The marine layer, also known as 'May gray,' is a cool, moist air mass that forms over the ocean and moves inland, creating overcast conditions and fog that significantly lowers temperatures along coastlines. This weather pattern typically brings cooler morning temperatures (upper 60s°F) to coastal areas while inland regions remain warmer (70s-80s°F). When the marine layer returns, it can cause temperature drops of over 10°F in some areas. The marine layer's influence diminishes inland, meaning interior regions like the Antelope Valley may not experience the cooling effect until the next day, creating temperature differentials between coastal and inland areas. Wind advisories are often issued for interior regions during these patterns due to strong onshore winds (25-50 mph gusts) that can create elevated fire danger despite warm temperatures.

bit of elevated fire danger for some of these interior spots like the mountains and deserts. Now, there are no red flag warnings or anything in place, but we do have some windy weather and still some warm temperatures there. So, just a heads up. Now, we're looking live into downtown LA. Way different view than what we have been seeing. So, that marine layer, that May gray is now back for a lot of us. I know we've been hanging on to it for the coastline. So, you're waking up to some overcast conditions and maybe a little bit of fog outside, too. Some areas it's a little more patchy and lower visibilities than others. We don't have dense fog advisories in place. So hopefully it won't affect your commute too much. A little bit dense here over into some of the San Frernando Valley over into Burbank and then as you head out toward the upland area. Then we're going to head into this afternoon and our temperatures are going to be pretty nice. It's still going to be warm once we see some sunshine, but some beaches may stay on the cloudy side. So we do have a little bit more May gray today which will bring us much cooler temperatures. Still a nice afternoon though and nice afternoons ahead even with this cool down. But we will have some winds picking up for the mountains and deserts. So, we have wind advisories in place out that way, which I'll show you in just a bit. And then we're going to head into a little bit of a warmer weekend, but all of our temperatures stay kind of just within a couple degrees of each other now for most of us the next few days. Now, the coastline's going to be staying on the much cooler side thanks to the deeper marine layer the next few days. Just dipping down to some upper 60s. We're going to see a little bump up by this weekend by Friday. And then by this weekend, Saturday, especially Sunday, we do get back to a little cooler. So coastline going to be into some mid60s h but we are still looking at some warm temperatures inland which I'll talk about in just a bit. All right, John, Rachel, Tony, back to you returning for a lot of us. So we are back to an overcast start. It was really nice to have the sunshine for the mornings for many of us while it lasted and now we are back to this pattern.
>> So this is what we're looking at as we look live over to the Burbank area. So it is going to be a cloudy cool start into Van Eis about 57 degrees and then we take you out toward the airport and of course we're seeing overcast conditions here too. It is about 58° over at LAX. So, what else we're going to see today? Aside from cooler temperatures and more clouds, some winds will be getting a bit stronger. Now, today we are switching it to a pretty nice strong onshore push. That's a strong seab breeze coming in from the coastline. So, these are going to be winds coming in from the south, the southwest. And they're really going to gust for these interior sections. So, not just the deserts, but also the mountains. We're talking winds about 25 35 miles per hour. gust up to 50 in some isolated locations. This is especially for the Analopee Valley, whereas a lot of us are just going to see a breeze a little later on. It is going to get pretty windy in some of these interior spots. So, just a heads up that that's going to be one of the differences that we're going to notice today, but our temperatures aren't changing too much yet for the deserts and mountains and that's why we do have some elevated fire danger. We don't have red flag warnings or anything in place, but just know we could see the ability for some fast spreading grass fires as we get into this afternoon because we're still going to see some pretty warm temperatures out there because we're not getting this influence of the May gray and this nice marine layer that's going to cool a lot of us down. So today, a lot of us noticing differences and temperature- wise, you won't be seeing it much for the interior yet. So we have a lot of 50s out this morning, cloud coverage all the way out even to the Inland Empire.
So, it is a cool start and then this afternoon we're going to see temperatures really just nice for a while now. Los Angeles and Orange County, a lot of 70s. It will get warm but not too warm and temperatures look like they're getting even warmer for the start of next week. So, we'll get back up to about 80° by next Monday potentially. The valleys and Inland Empire, low 80s today. We'll get even cooler tomorrow. And then we start to warm it up slightly through the end of this week and then not too many changes.
We're talking about temperature fluctuations really just about a degree or so each day almost for the next week until next Monday. That's we're going to see get a little warmer. We still have high pressure out there, but it's moving east. Now, this low pressure that's going to be well north of us, that's what's going to help start some of these changes. So, I'm going to show you what the wind's going to look like too this afternoon and your mountains and deserts forecast coming up here.
