Focus On tampensis!!

[00:00:00]Hi everyone, I'm the plant propagator and welcome to my channel. Well, today I have I have a few things I want to share with you. The main thing that I want to do is is give you an overview of um most of my orchid growing space.

[00:00:18]And uh I'm going to highlight a few things and but I'm going to focus on in cichlia tampensis. Um, my largest seedling is right here. Uh, and so what I want to do is kind of start in one part of my collection, go through and and I've got tempensus not everywhere, but I've got I've got a lot of them and I'm going to be going to be offloading some uh I think next week. Uh, but we're going to take a look at we're going to focus on tampensus, but I'm going to look at some other things and I'm going to stop and highlight some of the plants that I think and the flowers and the plants and the growth and everything that you might be interested in. It's a beautiful day. I don't know if you can The wind is blowing. It It's sunny. It's warm. Yay.

[00:01:08]It's nice. Um, but we're just going to kind of take a look through things. And again, I don't have that many things blooming uh outside of the tampensus, but we we'll focus on those as we get going. Okay. So, without talking anymore here, let's take let me get behind the camera and give you kind of a really quick overview of my collection focusing on Encyclia Tampensus.

[00:01:41]And we're back. So, I thought I'd start here. This is not an encyclia tampensus.

[00:01:47]This is a a foul and this was gifted to me as fragrant and it does have um a nice light fragrance associated with it.

[00:01:59]So um we'll get we'll get to the tampensus but another one right here that I wanted to share. This is another failinopsis. This is a the previous one I should say was a this one right here is a no ID. This is a phalinopsis um corn survi the you can see a tag the chilleriana and that's that's in front of it here. But this is from the plant back here and this is putting out a second bloom spike right there. But this one is uh you know it's a nice flower.

[00:02:34]Small, really nice red. And look at the monster seed capsule forming on that flower. It's got a long way to go, but still that's a nice uh I'm I'm excited that this will be my first uh phalinopsis seed capsule. Hopefully if I get any seed out of it. Okay, moving on.

[00:02:54]The other thing that I wanted to show you is my my seedling space.

[00:02:59]So that's right here. And is if you can see, you should be able to see it's empty there and there. So I cleared out a lot of the plants that were here and that were in the way. Um, and I've got a lot of seedlings coming home from the laboratory. But right now, that's the that's the space that they're going to grow in. And right there, and maybe some down there. I got to do some rearranging. Uh but over here is a non-b blooming encyclia tampensus and this is a native uh rescue right here. So uh not blooming but it's it's doing okay. Um anyway right here is that's the first one that we can take a look at a native. There is a division another division of that native. It's right there mounted on that board. And so that's doing okay too. not flowering, but it's it's doing fine over here.

[00:04:00]Yeah, that's another encyclia tempensis right here. And this one is uh is flowering. It doesn't have a huge number of flowers on it right now. This is the first bloom on this plant. Another one right here. But the main plant is right here. So, this is was mounted on a piece of driftwood.

[00:04:24]And the driftwood was again uh put on a a hook and on my fence. But what's happened, as you can see right there, and maybe you can see down there, those are all roots from this plant right here that's growing on this piece of driftwood. Now, the problem is it it's it's on there. So, I'm going to have to really if if I ever move this plant, I'm going to have to um really wet the roots heavily and uh and remove it. Okay. So, a few other I don't know if there's any other plants. I think this might be I got to look. That might be another tampensus right here. I'll have to look for Oh, don't know. No tag on it, but I'm pretty sure that's a tampensus, too. that I just pulled a um you know I just pulled some off and it's got some new growth coming out of it. So that that will attach uh eventually. Um over here not much uh going on here.

[00:05:30]There's some nice new growth coming out of this uh walkerana there. Uh nice new growth coming out of this is uh chia lin right here. Um this is one of my seedlings. Nice new growth coming out of that one. Also, some of my seedlings are right here. Some more right here. I'm excited to see if I ever get anything out of this, the larger seedling in the back. And that's uh brasso catleabilly baby. Okay, we're not doing tampansis and we're not going to be doing it for a second. Um some more blooms coming out of my catacilus. That's a flower right there. But then another flower spike there and that'll be open in a few. Oh, and look look who's watching the catapasilus right there. Okay. So anyway, um more blooms coming on that.

[00:06:26]As we move over here again, not tampensus, but we have a there's a vanda here that um yeah, I'm going to see blooms. This thing blooms all the time.

