The brain performs four key functions: protection (detecting threats and triggering fear responses), prediction (creating thoughts to anticipate future scenarios), adaptation (forming new neural pathways through neuroplasticity), and homeostasis (restoring balance and equilibrium). The 'I' or sense of self is not a static entity but a continuously evolving psychological model constructed by the brain from all experiences, memories, and neural networks. Understanding that biological processes like fear, sorrow, and anxiety are natural protective mechanisms rather than problems to be resisted leads to greater peace and freedom from suffering.

Understanding the Mind: Bridging Ayya's Wisdom and Neuroscience | Mr. Balasubramanian
Added:Good evening everyone. A warm welcome to all the members of Sri Bhagwat mission family and our [clears throat] today topic is understanding the mind insights from Aya and neuroscience.
This ascent will help us understand the mind through the wisdom of ayas and the perspective of modern neuroscience enable enabling us to lead a more peaceful and conscious life.
It is my pleasure to welcome our speaker Mr. Balisman. Thank you sir for your joining us and sharing your valuable insights with us. Without further delay, I invite Mr. Balisra Many sir to begin today's section.
>> Good evening everyone.
Welcome to the session.
This is going to be completely in English.
So what we are doing here is we are trying to understand ayah through these discussions from different perspectives to deepen our understanding.
So in that particular [clears throat] line of thinking uh today we will look at some different perspective uh from what does uh you know the neuroscience says and how does you know ay's insights and the neuroscience are giving us a deeper understanding.
So Aya's insights are [clears throat] purely scientific.
Whatever he says has a scientific basis.
This is what is the ultimate conclusion.
Uh we have come after some studies on neuroscience uh certain aspects relating to biology.
So this is going to be more a reflective kind of inquiry that we will take draw some parallels from science and see uh how I is able to get deep insights.
So the key understanding theorist or the key thing that neuroscience says the brain does certain things which is the function which is part of the biological system and nothing there is actually a problem.
It is all basically doing certain natural functions.
We experience it with the help of mind.
Okay. There is a difference between the brain as a organ, brain as a biological system created by the nature and our mind which is experiencing the functioning. There is a small difference between the brain and the brain as a instrument and mind as the experiential aspect of but we deal only with the mind. We have no control over the brain.
Just like we don't have any control over the heart, we don't have any control over the lungs. You know Haya calls it or many of our teachers say they are all involuntary.
So if you understand the nature of this instrument what it is trying that is what I is trying to say biology is doing it job mind brain is doing it job but the mind tries to resist. That is where the problem why does it resist?
This is what we are going to see the science perspective.
So what we will be seeing is just looking at this [clears throat] from this biological perspectives and then finally we will see what is as the way to deal with examples. So actually I have done a lot of so the first thing is in nature everything is a verb.
There is no noun in nature. It's all in a flow.
The planets keep on working.
Similarly, our biological system, our life, it is a movement. It is continuously moving, continuously evolving. Scientists are saying now the universe is expanding.
All the planets are working. There is no mana. It's all manuas manas as it's all flowing.
So life is a verb.
How does aya put it even to the students in a very simple way? It is a happen in the biological system. It is a happen.
Okay? It is continuously moving. It's a movement. It's a river.
heart, lungs, our immune systems, our hormones, our brain, everything is moving and working all the time.
So in biology everything is how thoughts they are also movement. They are also continuously evolving. So what is thoughts from a neuroscience perspective? We will see what is shortly means. Emotions are themselves movement. They are changing constantly.
Memory is again movement.
Okay. Now the beauty is often says about the I from a neuroscience perspective is also a continuously evolving phenomenon. It is not a static one. I feel I am I am experiencing the I itself is a psychological it is a feeling that I exist. But from the brain's perspective, biology perspective, it is a continuously evolving integrated system, it's a neural network uh of all our experiences, our memories, everything. But continuously it is changing because I am experiencing every second as I am experiencing every second. The I is also evolved.
I says every time I is okay na that concept if you really study that is what the neuroscience view also.