>> As we get into this afternoon, we're going to get a little breeze pick up this afternoon and then we're going to start to see gusty conditions for the mountains and deserts by a little later on. 58 degrees for the Glendale area right now. And so temperatures are really going to get a nice nice dip today. So we have May Gray that's back.
Much cooler weather. I mean, we're talking more than about a 10°ree drop for some areas. So we were in the 90s yesterday. We're going to see a lot more 80s today. So it's still going to be warm today, not as warm. Most days this week, we won't see too much of temperature differences. So we can expect mostly cloudy starts, cool starts, and then some nice warm afternoons, but not too warm. Then we're going to get into this weekend. It's going to be a little warmer. And then by next week, we do have even warmer temperatures by next Monday, but nothing as hot as how as how hot it's been in the past couple days. So, that's going to be the good news. Now, the mountains are not cooling off yet today. So, these far interior spots are not seeing many changes quite yet until tomorrow. We're not getting that marine influence there, but by tomorrow, we're going to have the influence of low pressure that's way north of us. That's going to help us dip down to more mild temperatures for the mountains in the afternoons. And then we're just going to stay pretty mild for the foreseeable future for those higher elevations. Now, where we're going to see some of the stronger winds today will be for the Analopee Valley. We do have a wind advisory in place there. We could see gusts up to about 50 mph in some areas. So, it might get a little dusty out too. And it's going to be very warm. So, just expect this afternoon to be warm, to be windy. That's also going to push us into a little bit of elevated fire danger too for some of these interior spots because we're not cooling off there yet. So, we'll have the potential for some fast growing grass fires by the time we get into this afternoon, but we don't have red flag warnings or anything in place. By tomorrow, we'll finally start to see more comfortable temperatures for the desert communities. All right, that May Gray also has Scott right something we just said. Come on.
>> Let me check this.
>> 6:49 in the morning.
>> Um, John and I, you know, my hometown, John, you know, >> so you and I will definitely be checking this out. Cable 50.
>> That's why I'm asking. Okay.
>> Table 50.
>> I will be there. Uh, we're talking about much cooler temperatures today. So, I hope you notice that difference as you step outside. You're going to notice it as so. We've been really seeing that May gray along the coast. We've not been seeing it inland for a little while. And now this morning, we are waking up to some cloudy skies for a lot of us. Most of this fog shouldn't really affect your commute too much. However, there might be some patchy lowerlying areas. We don't have dense fog advisories in place though. But you'll notice up toward Oxnard, we have some lower visibilities and some patchy fog out toward Burbank.
And then as you head way out east and we get up into the upland area, it looks like we have maybe close to about a half a mile visibility. So just a heads up if you are stepping outside this morning and you're driving along in some of those spots, you may want to just leave a little earlier. But again, no dense fog advisories to talk about. Now the other difference aside from the increase in May Gray and cloud coverage this morning will be an uptick in winds in some of these interior spots. And while we've been talking about this temperature change for a lot of us today, the mountains and deserts will not be feeling it yet until tomorrow.
So, we do have a wind advisory in place, we're going to see some strong gusts for the Analopee Valley. It's still going to be warm. So, it is going to be a warm and windy day there today. Gusts up to about 50 miles per hour. That's also going to push us into a little bit of elevated fire danger, too. So, just a heads up for some of those interior spots as we get into this afternoon. Our temperatures pretty cool this morning.
You are still going to want a little sweater as you step outside. It is a little cooler compared to yesterday. Los Angeles and Orange County, we're just going to see really nice afternoons now for the foreseeable future until next week. Then we're going to see it get a little warmer, but most days we're only going to see the difference by about a couple degrees. That goes for the valleys in Inland Empire, too. It's still going to be warm, but not too warm, and it's going to be staying cool a little while longer thanks to that morning cloud coverage. We may have less May gray Thursday and Friday due to some wind and then some warming temperatures by the time we get toward the end of this week. And then as we get into next Monday, that's when we'll see probably a bigger shift. So this is what's going to happen as we head into this afternoon and why we have those wind advisories out toward the interior and elevated fire conditions. It's because those temperatures are still going to be very warm for the analopee valley getting into some mid 90s still today. And we're going to see some isolated pockets there of up to about 50 mph winds. So it is going to be a windy afternoon. The rest of us just getting a nice little seab breeze. These are all coming in from the southwest. Nice on push. That's also going to be why we're seeing uh this May gray here too, the next couple
