[00:02:22]Folks, things are not shaping up good today. I don't really know what's going on here. We seem to be having kind of a bad luck streak. We wanted to go out fishing, pike fishing at a cool new lake this year and we tried that probably like two weeks ago and just got like completely wasted a few miles in and overflow. We actually like snapped our comealong and considered walking out.

[00:02:41]But we did get out. We went back to go ice fishing at a different lake that we've been to before. Went to set up our spear fishing tent and everything and the augur, the actual pull cord snapped.

[00:02:51]And Eric tried everything he could to get it rerung and get it going. Almost went, but it didn't go and it just kind of completely like broke into smitherines. So, we packed up and went home. And now we are hundreds of miles out here trying to go to a hot springs.

[00:03:06]It's bitterly cold. And for some reason, the machines won't start, which makes absolutely no sense. We're trying to just let them warm up in the sun and see what's going to happen because if we can't get them started, we obviously can't go on the trip. So, we have to head home. I think it's colder than saying it's colder because like the gas caps are usually like rubber and soft.

[00:05:06]>> Folks, it's been a long time coming, but I finally got myself a fox. It's going to go on a hat made out of this and some of a our beaver pelts that Arrol got ready for us. I've probably tried to shoot a lot of foxes. I'm pretty sure all of them were on our property cuz they come and kill our chickens all the time. Today, we're not on our property.

[00:05:22]We're out on a different adventure and we happened to see this guy from really far away. It was hunting a big flock of Tarmagan and then we came in and we hunted him. And it's also the last day of fox season, so it ends at midnight tonight. Pretty stoked.

[00:06:40]Clack All right, if you can believe it or not, Eric caught a second fox. Uh, I don't know what kind it is. He was the only one that saw it and then he kind of just took off. So, we will see when he gets here.

[00:07:42]>> I saw something that looked kind of just like a little color sitting there and I was like that kind of looked like a fox maybe like that laid down cuz it heard us coming and then as soon as I went up there he was like down the hill and he was freaking gone taking off. I got to a good spot and he was he was literally running as I shot him. He was getting further and further away. I was like if I don't shoot now I'm not going to get him. And I just I literally led right in front of him and I shot. He was sprinting and he just nose dive and died.

[00:11:26]Our adventures continue. My snow machine started up this morning and we are headed out to a glacier. This area we're hanging out is a heavily traffic spot in the summer, but the road or the highway is not plowed in the winter, so it pretty much closes down. The lodge owners do groom it. A lot of folks do travel these parts via snow machine and it is my type of riding. Super fast, super smooth. It's like the easiest riding ever. So, we're going to see what kind of shenanigans we get into today and head off. Get going.

[00:18:51]650 miles later, we are back. We are loaded and strapped down. The trail is just a short jaw away. We're definitely hoping to get to the hot springs today.

[00:19:00]That was the first time Eric and I have ever had bad fuel like that. So bad that it shut us down completely. So, we were a little bit dumbfounded. Um the machines obviously wouldn't start at all. Eric had to go back and do a whole bunch of stuff and take all the gas out of them. His machine only got two gallons from the gas station that was the culprit. Mine got like half a tank.

[00:19:21]So, needless to say, it was a total headache, but it's absolutely beautiful today. Much better weather than we could have hoped for. And we're going to head out and hopefully make it there.

[00:21:27]Well, it is a miracle that we actually got out here. A little bit of a rustic hot springs. Eric is making himself a sandwich. He was taking a nap.

[00:21:37]Unfortunately, he doesn't feel very good. He got the flu a few days ago and we still opted to come out here, but the trail not so good. I got to be honest, we're really weak coming through winter.

[00:21:49]We were weak going into winter. I feel like the best representation of what I feel like is an injured animal. So, not good at all. Usually, a lot of our trips happen mid- winter. So, you know, November, December, January in the the depths of winter, right? But the most popular season is for sure February, March, and April. And I can definitely see why, you know, you got light on your side, you got warmth on your side. It's a nice temperature in here. I could take it a little bit warmer. At least we didn't make it out that day that it was like negative30. is I imagine that these natural hot springs, they do kind of fluctuate when it is a lot colder like that. And you know, right now I'm guessing I'm guessing it's maybe like under 100° or so.