[00:06:38]I don't really like it that much. It's got a yellow flower. It was a gift. Um but uh it's not going anywhere. It's pretty pretty much stuck on the tree. Um then I have a I keep on showing you this, but um this is a seed capsule of a rinko stylus gigantia.

[00:07:00]And that's going to be a little while before that's ready. Okay, moving on over here.

[00:07:07]Um not much going on to share with you.

[00:07:11]There is again let me get you better better video of the cata facilitus right here. So um moving on here this is I think this is booth lee and I don't know if you can see that flower sheath is back lit. So there's there's flowers in there. There may be more in there. The other thing that I wanted to share with you is that I have again this is more seedling space and uh I'm giving a I'm giving a talk next week on Monday and when I give talks I sell my seedlings. So I uh you know I'm clearing this space out because I took I'm taking seedlings with me for to give this presentation and then sell some of my seedlings. And um I don't I don't know how many. I think um I think I'm not going to be bringing very many home, but some of these seedlings are just I mean they're some of them are getting big and they're looking they're looking pretty good. Um a big catacetedum there. Big certupodium right there. Um but you know a lot of these guys anyway um I I I got a lot of seedlings coming but look at all that space. Usually there's you can't even see the uh the rack and here it's a lot of space. So it's pretty it's pretty exciting. I do want to show you which plant I think this Yeah, this is Lyla Ashtoi here. And what I and I'm going to show you this. There's nothing really special here, but I harvested a seed capsule from Laya Ashtoi yesterday and it was just loaded. So, I'm really excited about the cross that I made onto um onto Laya Asheti. Uh but the thing is when I have this and then the seed and I harvest the seed capsules, if the plant's big like this seems to be getting it, you know, it's the time to divide. So, I harvested four seed capsules from my plants um yesterday and they were all loaded and they are all looking good. Another seed capsule right there on a different plant.

[00:09:30]Another seed capsule right there on a different plant. And um again, I will, you know, could be time to Oh, really early seed capsule forming on this plant right here. Um but I'm excited because number one, there was lots of nice seed in there.

[00:09:53]But the other thing is that um it I now that I harvested the seed capsule, they're ready for uh division.

[00:10:02]Here is another encyclia tempensis right here. And it's kind of pitiful looking.

[00:10:10]This is actually a um a rescue part of the rescue. So I had the rescued plant and it was so big and it fell off the tree in pieces. So there's a part that went right here. This did flower and the flowers right there and the flowers right there. And the flowers are they're kind of wilted and look bad because the area where the seed capsule is going to form right there. Well, you can see it.

[00:10:37]There's a tag hanging from that. And I made crosses with another tampensus. So I hybridized two local encyclia tampensus plants onto this plant. So it's it's a hybrid but it's the species. And this is the really the best thing to do is to cross encyclotampensus species from uh one plant on to another that would never be able to encounter each other uh in in nature. So it does create you may be able to get a little bit of hybrid vigor out of it. It's not good just to self a plant all the time. I do want to show you this cuz I'm right here. So, if you look down there, hard to see, right in the middle, one of my seedlings, what's in the middle and it's dark green appears to be a flower spike coming out of this plant. And that'll be the first bloom uh on this plant that I or anyone else I think has has seen. So, I'm excited about that. It's it's small right in the middle there. And it looks I think it if it makes it it's going to take a month at least in order to get anything out of that. Okay, moving on. I don't think we have any more tampensus here, but we're going to take a little bit of a detour because that's what I do. So, this is a Arides odora and this uh is picked up and this belongs to the plant propagator junior. Uh she likes this plant. Me not so much. Uh but it's got a couple of uh flower spikes coming out on it. Probably be open in a in a few weeks. So again, the plant slow growing. It's been there for quite a few years. Uh she was excited when I shared this uh an image of the two FL. I don't think it's ever I think it's had one flower spike previously. The previous two times it's bloom. First time it's had two. So seems to be doing oh well you know nice root system be doing okay nice root system uh that goes up and down the tree. I do want to I don't know if we'll be able to see this. So here's an arid lorencia and down in there you may be able to see it in the middle there's a there's a flower spike a little bit behind but coming out on the arides Lorencia.

