The Robin Hood Commando — Anders Lassen VC

Anders Lassen (1922-1945) was a Danish-born commando who served with the British Special Boat Service during World War II, becoming the only non-Commonwealth soldier awarded the Victoria Cross. Born into an aristocratic family near Vordingborg, Denmark, he initially worked as a merchant sailor before joining the SOE and later the SBS. Known for his bravery, leadership, and distinctive nickname 'The Robin Hood Commando' due to his love of archery, Lassen conducted daring raids across the Mediterranean, including Operation Postmaster in Africa and multiple operations in Greece. He was promoted to Major by age 25 and received three Military Crosses for his exceptional service. Lassen was mortally wounded during a raid near Lake Comacchio, Italy, on April 8-9, 1945, and is buried at the Argenta Gap War Cemetery. His legacy of courage and self-sacrifice continues to inspire, with statues commemorating him in Copenhagen, Herefordshire, and his birthplace.
