NRA Takes Spanberger to Court Over Virginia Assault Rifle Ban

[00:00:00]get into it here. Well, first we're going to lead with that gun bill that was passed. Let me put this up here.

[00:00:08]If I could uh get my screen working correctly. Let me share this tab over here. This is WRICTV in Richmond reporting here. The bill placing restrictions on assault weapons in Virginia was signed into law Thursday and it's immediately facing a lawsuit.

[00:00:28]Folks, we told you this is what was exactly what was going to happen as soon as Queen Affordability put pen to paper and signed this bill into law, the lawsuits were already put in the cannon and just waiting to be fired off and that is exactly what happened. Spanberger signed Senate Bill 749, which is which will make it illegal to sell, purchase, import, or transfer assault weapons in Virginia starting on July 1st. Supporters of the bill say it will make Virginia safer by removing weapons from war weapons of war from its streets while opponents say it will punish law-abiding citizens rather than criminals. Well, of course it will. It will punish people who are trying to protect their families, protect their lives, protect their property, especially if you have Steve Descano as a prosecutor in Fairfax County. The poor people in Northern Virginia are going to uh we're we're actually we're all losing our rights, our God-given rights, but especially if you have Steve Descano as a prosecutor, you're going to need those God-given rights to protect your family and your well-being.

[00:01:41]Speaking of Fairfax County, this is where Senator Saddam Aslan Saleem of Fairfax the chief patron behind Senate Bill 749 called Spanberger's signature a quote monumental victory for public safety.

[00:02:00]Now, Salim is the Bangladeshi man who is now serving in Virginia's Senate, and he is behind this legislate this piece of legislation here. He says this achievement is the collective work of countless advocates, elected leaders, and groups who have fought tirelessly for gun violence prevention long before my time in the General Assembly.

[00:02:22]By contrast, the NRA called Spanberger's decision a drastic move to disarm lawful gun owners. Before the ink of her signature had dried, the organization filed both state and federal lawsuits challenge the bill.

[00:02:36]"As promised, we are taking Abigail Spanberger to court." A statement from the NRA reads in part, "Throughout this legislative session, the NRA and our members fought Richmond's radical gun control package tooth and nail. We made it clear that this extreme anti-gun proposal, which bans the new purchase of commonly owned firearms and standard capacity magazines in the Commonwealth, is a blatant violation of the Second Amendment rights and an affront to this landmark Supreme Court cases.

[00:03:08]It is possible that the NRA's legal challenges are not the only ones SB 749 will see.

[00:03:15]The Trump administration previously threatened to sue Virginia. That's Harmeet Dhillon. She is at the Department of Justice working for Donald Trump, and she has promised to sue the pants off of our governor, Abigail Spanberger, who is behind who's pushing this illegal gun grab here. And essentially, what they've done is they've taken common guns, common magazines, common and what they're trying to say are these common guns are crazy, and they should be illegal, And you shouldn't be able to have them. And of course, if they have 15 rounds in the magazine or more, you can't you can't have that. You shouldn't be able to buy that. And so what they've done with the bill is they have limited rifles. Now, any rifle they're calling an assault firearm. Now, that's a made-up Democrat term. Uh any gun can be an assault firearm. And a gun's gun's a gun, right? But what Democrats are referring to what is assault firearm is a rifle.

[00:04:30]And what they have done is they basically said, "Hey, you can't purchase these things after July 1st."

[00:04:36]Uh and anything you can if you purchase if you have purchased rifles before July 1st, if you purchased magazines 15 rounds or more, 30-round magazines, whatever, if you if you have that stuff all by July 1st, you're good. You're good. You're grandfathered in. And the Democrats are ticked off about that.

[00:04:58]You've seen some of the some of the response to this news that a lot of Democrats here, especially Soleimani who pushed this bill forward and Abigail Spanberger, while they're crowing about this illegal gun grab, which I'm pretty sure it's going to be obviously going to Supreme Court. We'll see if if if two-bullet Jay Jones has the same track record that he does in Virginia State Supreme Court with the illegal gerrymander that he does with the gun grab, then it will most likely be illegal.

[00:05:29]Um what they're saying here is is that these guns, these magazines, they you shouldn't have them.

[00:05:36]And so they're going to stop you from buying them after July 1st. They're going to stop you from transferring them, passing them down to a family member. You can't You can't sell them after July 1st. And what they're going to have to do is prove to the Supreme Court that they are in fact unusual weapons, AR-15s. Not a lot of those in the country, right? Not I mean that there's so few of those. I mean that's that's just so unusual. They're not They're not not a common weapon. I mean they're going to have to go to court and say that. I mean if they I mean that's They're going to have to prove to the conservative Scotus that these these assault rifles, quote-unquote, are unusual, cruel and unusual. Well, good luck with all that. [00:06:36]Do what Democrats do best and that's sell guns, sell accessories, get people to go to run to the store and buy as fast as you can. You know, remember Obama back 10 years ago was was buying up He the federal government was buying up ammunition at the time, but he also was driving the consumer to go out and buy up ammunition at the time. [00:08:06]But we'll see for how long. The other thing and and and the uh No one asked me to do this, but I know for a fact that the VCDL is having a meeting on Sunday and a good friend of mine uh is going to go in and cover that meeting and and videotape that meeting and he'll be on the show next week to talk about what's discussed at that meeting, but that meeting is going to be at the Let's see here. It's going to be the regular meeting if I can find that note and where it went.
