[00:01:27]Kenny, we saw Bite Force take care of Blacksmith in the opening fight of the season. He's got high expectations, does Paul Metamelia?

[00:01:35]>> Well, you're talking about the 2015 Battlebots champ. And you can see the scars, the scars of a veteran bot right there. That thing has seen some wars.

[00:02:50]Currently works at a robotics startup in PaloAlto, California. In his free time, he mentors high school students in robot combat. As he told us, he eats, sleeps, and breathes robotics.

[00:03:02]Kenny, we're talking about opposite ends of the spectrum. You got Paul Ventamelia and Bite Force. They just seem so organized, so calculated, so prepared for anything. Then you got Will Bales and Hypershock, and they're emotional.

[00:03:14]They're all over the place. It's going to be a whole lot of fun. I know we can outdrive him. Uh I think we have a more powerful weapon and I think that combination will give us the win. I'm eager to to get in there and see what this can do. And I'm uh you know this is a hell of a machine and I'm just excited to see it work. We're pretty worried about Hypershock because their weapon is very powerful. They also have lifting forks that are pretty sharp and low to the ground. Strategy against Hypershock the same as everyone else. We sort of keep the front end of the robot aimed at them. We have our offense and defense all at the front of the robot. It's just really tough to drive against them because their robot's very fast and if we ever get hit by their weapon, it's very powerful, so it can do a lot of damage.

[00:06:27]>> The rumble was pretty good last year, but this was pretty satisfying.

[00:07:21]>> He's using his shortest and most reliable blade here. Ray knows Duck is [music] going to put a ton of stress on his machine and this selection should allow for more control during big exchanges.

[00:07:50]Duck will be inviting direct contact on his AR400 steel wedge in the hopes that he can do what almost no one has done before and break that devastating spinner of Tombstone.

[00:08:04]We're actually more concerned about our wheels. If he touches our wheels, they explode. They're gone. We'll try and keep our plow facing him and that's how we'll protect our wheels. The sides of that plow up front are designed to deflect me upwards, which I don't want.

[00:12:31]After a series of violent collisions, Tombstone looked to be dead in the water. But moments before a countdown could begin, Tombstone sprung back to life. Duck was already on its last legs.

[00:12:43]And the baddest bot in the world gets its fourth win and remains undefeated.

[00:13:42]And there's that croc. These guys have a long history battling the team from New Zealand. And Steven Martin says his buddy Glenn there in the middle knows exactly how to upend Endgame.

[00:13:58]>> Being two big verticals, it's going to be whoever hits first. So, it's all about the wedges on the front. This time, I've given the controls over to Glenn. He knows how they drive and he has a better strategy with the vertical spinners and a lot more experience. So, hopefully the best driver in Australia can get us through.

[00:14:14]>> They've got a big weapon sticking out the front like we do. So, we're going to try to avoid that as much as we can.

[00:14:18]>> It'll come down to who can >> who can land the driving.

[00:14:21]>> Yeah.

[00:17:10]How about right out of the gate, the shot delivered by Endgame. Well, we knew Endgame had a lot of power. It sent Death Roll across the box. Just a massive hit. And that wasn't the only one either. It was Endgame all over Death Roll, but really what it came down to was the durability of the Australian bot and the fact that it kept self-writing. You have to play offense and defense.

[00:17:33]>> Yeah, that's right. And Endgame came into the fight with that new self rider.

[00:17:37]Unfortunately, it didn't work after so many collisions.

[00:17:41]>> Endgame tried its best to get back over, but in the end, those shades look [music] like they got bought at a cheap gas station.

[00:17:52]>> Well, obviously a huge rivalry between New Zealand and Australia. Were you feeling any pressure heading into this fight?

[00:17:58]>> Oh, absolutely. They're both really strong bots. It was always going to come down to the first hit and we didn't get that. But we have the advantage of our bot can take lots of hits and you saw it just keep going and keep going. We can keep this one going for the whole competition.

[00:18:12]>> It was an amazing fight, man. Two years ago. It didn't go so well for you. You said it was all about redemption this year. Do you feel like you got it?

[00:18:19]>> I think so. I think we've shown off what our bot can do and done a great job.

[00:18:23]>> You got the win. You got the finish, man. Congratulations. Well done.

Does he strategy ever change for Duck? Not really. Duck is a brick that goes into every fight betting that he could survive more hits than you can give. But in this case, [music] he also has that lifter that he could use to get under Cobalt.

[00:19:36]>> Cobalt looks just nasty, Kenny. How did they beat Duck here?

[00:19:40]>> Check out their wedge on the front. That thing is scraping the ground, which is great for feeding their opponent into the spinner, but there's always a risk of that catching an edge on the floor.

[00:19:53]Our [applause] strategy against Cobalt is similar to other spinners. We're just going to ram their weapon as many times as we can.