So we understand two things biology and psychology. [clears throat] What is biology is the study of the living system.
If you take a human being that is it's a system human entire human being is a marvelous nature's creation it has the cardiovascular system the heart and all the related things the digestive system we have the respiratory system you have the endocrine system immune system nervous systems and so on they are all continuously functioning without asking for our permission it is nature working.
Neuroscience studies one branch there brain and the nervous system. This basically technique.
Now psychology this is talking more about the mind, thoughts, emotions, feeling, behavior, attention, memory, identity, the eye.
These are all basically the subject of psychology.
Biology and psychology. You are a combination of the two.
Now what is the relationship between these two? Biology is brain.
Psychology is mind. These two are integrated systems working and that's why we are as human beings working. How do we understand the difference between brain and mind?
Now music and violin if you take the two things violin is the instrument music is an expression of the instrument the same way brain is the instrument biological instrument which has its own components various components doing various jobs mind is an expression of it brain is the biological organ mind experiences Okay. The functioning of it.
So neuroscience says how does the brain work?
Psychology asks how is that working?
Experience. So for us we know only experience the expression.
I often say by the time we become conscious of something it has already happened.
What does he mean by the biology has already done its job. We come to know of it much later. We'll see with some examples.
So, biology writes the first draft.
Okay. Psychology comments on it later.
It forms opinions. It's a commentary on the word.
So, I hear a loud explosion before even I think what happened. The brain has responded mainly.
The heart rate has changed.
muscles are getting prepared. Then the psychology comes and says I got frightened and then I try to remember it. I try to recall again very interesting thing if you see from neuroscience memory it's very very important for us to function in the society both good things and bad things everything we need constantly the biological system creates that memory without that functioning is not possible it's because the recall you need to have that time I did something that recall must there.
So I remember both the things biological moment comes first and then the narration psychological narration comes later. This is just to understand how these two things integrate and both are nature's creation.
The misunderstanding of the system creates problem. That's all what I understand what I is pointing out. Just puridal puridal. He always insists on puridal. Just understand this.
Now very interestingly neuroscience ask this question.
Why did nature create the brain?
The beauty is the brain does four functions.
Four key functions.
And if you understand these four functions, every emotion we can explain with the help of these four functions.
Every experience we undergo is a function of these four functions of the biology.
The most important thing the brain its fundamental nature is to protect survival.
We have to survive first.
That's the key to most of its components work for survival. [clears throat] It is designed like that.
So what are the four functions it performs? Then we will understand and explain the emotions based. First is protection.
any threat it detects and immediately creates certain supportive things to protect it. I often say why does fear come to you?
Okay, I see a physical threat. I see a snake.
I have to act immediately.
So aya often says fear comes as a natural response. It has to come to protect you.
We have to survive. That's how we have survived. So so fear is biological energy. Fear is biological intelligence.
Nothing is against us. It is all trying to do certain function. So we have to use the field. fear energy that's what has often uh the lesson that he gives us the second most important function we we'll discuss this fear part a little in detail this few things second important function of the brain is to predict what is this prediction our entire system biology and psychology everything just creating In this I there is one single integrated system.
It's not one separate entity. I is not a separate entity.
It is an integrated system.
What are this system? It has old memories.
It has old experiences. It has also all the current happenings everything in a distributed neural network as they call it. It's not in one place and it is all contin. It is not a static one. It's a dynamic one. But it is available for us to respond to a situation nature has created. Without that, I can't be talking to you. You can't be listening to me. As you're listening to me, you are experiencing and you will be comparing this with something you heard earlier or with your own experience and there is a updating of that happening.
It is called in mathematics integration.
In mathematics there are two concepts integration differentiation.
Differentiation is needed to interact with you because I have to differentiate myself.
I am so and so. I have certain experience. I interact with you.
But to act from my total understanding I need to integrate everything. And that is changing all the time because I am updating this. It's a beautiful system like a CPU central processing unit in my computer.
