When parents push neurodivergent teens to try harder, their nervous system perceives this as a threat, causing the prefrontal cortex (responsible for planning and task completion) to go offline; effective parenting requires creating safety, lowering expectations, and breaking tasks into small steps to help the teen's brain process requests.

The harder you push a neurodivergent teen to try—the less they're able to. #specialneedsparentsAñadido:
Okay, parents, time for a hard truth.
The more you push your neurode divergent teen to try harder, the more their nervous system goes offline and the less likely they'll be able to complete tasks that you're asking of them. With neurode divergent teens, this isn't attitude.
This isn't defiance or them on purpose being difficult. is literally them perceiving a threat and their preffrontal cortex going offline. When they perceive a threat, the thinking brain, the logic brain, the brain that can process new information literally goes offline. So, you're trying to get through and ask for task completion from a brain who cannot properly process it. So, we need to strategize to be more effective. We need to calm the tone. Sometimes we need to lower expectations and break it down so that their threat response can go down and they can in turn listen to what you're actually saying.
This isn't soft par parenting. This is using a parenting approach that will actually work for your neurode divergent child.