[00:13:09]Okay. So, moving on. I don't think there's anything here, but what I do want to do is go over to where we started, which is right here. And so, this is my largest seedling. And this is a seedling from a native. It's not from my native. It was from a different plant that was um that was rescued from a a tree that was a few miles from here. The one that I have was rescued from a tree that was maybe a half a mile from my house here. Um, they, you know, they grow locally. I've got one that is a/4 mile on a tree, a native that's growing a/4 mile from my house on a tree. Anyway, back to this story. This is the fastest growing seedling of Encyclia that I have. And I I call this I I've named the plant, it's silly, but I've named it Braggadocious because it's just so so prolific. So, it has it's got it's not quite peak bloom yet, but it has flowers all over the place. I haven't crossed anything onto it. I'm probably going to take the pollen from that one native. I have the pollen actually in storage from the one native that I showed you earlier. I'm probably going to cross the pennia onto this plant. But anyway, you can see how this plant is just it's it's loaded. It's got a lot of flowers. Um the flowers that are a little past prime are the ones that are starting to uh kind of turn a little orange there in the middle there. Um you know, another one right right there. But most of them are, you know, their their peak bloom and they look they look pretty good. All right. So this is again my fastest growing seedling from Encyclia Tempensus. And this is also has grabbed on. You can see the roots attaching to the trellis there and the roots attaching to the trellis there. But the main thing is the pot, the plastic pot that this was in is almost disappeared because of the root. But, you know, it then kind of wedged up against the trellis and then the roots just kind of keep on going. But this is just a solid mass of plant that seems to be doing pretty well and likes its space. I'm not sure what to do with this. I don't know if I should wait for the flowers to finish up and then divide this. I don't know. Um I mean, it's doing so well. You hate to you hate to make any changes, but you know, let me know what you think. I' I've talked to people that have had plants, their tempensus plants that have lost their plants just because they got too big and uh they just and overgrowing their pot and they just they lost them. Um so I don't know what to do here, whether I should pull a piece off.

[00:16:24]Uh it is the most rapidly growing tempensus plant that I have. Okay, moving on just a little bit.

[00:16:32]I will move up here and this is another encyclia tampensis and this is the alba form of this plant right here. So this is starting to to flower. It used to be that these were really pretty unusual, pretty rare and in nature sure they are.

[00:16:54]But if you self-pollinate the alba, you should get another alba.

[00:17:01]All right. So, I this bloomed for me for the first time last year. I've had this a year and it bloomed for me. It bloomed last year. Actually, when I got it, it was blooming and I self-pollinated the plant. Didn't get anything out of it. I because they're so common. It's actually more common locally to find the alba form than the wild form because again this was originally so rare. So that's what a lot of people made and grew. But now it's now people are looking for this. I just got an email last night somebody asking about encyclia tampensus seedlings and I do have a few but not too many um small ones. They wanted small ones and most of mine they're kind of like that but we'll take a look at them. Anyway, the alba form is right here. I'll probably just generate some seed of alba just to have it in my seed collection. Um but you know and it's a nice growing plant. This one is from um let me tell Palmer orchids. Uh but a lot of people again a lot of the local growers have the alba form because they they used to be more prized but now it's there are people that want this. Okay, moving on just a little bit. I don't know if there's anything else that we want to take a look at here. Um I don't know. So there's I've got a flower another flower coming out on um Big Dipper that's over in the corner, but I showed you that previously. So no need uh to take a look at that. Moving on here again, I'll just take a quick look at my uh seedling corner, which is all here. So these are a lot of these in the in the baskets here. And these are pond baskets that fit nicely a uh 4-in pot that I use for my seedlings. Um so anyway, you know, here seedling. They're just in four seedlings of my seedlings in each one of these pots. And some of them are like I some of them are getting big. I'm hoping I don't know. I can't see. Maybe maybe there's a flower in that sheath.

[00:19:18]Actually, that's bloomed for me previously, but maybe in that one there.

[00:19:23]I don't know. And this this the plants that are in this basket for some reason are going nuts. Lots of nice new growth there. Anyway, more seedlings there and there. Um, and again, this is the problem is that I only have I have limited space. So, I'm I can only keep three to four of each of my seedlings.

[00:19:45]And I don't even think I'll be able to do that soon with the number of hybrids that I'm generating. Okay, let's take a look. Shift gears and we got to go over and see the orchid pergola. I've got a few more tampensus in there. I don't know whether you see them from here.

[00:20:02]They're all over the place. You see them? Okay, let's take a closer look.

[00:20:07]And as we move into here, you can see maybe tampensus right there. And this is so I've got them in a few different places. This is in that pot right there is holding the tampensus that's there and giving rise to the flowers there.

