[music] >> The events unfolding in Ukraine are a cause for concern among anti-fascists around the world.
People of different nationalities and from various countries have gone to Donbas.
I served with some great people, the Sut Remeny regiment, which was maybe 50 guys volunteers from all over the world that came here to defend the idea of Russian people that were being attacked by the Ukrainian army. From Serbia, from Spain, from Italy, from the other side of Ukraine, from Russia as well, from America. I'm not the only American that's fought here.
Alexis Castillo, a Spanish anti-fascist and his like-minded friends were watching events in Ukraine [music] closely.
April and May 2014.
Hostilities are heating up.
All of Donbas is soon ablaze.
Civilians like [music] miners, teachers, and laborers are pouring into recruiting stations.
Donbass was preparing to defend its homes.
>> [music] [music] >> Despite that, the Ukrainian government decided to designate the self-proclaimed republics as separatists and terrorist organizations.
And you can do anything you want against terrorists.
The road to devastating fratricidal war is now open.
June 2nd, the uh airplane attack, the airstrike against the uh Lugansk uh city hall.
There was a photo made after that attack of Inna Kukuruza, a woman with red hair. Both of her legs were blown off. She's sitting there looking up one moment before she died.
She's looking into the camera going, "What are you going to do about this?
What are you going to do about this?"
And it was [clears throat] like she looked into my soul.
And she was asking me.
And so I said, "Yes, of course. I'm going there to fight. I'm going to I'm going to avenge the murder of these uh innocent civilians."
On that day, eight people were killed and 28 wounded.
>> [music] [music] [music] >> Heavy fighting continued for Donetsk Airport.
It was a strategic target, a crucial foothold for the Ukrainian army's advance.
It is from beside the airport that the city is subjected to heavy shelling.
>> [music] >> And it's not just military personnel who perish, civilians do, too. [music] Kievsky district in Donetsk, closest to the airport, is almost completely destroyed. [music] From what I have personally seen, what the Ukrainian army did here in Donbas, the brutal murder they did on the Donbas population, on the infrastructure, private homes.
>> [music] >> Blogger Ronald Van Amerongen from the Kingdom of the Netherlands has been covering events in Donbas since the coup in Maidan.
>> [music] >> It wasn't military war so much. [music] Until this day, they target civilians, not so much military targets.
And that is pure terror.
>> [music] [music] >> Saur-mogila [music] is a sacred place for the people of Donbas.
During World War II, more than 23,000 Soviet [music] soldiers died in battle here.
Fighting to liberate Donbas from the Nazi invaders.
This impressive memorial [music] complex was built in their honor.
HISTORY REPEATS ITSELF.
FROM EARLY JUNE TO [music] AUGUST 2014, Ukrainian Army battalions attacked the high ground.
The hottest, bloodiest days fell to soldiers of the Vostok battalion.
>> [music] >> Out of 32 defenders, only five survived.
27 lost their lives, but they held their ground.
>> [music] >> Soviet soldiers are buried here. Their remains were found while clearing the ground of shells.
>> [music] [music] >> The Ukrainian army death toll is in the hundreds.
Two Slavic nations are destroying each other for the benefit of [music] the West.
During that terrible summer of 2014, heavy artillery shells Donbas cities and villages.
Bombs fall and snipers take aim.
What must have been a relatively >> [music] >> happy normal populated community.
This [music] was a good kind once happy family.
The children went to school. The children.

>> [music] >> Now look at what this farmstead and the entire community have turned into.
And it's not the only one.
And it's not the only one.
>> [music] >> Look at the destroyed Donbas. Our Donbas is destroyed.
