengths. I think it's like 16 in or something like that where they fit in there just perfectly. And this will burn almost through the night if we have it on low. So I'll get up probably in the middle of the night, throw some more wood on, keep it on low.
Whereas if we were using just spruce, this burns really fast and you literally have to get up like 10 times throughout the night and tend to the fire. Okay, let me throw another piece on there.
I got to bring my gear in.
I don't think I'll ever be one of those people that drinks it black. I mean, it's like it's we live too rough to like just drink our >> I know >> our coffee in an unpleasant way.
Oh, seven eggs in there for some reason.
>> Why? Why? There were seven eggs. I cracked seven. That's not that bad.
>> I didn't even think we could eat seven eggs by themselves, let alone with a pound of meat and a jar of potatoes.
>> Oh, I'm sorry. I thought we were making Nothing.
>> Don't feel anything on this one.
>> Okay.
>> It got like kind of tangled, but not bad, actually.
>> Yeah. Nothing on there, I don't think.
>> That's crazy.
>> I know.
Looks like we may be eating lake trout for dinner. We were hoping for a bb. Uh we set that those lines last night and there was actually a bite, pretty strong bite on one of them when we put it down there. Pulled it back up, checked the bait, still on there. So, we just put it back. I think we're going to try jigging them for just a little bit. These are significantly shallower holes. Only like six to 10 ft under the ice.
>> But I did hear what sounded like cranes, but it's not cranes. They can't be here this early.
>> It's time again. I don't know, whatever.
Up in pterodactyl.
>> Doesn't look like we're gonna get anything out of this hole, so we are going to go back to the ones we have over by the tent. They were pretty productive yesterday. See if we can hook us a lake trout. It's been a pretty good snow machine season this year. We didn't do as much riding. We've been known to do like 1,000 miles in a season. This year, we've probably only done a couple hundred. I'm going to blame that on the cold. The beginning part of the season, we had a lot of 50 below temperature, and we didn't get out too much. And we did have to do a lot of repairs and maintenance on the snow machines.
Recently on both machines, I had to change out the fuel socks and the inline fuel filters. The inline fuel filter is super easy to change. Just a screwdriver. It pops right out. But the fuel socks, you have to remove like everything. You have to take the whole fuel tank off and then you have to remove the fuel pump and they're inside there. This one was having a problem. It was clogged. It was all dirty. I don't know what gets on there, but they get like gray and sediment on them. So, we ended up just changing it on both machines. So, I didn't have a problem with mine. And then also on this one, the starter Bendix, it's the little gear that moves over when you turn the key to crank the flywheel, which turns on the motor. It was sticking. It did that when we were on a few trips. Our trick to get it going out there was we would lean the machine on the side and the little starter Bendix would kind of fall into place, and we were able to start it. I took it apart, lubed it up. Seems to be working. Let's head back to camp.
>> Look at that one.
>> That's the one I'm going to use over there.
>> Lake trout really likes stuff like that.
>> He's missing a couple legs. Oh, fun. But other than that, he's going to get a piece of bait.
Told you it's a good thing we put the lake trout away.
>> It's a bald eagle.
>> He's definitely checking us out, huh?
>> Oh, yeah.
>> After taking a trip pretty early winter season, Eric and I did decide to kind of upgrade some of our camping equipment this year. Had the Arctic tent for several years. Arctic oven tent. We got a lot of questions about that. It's a special tent designed by Alaska Gear Co., locally made here in Alaska, and it has a wood stove in it. So that is why we are able to be out here. I've said that before. I mean, I think we're semi hardcore.
>> You're not hardcore.
>> But we're not hardcore enough to sleep out here without heat. So it does make it so we can take a lot of adventures.