[00:20:02]They're the kind of robot we like to fight. Vicious, violent spinners. So, Duck needs to show that Duck can do what Duck can do. We're going to use the same disc as we used in the previous match against Subzero. It's uh it's got a nice cutting edge, so we're hoping it'll do some damage and bite into their armor.

[00:20:19]be good to try and get him into kind of a death roll. If we hit him side on or front on and get him rolling, then maybe hit him at the arena. I think that's the our strongest tactic really.

[00:20:32][cheering] >> Robots activate, >> Kenny. It sounds like neither one of these teams is going to back down from an allout brawl here. That's right. This is a big fight for Cobalt. Duck is going to force them to test the outer limits of their reliability and rely more on strategy than brute force. And one thing's for sure, there's going to be a lot of big hits in this one.

You can hear Cobalt's weapon already up to full speed. And Ducks getting under COBALT TRYING TO USE the battle box, and he can't. Uh-oh.

[00:21:48]Right in front of [screaming] HUGE HIT BY COBALT. WE CALL THAT FLYING DUCK. Holy smokes. There's another one.

[00:21:59]Wow. But right there you see the durability of Duff. He got FLOATED IN THE AIR AND IT GOT FLOATED IN THE AIR AGAIN. A HUGE CHIP OFF THE BACK OF DUFF.

[00:22:09]THAT ONE GOT HIT right off the battle box. AND AGAIN, COBALT HAS GOTTEN UP ON HIS SCREWS, BUT DUCK GETS AWAY. HEY, HE'S GOT A BENT PEAK, DUDE.

AND WHAT OTHER BOT COULD SURVIVE THIS KIND OF POUNDING OTHER THAN HAL ROBERT? OH, just OFF HIS FEET, CHRIS. AND BIG IS OUT OF THE RAILS. OH MY GOSH. BUT DUCK IS STILL WORKING. DUCK IS STILL MOVING EVEN WITHOUT A FACE. IT'S A DUCK ONLY A MOTHER COULD LOVE. WOW. NOW Cobalt slowing down a little bit. Those are some of the most insane hits I've ever seen in Battlebots. UNBELIEVABLE. I HAVE NO IDEA HOW DUCK IS STILL GOING.

And listen, Cobalt did exactly [music] what they needed to do. They look like the vertical spinner version of Bronco, tossing Duck around like a rag doll.

[00:24:27]They kept hitting and kept hitting, but this is what Duck does. It survives. And then Cobalt fell victim to its own ground scraping wedge, caught an edge on the floor, and all of a sudden it was over. [cheering] [applause] in the red square. All hail the reigning king. So impressive all competition long, but team Witchd Doctor comes up just short in the Battlebots World Championship final.

[00:30:26]Kenny, I'll be honest. For the first minute, I thought Witch Doctor had this one.

[00:30:30]>> Yeah, I tell you what, they were plucking those forks right off of Bite Force, doing a great job. And they were potentially one fork away from doing a lot of damage to Bite Force. But again, Paul Bentamelia, even when it looks like he's on the ropes, all he needs is one opening. You make one tiny mistake and Paul is going to take advantage and make you pay. Bite Force. So powerful, so durable, so deadly.

[00:30:58]This has really been the story all year for Bite Force. No matter how many hits they took, no matter how much damage they had, Paul and his team always found a way to win. They used strategy, they used precision, they even stepped in and brawled when they had to. Eight straight fights, Bite Force demolished every bot in its path. And now Paul Benilleia gets to hoist yet another giant nut.

I think Gruff's going to be able to get underneath that repeatedly first. And as far as Gruff goes, if there's ever a bot that truly lives up to its name, it's this creation by Sam Mcus [cheering] [cheering] ready.

Uh hit a beautiful suplex, was carrying the extinguisher bot all over the battle box. Uh, but I think he maybe put a little too much effort into it and burnt out his motors.

[00:41:34]>> And that is such the key. This is a threeinute fight. And how many builders have told us that 3 minutes like feels like 10 minutes when you're outside the battle box because you just don't know.

[00:41:45]So much can go wrong at any given second.

[00:41:48]>> Being able to pace yourself uh and also manage your aggression. I think he was out there to really try to impress the selection committee with this win and uh he burnt out his drivetrain in the process.

[00:42:03]>> John Flack, [cheering] how surprised are you that uh you were able to reverse the fortune of your robot midway through that fight?

[00:42:13]>> It was pretty good. We haven't had a lot of luck this season and some of the stuff that we've been doing during our downtime is kind of paying off.

[00:42:23]Were you a lot more satisfied with with how Extinguisher was driving?

[00:42:27]>> Yeah, it it really liked driving with the spinner on it instead of the hammer.

[00:42:31]I think the weight was making it a little bit easier to control with the differences in where the weight was.

[00:42:38]>> John, congratulations. Is that the most frightening firefighter you've ever seen over your left shoulder, by the way?

[00:42:44]>> Um, no. My That's just my dad. He's like our mascot.

[00:42:47]>> Yeah, he is kind of the team mascot.

