In 1911, two expeditions raised to be the first to reach the South Pole. Norwegian rolled Ammonson planned meticulously used dog sleds and skis and reached the pole on December 14th. British captain Robert Scott arrived 33 days later to find Ammonson's flag already there. Scott's return journey descended into catastrophe, frostbite, exhaustion, and a brutal blizzard.