It's definitely made pretty high quality. We've actually been able to take it out a lot more this year. It seems like I know in the past we've taken out with the dogs and it's it's a little bit challenging with space and making sure they were comfortable in there. Few years back Eric got us some couch cotss. Disco beds I think is the name. Something like that. or maybe disc bed. And those have been living in the van for about a year. We really liked them in there. But the CS that we had for in in our tent, even though he had originally gotten those for it, um they were really hard, like old military cotss for Eric to put together. Every time he like would hurt himself, so he's like, "Heck with those. I'm putting the the other beds in there." And that's been working out really cool cuz now we don't have to have a C on each side, you know? It can just be on one side. Gives us more space. And that is what they were originally intended for. They do take a little while to set up. I guess that's probably a downside and it doesn't make the most comfortable couch, but we figured out ways to make it more comfortable with padding. The only thing that we actually did get new this season was some inflatable mats. We don't usually have inflatable mats. Sometimes we'll just sleep directly on the plywood or the CS and that's been working for a long time for us, but I don't know, maybe we're just kind of old now and we decided that we wanted to get some like little thin inflatable mats that you could puff out and make it a little cozier. But I don't imagine we'll bring those on every trip because I feel like they're kind of delicate. The thing that I'm most excited that we got was our wiggy sleeping bags. So I call them wiggly sometimes. They are I forget where they are made right now. Sorry about that. I was looking up recommendations and that name came up quite a bit. And when we were looking at them, they were actually on sale. So I'm very thrilled with the price we paid for two sets. So, we got like a lighter weight one for some sheep hunting and then we also got the really intense thick one. It's like rated for negative60. And I'm going to be honest, I would not try to sleep outside in it 60, but maybe zero. They are the hottest, warmest, coziest, nicest sleeping bags I have ever my skin has ever touched. We were using uh some sleeping bags that we had from our remote cabin, quite possibly like a few decades old. So, definitely an upgrade there. We've had them in the truck with the heater on, the diesel heater. I think that the coldest we've ever slept was 20 something. Have we ever slept with the Wiggies with no heat? I can't remember. I can't really remember right now if we've slept somewhere this winter without heat in addition to the sleeping bags. But they would be awesome for like fall season hunting, you know, when it gets cold. But if you don't want to bring like all the gear to have a fire, you know, have a wood stove tent. So comfortable. Every time I sleep in them, they're a little stiff, so you can't like fold it if you get too hot. That's I guess a tiny drawback, but beyond that, they're amazing. They came with these little socks, these little sleeping socks, and Eric convinced me to try and wear them last night. They were so comfortable. I don't know what the actual sleeping bag material is, but it's it's like silk or something. It's amazing. So, needless to say, this year it's been a little more comfortable when we've headed out, even though we haven't gone out too much. I know when we went out the early winter, uh I was like so miserable. Eric got up a thousand times to tend to that fire and I was like shivering in my sleeping bag. So, we just decided if we want to come out a little more, it's probably a better idea to invest in a little bit of gear. And on a separate note, but something we also get asked a lot is about our remote lake cabin, which we no longer have. And I know that may be saddening to some of you out there. Uh it's not too saddening to us. We were definitely way too far away from it now at this point in our lives. The desire to go out there just wasn't very strong. It's we sold it uh over the summer, so it now has a new owner and I'm sure they're going to take great care of it, which is awesome because that place definitely could use some love. I am still going to the bottom of this hole. Can you believe that? Like I haven't even gotten to the bottom yet. There will be no more trips out there since we don't possess it anymore. And I think we like to go on like too many new adventures and there's so much in Alaska to do and these places to go that we've never been before that it's it's just too exciting and overwhelming for us to go to the same place over and over again. It was very un realistic that we were going to be doing like repairs and work on it and stuff like that. So here we are ice fishing on a lake with 5t of ice. Oh, nice. You're laying down. Nice. I like it. Corn dogs for lunch. I mean, seriously.
>> Oh, definitely not a burp.
>> Give him some slugs.
>> Unless he got off. He's swimming towards me.
>> Why is he coming towards you?
>> Did he get off?
>> You look like your bull's bending too much to have gotten off.
>> I think he got off. Yeah, he got off.
I'm setting him. I don't sit here and mess around. See how I got slack in the line? He's eating it.
>> It's eating it.
>> Got him on there. That was a good hook set. So, >> just got to go 65 ft up now.
Oh, it's a nice dark one.
>> Super dark, huh?
>> Oh, it's a beauty. So, I think it's a male.
>> He's >> beauty. Gorgeous fish.
Beautiful fish.
>> So, that's a little sucker that was playing.
>> Beautiful lake trout. Way down at the bottom. 60 to 70 ft down. Look how dark he is.
>> That's pretty.
>> Okay, I'm going put him back in.
>> He's a thrasher. He's gone.
>> You got him all the way up, honey. Good job.
