Prime Minister John Briceño of Trinidad and Tobago strongly condemned the United States' indictment of 95-year-old former Cuban President Raúl Castro for the 1996 shootdown of two civilian aircraft, arguing that the charges are unjustified and that Cuba was forewarned about the aircraft violating its airspace, representing a broader concern about how small nations are treated by larger powers regarding sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Briceño Rejects U.S. Indictment of Raúl Castro as “Unjustified”Added:
Staying on developments involving Cuba, Prime Minister John Berscenu is taking a firm stance tonight, condemning the United States's indictment of former Cuban President Raul Castro. The 95-year-old Castro now faces serious charges of murder and conspiracy tied to the fatal 1996 shootown of two unarmed civilian aircraft. But Prime Minister Brceno says those charges are unjustified and cannot be supported. Weighing in on the controversy, he's calling out the move by US authorities. Even as the decades old incident resurfaces on the international stage, >> I find it um troubling um that um that the US will now indict um former President Rahul Castro >> at 95 >> at 95 years old for something that happened in 1990s. um for something as from what I've read and what I know the [clears throat] the Cuban government was complaining that um these people were constantly violating their air space. So they were forewarned many times and eventually I think they felt that they had to protect their sovereignty. It's not something that I I think it I do not support. I don't think that it is the right thing, but you know, when it comes to to Cuba, um the Americans have a a totally different outlook on that. It's certainly something that I think um small countries are very concerned of.
We in Caracum um as I always said, we've always taken a position on Caraccom that um we're very concerned um when any country starts to interfere in the sovereignty of any other in any other country. Again, Cuba is a special case when it comes to to the Americans.