[00:20:26]Um, you know, I'm not a huge people love tampensus to be honest. I'm not a huge fan of encyclia tampensus, but because people love them and they're so easy to grow from seed, I have I have a lot of them. So this, you know, again, that's all tampensus right there. And that's in this pot. Again, more flowers going up there and over there and down there. Um, there's a here's a board mounted tampensus right here. And you can see the flowers coming out. And right here, there's flowers coming from both directions. So the flowers coming from this plant right here, and then the flowers coming from the potted plant that's uh next to it. And then as we move on a little bit, yes, more tampensus flowers right there from this board mounted plant right here.

[00:21:23]So again, flowers kind of everywhere.

[00:21:27]And this I kind of broke my my rule for, you know, one to two plants from each of my, you know, each of my uh my different orchids. So, I've got I've got a lot of tampensus. I used to have more, but I need to get I need to get rid of them.

[00:21:47]Um because I don't need this many tampensus, especially from this. These are all all this one and the board mounted one that you see there and next to it there. Those are all from the same seed lot. And I don't need I don't need that many plants from the same seed lot. Um, you know, it's they're doing well. It's also, you know, the plant's getting big for this board.

[00:22:15]So, it's time to maybe pass this this on. I do want to show you something else. So, this is a uh you're not going to be able to see this very well, but this is a uh it says that this is a this is a cucalada, but I don't know whether it is or not. But the uh the thing is there's new flowers coming out and it seems to be doing I changed it.

[00:22:41]It was in a shadier location and I switched it out here and I think it's doing a lot better in this location right here. Uh moving on. See is there anything else that I want to share with you? So this is I'm going to show you this. I've showed you this. This was the plant that fell off the table in one of my videos. So, that's Mari's Glory, Avery. It's doing well. Um, I should say this also, uh, gave up a seed capsule for me, which, um, had a lot of seeds in it, so I'm pretty excited about it. There is, well, you can't see it. They're all buried.

[00:23:22]So, River Quai Pink is up here.

[00:23:24]Beautiful huge cata in this big basket. And this is a big plant overflowing. There's a pot in the basket and the foliage on this is starting to yellow. I don't know if you can see it's starting to yellow just a little bit. And kind of what that means to me is it might be time to either uppot this or divide this. And I usually try to divide and share. Uh but this also gave up a capsule yesterday and so there's nothing holding me back. I have You can't see it. This is ah in this pot right here. That's the best I can do for now. This is amazing Thailand.

[00:24:03]Uh my awarded plant. And this also gave up a capsule yesterday. So it may be and this is this plant is kind of growing out of its pot. It's doing well in there, but it might be time to divide and share this plant too. Okay, moving on. Here is Cata McGarland. And uh I actually am a little disappointed. I tried crossing onto this with one of my favorite cat species and it didn't work. It didn't make it. So, I'm not I'm not sure. This is This has this flower here and then on Oh, I can I'm even smelling it. I can I'm I'm about 2 feet away from the plant, but I can I got hit with a fragrance. There's another flower there. And then there's another flower that's probably going to be open up soon. Okay. I do want to show you one more thing. And and again, I shared this with you before, and I'm starting to get more blooms on my yellow bird. So, this is the yellowbird um right here. Just a few more blooms.

[00:25:11]Doing really well. More seedlings right there. Um anyway, everything's doing um doing really well. Here I have one. This is one of my largest I want to we'll we'll end with this. This is a uh catetum that I grew from seed right here. Um and it's doing really well.

[00:25:32]This is from Mark Margolus over in Miami. And so he u he let me flask some seed for him and and kept just a just a couple plants because I don't have the space. But uh within a very short time, this this is this is doing well. I don't know if I'll get a bloom out of it this year. Uh but if I do have that be really really fast. Uh there's my own my own catum. Some I'm not even sure which one this is on hand. But anyway, so that's all I have for you today. I just wanted to share the mostly the encyclia tampensus with you. There's encyclas and a dendrobium there. Um I just kind of wanted to share with you give you kind of an overview of things. Again, I don't have that many plants >> that are blooming right now. Um, but um, again, just kind of wanted to show you mostly in cichlia tempensis and a few other things going on. I've got a lot more things that I can share with you.

[00:26:38]Lots of stuff. So much stuff going on in the laboratory. Oh my goodness. And uh, I'm just looking at the top of this plant. I think is that a flower? I think that's a flower right there.