>> Heck yeah.
really lose your feeling so deep down, you know.
I don't think he's on.
Oh, holy. Okay. Never setting my hook that hard again. Are you kidding me?
>> Setting this. People always say I don't set my line. I am setting it. I freaking snap.
>> You completely snapped it.
>> Watch that. That was so funny.
>> Is there any on there or not?
>> Yeah, he's a fish on there.
>> Eric.
>> Yeah, >> he's coming. Need your help.
>> Pull him up. Oh man, >> it's a fat fat one.
>> It's a fat.
>> What the heck? Is it pregnant?
>> What is in its stomach?
>> I think it just ate.
>> How is the belly so big on that thing?
>> I think it ate something.
I think it ate something.
>> Yeah. What did you eat, little guy?
That guy is plump.
>> This fish ate something. I feel its belly.
>> Look at how big its belly is.
>> It ate something. There's There's something large in its belly. Going to go enjoy his lunch. Let's get him out of this line there. Sorry, little guy. We don't want you getting all twisted up in that.
>> There it is.
>> That fish ate something. He like There was actually like like a bulge in his stomach.
>> Ate like another fish. Huh? You see its back was even like >> that was a beauty. Good fish.
>> He ate He just ate another fish.
>> Switched over to this little guy.
>> That's a nice jig.
>> I think a little smaller.
>> That's Yeah, less they have to eat. Less of a mouthful.
>> That's the one that broke last time we were fishing, but I fixed it. So, we're due for two new poles next season. Maybe some nice home cooking out here.
>> Hey, the sauces are homemade.
>> Double Duncan >> mustard and BBQ. They're my own sauces, man.
See it really yanking? Oh, it's really fighting hard. Doesn't feel heavy, but it's fighting hard, >> honey.
>> Oh, wow.
>> That's a FREAKING NICE ONE.
>> LOOK AT THE COLORS ON THAT.
>> What a beauty.
>> Holy cow.
>> I barely caught it.
>> No wonder it fought pretty hard, huh?
>> Dang, that's a nice one.
>> Okay, I like that smaller lure. Yeah, he was just right on the side, I think.
>> No, that's a nice fish.
>> They didn't give me a lot of time to let him down. He was really, really fighting hard like the one you had.
>> Okay, I'll be back with a fish.
>> Okay, good job, honey.
>> Good job.
>> I'm saying I'm sure you'll catch one.
>> Look how jerky this guy is.
I need to breathe.
Oh my.
Oh.
>> Oh.
>> Oo. Feisty. You got a fight or >> Oh, is this one big or what?
>> It's just mean.
>> Okay. Nice. It could be small and mean.
>> No, I'm just saying they're mean when they're like that. They're fighting.
>> Oh, yeah. There he is. There he is. Oh, that's a nice size.
That's a big one, Eric.
>> Whoa, that's a fat lake trout.
>> Are you kidding? Oh my gosh.
>> Oh my god, he's so fat.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> Oh, that's a fat one. That is what I'm talking about. Are you serious?
>> Look at his body.
>> Look how heavy duty that thing is. I cannot How was it hooked? Just curious.
>> It's down in there, but he's not the best hook, >> babe. That is >> That's a big one.
>> That is a monster.
Oh my gosh. I mean, I would keep that one if you want. It's beautiful.
That's uh I don't know if it's significantly longer, but it's significantly fatter than anything you ever caught. That's bigger than That's like a silver salad.
>> Jeez, I can't get that. Look out.
Sorry, little guy.
>> You know, he wasn't out there very long.
I don't know why he couldn't get back down.
>> I don't know if it's his air sack.
>> Seemed like his bladder's like floating.
>> Like he was floating a little too much, but unfortunately, we're going to keep that guy. So, but he's so fat.
It's 27, hun.
>> You beat our record.
>> You beat our record. That's a little over 27.
>> Can you measure that girth? Well, >> right there is 16 in.
>> That's really That's amazing.
>> He's very girthy.
I'm going to watch mine because chances are I'm going to get a bite, too.
>> It's jerking it hard. What do I do in the circumstance?
>> You got them? Yeah.
>> I don't know. They get off sometimes.
>> Is that a big one?
>> I don't know if it's a fighter. I'm not saying it's a big Oh, yeah. Your arm does hurt after a while. Oh, the mosquito landed in the water. I got to let him. I got >> You got to let him. You got to let him.
