LIVE FEED: Severe weather in north GeorgiaAdded:
make this fairly condensed, but I'm going to have extended coverage here in just a moment on our WSB now live stream and you can follow along there for some more coverage. But here's what's going out. Tornado watch remains in effect. So far, we've been fortunate. There have been no tornado warnings, no reports of damage from these storms, even though some of them have been strong. We had some hail in White County earlier this evening. Now, these storms still have the potential of producing some damage and we continue with a tornado threat.
So been watching this very carefully.
Heavy rain in Gwynette County moving to the east across North Fulton. And then another powerful thunderstorm coming out of Pulk and into Pauling County. Any of these have the potential to become strong or severe. And then this one here in eastern Alabama in towards Randolph County just about to move into West Georgia also has the potential for some damaging wind gusts. And that tornado threat extends well back towards our west and southwest and will continue to spread to the east. So on television, we're going to go back to regular programming now. Have a complete wrap-up on WSB tonight at 11. More information then. If a tornado warning is issued, we'll come back on TV live. But for those of you who want some extended coverage, we're going to continue that now on the WSB liveream.
Okay. So for those of you watching on the live stream, let's take a little more time talk about what's going on and what what I expect here in the hours ahead. So, the most significant severe weather threat has been and continues to be central and southern Alabama and southern parts of Mississippi. There have been some powerful tornadoes that have been detected in southern parts of Mississippi this evening. Now, that portion of the storm as it continues to slide to the east, that's going to stay south of us as these storms move into Georgia later. So, there's some good news there. This line of storms, however, moving through metro Atlanta and North Georgia continues to have a severe weather threat and an evolving a developing flood threat as we head through the night because there'll be more storms developing even past midnight. So, this is a look at some radar estimates of rainfall so far near Gainesville. About an inch of rain, lesser amounts of course in the south metro so far. And then parts of far north Georgia up in the mountains over two inches of rain. And what I expect is going to happen is what we call training. That is where storms as they move out additional storms develop behind them and that continues one after another like train cars on the tracks.
We call that training. And when you get that training of heavy downpours and thunderstorms, you can really get some significant rainfall totals developing.
So, here's how that's going to go as we head through the next few hours. 11:00 towards midnight and 1:00 a.m. the storms that are out there now push farther to the south and east affecting Athens and Eaton. But more develop back with this cold front to the west and continue to spread to the east 4 a.m. So the areas that have already had between one and two inches of rain will get another round of storms. In fact, likely a couple more rounds of storms between midnight and 4:00 a.m. So we could easily add another inch or two of rain.
Meaning there isolated spots that could have up to four inches of rain. That's 4 am. Still the potential for some stronger thunderstorms. This is 6:00 a.m. Heavy downpours across metro Atlanta and North Georgia. 8 am mainly light to moderate rain, but a few isolated downpours and some heavier rain here down into parts of the south metro through daybreak. Now, as we head through the morning, we're going to finally see an end to this. So that by noon, the last of the rain moves out. In fact, by the afternoon on Thursday, we'll see some breaks in the clouds develop, becoming partly cloudy. Let's talk about the tornado risk specifically. Of course, that's the biggest threat. It's a fairly low risk certainly in this area that's gray, that's very low risk, not zero, but you get into the yellow and and the orange, that's a a low to moderate risk. And that's what we're going to be watching here very carefully with the storms that are out there now. Here they are on radar in the tornado watch area by 11:00 55 minutes from now. Still going to be watching that very carefully for the possibility of a tornado developing.
Then as we head towards midnight 1 2 a.m. 2 am is the time that the tornado watch is scheduled to expire. There'll be scattered showers and storms out there, but the tornado threat likely to really begin to diminish at that time.
not completely gone as you see, but certainly much lower. And that'll be the case through three, four, five, 6 a.m.
There'll be just a few spots with a very low tornado threat. Of course, we're going to be here watching it very carefully. So, the risk of heavy rain, well, it's already happened, of course, and also developing flood threat.
Rivers, streams, creeks, and urban areas with some heavy downpours can get some flooding. Damaging wind potential continues to be the main threat outside of the heavy rain. And the overall tornado risk again is fairly low, but over the next couple of hours, we got that tornado watch in effect in those strong storms. Still the potential we could have some tornadoes develop. So, here's what you need to know now before a tornado threatens. This is just good to review periodically anyway. If a tornado threatens your area, you want to go to your safe space. Here's what it is. Lowest level of your house. If you have a basement, it's your first choice.
Otherwise, the ground floor and you get to an interior room, you want to put as many walls between you and the outside as possible. You want to stay away from windows, the potential for broken glass.
In addition to TV and here on the live stream, also get warnings on the WB weather app. You can download it here, wptv weatherapp.com to your phone.
That'll push warnings to you. And of course, stay tuned here to TV and WSB now. So, here's another check of Storm Tracker 2 HD. Heavy rain, thunderstorms, an ongoing tornado watch. Again, if a warning is issued, we'll bring you to that, bring that to you immediately live on channel 2. Otherwise, a complete wrap up and other update on WSB tonight at 11. I'll see you then.