[00:29:51]Round two. We're out here trying to do some pike fishing. We've got old trusty up and running again. We originally thought we were going to go ice fishing like right after this broke down and we had to order this whole new pull start assembly for it and it was going to take a while to get here. So, we ended up buying another augur. They didn't have uh the gas ones in stock. Since it's kind of the end of ice fishing season, they're switching over. All they had was the Eskimo 10-in battery powered augur, the composite one, which we've never used. We're kind of excited to try it out. We'll see how it does out here today. There's pros and cons to gas and battery. Obviously, this one is a very uh trustworthy augur to us. We've literally drilled hundreds of holes and just beat on this thing. and you just put gas in it and it doesn't matter if it's, you know, 20, 30, 40 below, it'll start up and you can drill your holes.

[00:30:35]The battery powered augers, like I said, not much experience with them, but if it's like any other battery that we own, you do have to keep them warm and the cold will affect them. This gas powered augur, it weighs in a little over 35 lbs. And the battery powered composite augur, it only weighs 15 lbs. So, we're going to get this hole drilled because we need our extension and we only have an extension for this augur. There's actually about eight inches of snow on top of this ice. We're not sure how thick the ice is, but it's it's really thick. And then we'll get the electric one out and we'll see how that one does.

And then we went halfway, and somehow we ended up with 3 ft under the ice. So, we're we're hoping this is going to be a good one. We got down to the ice, if you can believe that. So, pretty cool. This lake usually has is very windblown and will have ice spots. But with this here with the heavy snow, there's nothing like that out here. It's all covered towards >> And we don't think this one's going to go all the way through or we do.

[00:57:53]Should be a pretty comfortable night tonight. I'm guessing the lows will get down maybe in like the teens, something like that. But we've got some wood that I've set aside specifically for this stove and using this Arctic oven tent.

[00:58:05]So, what I do is I take birch and I split it up a little bit smaller. And then we have these lengths. I think it's like 16 in or something like that where they fit in there just perfectly. And this will burn almost through the night if we have it on low. So I'll get up probably in the middle of the night, throw some more wood on, keep it on low.

[00:58:20]Whereas if we were using just spruce, this burns really fast and you literally have to get up like 10 times throughout the night and tend to the fire. Okay, let me throw another piece on there.

Uh we set that those lines last night and there was actually a bite, pretty strong bite on one of them when we put it down there. Pulled it back up, checked the bait, still on there. So, we just put it back. I think we're going to try jigging them for just a little bit. These are significantly shallower holes. Only like six to 10 ft under the ice.

[01:01:03]>> Doesn't look like we're gonna get anything out of this hole, so we are going to go back to the ones we have over by the tent. They were pretty productive yesterday. See if we can hook us a lake trout. It's been a pretty good snow machine season this year. We didn't do as much riding. We've been known to do like 1,000 miles in a season. This year, we've probably only done a couple hundred. I'm going to blame that on the cold. The beginning part of the season, we had a lot of 50 below temperature, and we didn't get out too much. And we did have to do a lot of repairs and maintenance on the snow machines.

[01:01:28]Recently on both machines, I had to change out the fuel socks and the inline fuel filters. The inline fuel filter is super easy to change. Just a screwdriver. It pops right out. But the fuel socks, you have to remove like everything. You have to take the whole fuel tank off and then you have to remove the fuel pump and they're inside there. This one was having a problem. It was clogged. It was all dirty. I don't know what gets on there, but they get like gray and sediment on them. So, we ended up just changing it on both machines. So, I didn't have a problem with mine. And then also on this one, the starter Bendix, it's the little gear that moves over when you turn the key to crank the flywheel, which turns on the motor. It was sticking. It did that when we were on a few trips. Our trick to get it going out there was we would lean the machine on the side and the little starter Bendix would kind of fall into place, and we were able to start it. I took it apart, lubed it up. Seems to be working. Let's head back to camp.

[01:02:36]>> After taking a trip pretty early winter season, Eric and I did decide to kind of upgrade some of our camping equipment this year. Had the Arctic tent for several years. Arctic oven tent. We got a lot of questions about that. It's a special tent designed by Alaska Gear Co., locally made here in Alaska, and it has a wood stove in it. So that is why we are able to be out here. I've said that before. I mean, I think we're semi hardcore.

[01:02:59]>> But we're not hardcore enough to sleep out here without heat. So it does make it so we can take a lot of adventures.