SOMEHOW STILL OPERATING, BUT THE MAIN WEAPON on it isn't uppercut. Have not seen you back. [cheering] >> Uppercut really isn't, Chris. They're going around in circles. THIS COULD BE AN INSANE INSANE UP. THE COUNTDOWN IS STARTED AND THE NUMBER FOUR SEED UPPERCUT HAS THE MAGICAL [screaming] RUN TO THE END. TWO, ONE, KNOCK OUT.

[00:45:20]Kenny David Jin told us before the fight he was going with a face first strategy and the dude he wasn't lying. No he wasn't. And here's the result. Uppercut shredded Ribot's front two wheels and ripped their face clean off. But Ribot hung in there. Chris, a high stakes pushing match ensued with both bots refusing to surrender their ground. And then the moment of the match. Uppercut drops its pulverizer, sending both bots screaming across the box. And what do you know? The Frog survived and the number four seed lost half its drive and did not. Unbelievable. Ribot able to stay afloat in this match with only two wheels. But once Uppercut lost control of one of theirs, it was game over.

[00:46:20]>> Yeah, I I absolutely did. I have no idea what happened in that match. We were getting I mean, our robot is all over the arena right now, >> David. Just as you planned, huh?

[00:46:32]>> What What What happened? What was the strategy? Talk us through that fight.

[00:46:37]>> So, we wanted to hit him directly on the disc, but uh I mean, some of the hits landed on the disc, some of them didn't.

[00:46:42]We lost the weapon pretty early on. We lost both of our front wheels. We lost about the first third of our robot. Uh the back wheels are still turning though.

[00:47:34]Oh, yes. The rotator of course so durable. First two fights of the regular season went the distance >> and one of Victor Sudto's most successful techniques is feeding those wedges and spinning just like that.

[00:50:31]Kenny, I got to be honest. I don't know where to start with this fight. Is your heart going to be able to take it? I mean, this was crazy. Both of these guys had their opportunities at knockouts.

[00:50:41]This fight was one of the best I've ever seen. Tantrum able to control rotator out of the gate, rack up damage and aggression points, and heck, even bully Victor Sodto's bot onto the upper deck.

[00:50:54]>> Yeah, Tantrum was definitely ahead on the scorecards, but this is where the fight took a turn. This collision right here. Tantrum got hung up on a piece of debris in the battle box and Rotator started going to work.

[00:51:07]>> Yeah, actually when Rotator became inverted, they started to do significantly more damage.

[00:51:12]>> Yeah, that's right. They were attacking from above and Tantrum was just kind of circling for a long time and it looked like Tantrum was about to get knocked out.

[00:51:21]>> But then chapter three, Dylan Carrey, the driver of Tantrum, found a way to free the bot and get his team back in this match.

[00:51:30]>> Unbelievable. The fans were going nuts.

[00:51:34]All signs pointed to this fight going to the judges where we know of course anything can happen. But in the waning seconds, Tantrum got underneath Rotator, as you can see, took it coast to coast, launched it out of the arena for the knockout. That was an instant classic.

You were pinned in the corner and then all of a sudden before you know it, you're throwing rotator out of the arena. Alex, that was insane. Yeah. Like in the middle of that, we were at the at the ropes. I'm shaking right now. This is crazy. That was an awesome fight.

[00:52:40]>> We were on the ropes in the corner. He was beating on us, but we got movement again and we just took it to him. We just we brought it. That was awesome.

So, we were scared coming into this one and halfway through the fight when we weren't moving there in the corner, we've got a really smart drive team. We were using our self rider arm to get unstuck, thinking smart, hanging in there. And I think tantrum took hits and it kept going. They kept going.

[00:53:51]>> Oh, Chris, we're finding out those forks on Cobalt are working out really well SO FAR. AND OH, huge shot by Cobalt. And another follows it up nicely. Daniel Freight's having trouble keeping his machine on the ground. Kobalt the aggressor so far over near the upper deck. Now he gets away and oh man, there goes one of those forks. This fight may come down to durability here, Chris.

[00:54:15]right in front of us now. Both those weapons are huming at full speed. Cobalt leading on Minotaur. Daniel Freight pushing back. Going to be way more difficult for Cobalt with just one FORK RIGHT NOW. OH, HUGE SHOT BY COBALT.

[00:57:18]>> We've sung the praises on Daniel Freightos for years now and with good reason. Kenny, the dude never panics. He just absorbs the punishment and he kept on coming in this one.

[00:57:29]>> It looked like the Brazilians were going to lose this fight. Chris Minotaur just persisted. They had a plan. They wanted to get rid of those forks first. It took them a little while, but once they did, here was the shot. Boom. The final fork goes flying and in a haze of its own smoke, Minotaur turns on the aggression, punches the throttle and grabs the match by the throat, knocking out Cobalt cold with only seconds remaining. A legendary comeback.

[00:58:21]Uh they they had removed our fork, our other fork was not getting them, but we just had to go keep going, keep going, see if somebody breaks. And it broke and we got on fire, but it's worth it.