>> I mean, he feels like a beaver. He's so far down there still. You barely have any line on your pole.
>> Okay. It's not bigger.
>> Yeah, it is.
>> That's a beauty. Look at how like silvery it is.
>> Yeah, it's a silver one.
>> That is a nice fish. I say since we don't want him, let's see if he's not hooked too bad and see if you can give him water right now. Real quick.
>> 28. You beat it. Good job, honey.
>> He's so silvery.
That >> is a massive lake trout. Massive. Look at that.
Massive. Good catch, hun. A male.
Let's see if he goes back down.
>> He left.
>> He's a healthy one. Beat the record.
>> That's really stressful on your arm and everything. Like my arm sh my arm shaking >> like just from keeping it stiff as a biscuit.
>> 28 in.
>> He was really cool colored silver.
>> This is like a baby.
>> It's a verb. Maybe.
>> Sometimes they don't fight very hard.
It's >> right there.
>> Sometimes they don't fight very hard.
>> What is it?
>> It's got to be a lake trout.
>> That's not a baby.
>> Yeah, >> it's a big fish.
>> It's a big one.
>> It's just didn't bite. You just caught my fish.
>> That's the same fish.
>> You caught my fish.
>> That's the same fish.
>> That is absolutely the same fish because it's silver. He's remarkable.
>> He's trying to eat Eric. Can you hold him up so we can see how big he is?
>> So, we both caught the record, huh?
>> That poor guy is probably tired.
>> He's probably really tired. That's why he didn't feel very big cuz >> Did he at least get the bait?
>> No, the bait's sitting there. An extremist, that guy.
>> I don't know about that.
>> I knew it was the same fish immediately when he pulled it up cuz it was huge and it was silver.
>> If it didn't fight at all, he must have just been done.
Oh, you got him.
It's 80 ft down.
>> Breathe, honey. Breathe.
Oh, it's off. Drop it right. Drop it.
Drop it. Drop it back down.
>> That was a nice fish.
>> Is it yellow?
Yellowish hint to it.
>> I don't think there's anything in the stomach.
>> Empty stomach. It's big air sack.
She's just eating like little >> like bugs, leeches, little like shrimp or something like little little animals.
Dunk her in.
Oh gosh, there's a mistake there.
some hot butter. Well, we called it quits a little early tonight. It looks like maybe there's like a storm kind of coming in. We're going to try some of this lake trout. So, lake trout is not our favorite meat, hence why we tried to get the fish back in the water. But, this is boiled and Sprite and sauteed in butter. I guess we have hot butter on it.
It's definitely the firmst that I've ever had it. I think that's one of the reasons why Eric and I aren't fond of it is it does take on I don't know. It just doesn't have like a super firm texture.
And even cooked like this, it's so soft so it's okay. It's not It's not the best in the world. It actually slightly tastes like seafood, which is interesting.
>> I noticed it was a little fishy, >> which is weird cuz these guys are in these deep mountain lakes. You know what I mean?
>> Yeah.
>> I mean, to be honest, it's not bad. It's not bad. It's just not my favorite. You >> also cooked it in sugar.
It's a good thing we were fishing tonight.
>> It'd be pretty hard to tell which way you were going if you went that way, huh?
>> It would actually be on the lake right now.
>> Storming.
>> So, it's the next morning. And this is all like squishy.
It's like a water bed.
>> Is that under the tent?
>> Yeah, it's under the tent. Look.
>> Gotcha.
>> It's from being so hot.
>> Oh, we got a water >> water bed.
Okay, those three go together.
These three go together.
Thanks for coming along on this trip with us. We are headed back. The snow machine season is over. They're going to get stored away and is almost time for the grand reveal under this thing that I can't remember the name for. So, it's going to look pretty cool under there, I bet.
WHOA.
IT'S REALLY SKETCHY WHERE THE wood stove.
Check that out.
>> There's the ice. Oh, that's scary looking.
>> That is scary looking. That's five freaking >> That's 5 ft thick of ice.
>> Look at this water.
>> Oh, that's where the wood stove was.
>> Wa. That's so >> major message.
>> The cracks only go like six six inches.
>> That's really scary.
>> Look at the cracks. You could freaking >> look how slippery it is.
5T, honey. Five feet.