[01:03:05]It's definitely made pretty high quality. We've actually been able to take it out a lot more this year. It seems like I know in the past we've taken out with the dogs and it's it's a little bit challenging with space and making sure they were comfortable in there. Few years back Eric got us some couch cotss. Disco beds I think is the name. Something like that. or maybe disc bed. And those have been living in the van for about a year. We really liked them in there. But the CS that we had for in in our tent, even though he had originally gotten those for it, um they were really hard, like old military cotss for Eric to put together. Every time he like would hurt himself, so he's like, "Heck with those. I'm putting the the other beds in there." And that's been working out really cool cuz now we don't have to have a C on each side, you know? It can just be on one side. Gives us more space. And that is what they were originally intended for. They do take a little while to set up. I guess that's probably a downside and it doesn't make the most comfortable couch, but we figured out ways to make it more comfortable with padding. The only thing that we actually did get new this season was some inflatable mats. We don't usually have inflatable mats. Sometimes we'll just sleep directly on the plywood or the CS and that's been working for a long time for us, but I don't know, maybe we're just kind of old now and we decided that we wanted to get some like little thin inflatable mats that you could puff out and make it a little cozier. But I don't imagine we'll bring those on every trip because I feel like they're kind of delicate. The thing that I'm most excited that we got was our wiggy sleeping bags. So I call them wiggly sometimes. They are I forget where they are made right now. Sorry about that. I was looking up recommendations and that name came up quite a bit. And when we were looking at them, they were actually on sale. So I'm very thrilled with the price we paid for two sets. So, we got like a lighter weight one for some sheep hunting and then we also got the really intense thick one. It's like rated for negative60. And I'm going to be honest, I would not try to sleep outside in it 60, but maybe zero. They are the hottest, warmest, coziest, nicest sleeping bags I have ever my skin has ever touched. We were using uh some sleeping bags that we had from our remote cabin, quite possibly like a few decades old. So, definitely an upgrade there. We've had them in the truck with the heater on, the diesel heater. I think that the coldest we've ever slept was 20 something. Have we ever slept with the Wiggies with no heat? I can't remember. I can't really remember right now if we've slept somewhere this winter without heat in addition to the sleeping bags. But they would be awesome for like fall season hunting, you know, when it gets cold. But if you don't want to bring like all the gear to have a fire, you know, have a wood stove tent. So comfortable. Every time I sleep in them, they're a little stiff, so you can't like fold it if you get too hot. That's I guess a tiny drawback, but beyond that, they're amazing. They came with these little socks, these little sleeping socks, and Eric convinced me to try and wear them last night. They were so comfortable. I don't know what the actual sleeping bag material is, but it's it's like silk or something. It's amazing. So, needless to say, this year it's been a little more comfortable when we've headed out, even though we haven't gone out too much. I know when we went out the early winter, uh I was like so miserable. Eric got up a thousand times to tend to that fire and I was like shivering in my sleeping bag. So, we just decided if we want to come out a little more, it's probably a better idea to invest in a little bit of gear. And on a separate note, but something we also get asked a lot is about our remote lake cabin, which we no longer have. And I know that may be saddening to some of you out there. Uh it's not too saddening to us. We were definitely way too far away from it now at this point in our lives. The desire to go out there just wasn't very strong. It's we sold it uh over the summer, so it now has a new owner and I'm sure they're going to take great care of it, which is awesome because that place definitely could use some love. I am still going to the bottom of this hole. Can you believe that? Like I haven't even gotten to the bottom yet. There will be no more trips out there since we don't possess it anymore. And I think we like to go on like too many new adventures and there's so much in Alaska to do and these places to go that we've never been before that it's it's just too exciting and overwhelming for us to go to the same place over and over again. It was very un realistic that we were going to be doing like repairs and work on it and stuff like that. So here we are ice fishing on a lake with 5t of ice. Oh, nice. You're laying down. Nice. So, lake trout is not our favorite meat, hence why we tried to get the fish back in the water. But, this is boiled and Sprite and sauteed in butter. I guess we have hot butter on it.

[01:17:16]It's definitely the firmst that I've ever had it. I think that's one of the reasons why Eric and I aren't fond of it is it does take on I don't know. It just doesn't have like a super firm texture.

[01:17:24]And even cooked like this, it's so soft so it's okay. It's not It's not the best in the world. It actually slightly tastes like seafood, which is interesting.