And why is it required? Because prediction what is about tomorrow I have to plan. I have to basically do various kinds of work. What are thoughts?
Thoughts are basically for prediction.
Unless I have the capacity to think, I can't predict tomorrow. One thing the brain it doesn't like is it survival base. So it doesn't like uncertain.
So when anxiety comes, it is a response to uncertaintity. You have to do something. The energy comes because it has to protect itself and it is trying to predict the future.
Okay. thoughts and we are often talking about a problem called overthink. Nothing wrong with overthinking. Overthinking means it is trying to say with reference to the future uncertaintity the brain is getting overactated to solve it. So what do we do? How do you deal with overthinking? Allow it to overink. That's what I don't resist.
Brain brain is doing the job.
If you allow it, it will naturally settle. Because what is the third important function of the brain? It adapts. All organisms, living organisms constantly adapt. How do they adapt? They update from every experience.
They slow down. They allow they allow new neuronal pathways to form.
The best example is sorrow. See [clears throat] after all we are dealing with two three major emotions where we have problems. Fear, sorrow, these are the two major ones.
Anxiety, stress before.
So what is sorrow? I lost somebody.
I lost something. Financial loss.
Now what happens is the brain's prediction network gets shattered because you have been planning something with various things.
So how does the brain respond?
It tries to form new part new neuronal circ.
There is a beautiful book written by um Mr. It will solve itself. It will adjust but you must allow it to happen.
To give the example of ayah come he often talks about certain people how they attain this because they dropped resistance. They allowed the biology to do its job.
adapting for any difficult situations and last important function. Fourth one is the most important thing.
Brain and the whole human body is a system.
It will always move towards equilibrium.
It's called homeostatis. Technically move towards the balanced flow. Flow is its nature.
dry off and say that is its original nature. Original nature is free flow. It will try to restore it all the time. It will heal. It will heal itself.
This adapting this changing forming new habits, new funeral purpose also called neuroplasticity in the language of neuroscience.
So first is survival protection.
Second is to protect you have to predict.
Okay. Then only I can function in this society without these functions of biology. I have to adapt as a living survive and somehow the equilibrium is formed and again it moves that gets disturbed again like that. Of course the system can fall sick all that can happen and uh there is one branch which of uh medicine know a patch acupressure and all say allow the nature body will heal itself mind also will now what is the greatest invention of this biology the I is thought it is a capacity psychological capacity.
I simply say every thought has a thinker.
There is no thinker without thought.
There is no thought without thinker.
These two are inseparable.
And we have seen in our earlier discussion that this separation when thinker tries to separate himself from thought the conflict comes.
Okay. When you don't resist observer is the observed as JK say.
So here what it says is the biological functioning creates this I naturally but there is a purpose for which it is created. What is the purpose? It is for dealing with the society dealing with the external world. Aya puts it beautifully separating it from aaman pura for external use only. This I which is an integral of all my experiences continuously updating process according to neuroscience. It is a continuously updating system updating process.
Purpose is to deal with the world.
Purpose is to serve the world. In fact, I have put in one particular ayah calls it um he put in one particular lecture beautifully. It is meant for serving outside.
We can't have a civilization without it's not a separate entity. It is an integrated model continuously constructed by the from many interacting neural networks.
Okay. The whole system is a network.
Okay. There is autobiographical memory.
If you ask me um where did you uh take your birth, where did you go to school, which college you went, what was your experience etc. I can tell you that's my autobiographical memory. I have emotional memory. Sir, I suffered that injury that day. My habits, my beliefs, my values, language, social roles, my fears, my hopes, expectations, future plans, my rel everything is an integrated model. Together we call it I.
It's not in one place. It is continuously assembled. When new experience happens, it's again changes.
It updates.
Now the beauty is that I told you in biology what they say is everything is a verb.
This is also a verb. It's called self.
It's a self model. Neuroscientist will call it a self model.
Self thing is happening all the time.
That means self-referential refers back to itself and it is continuously adapting updating itself.
So we think we possess this eye actually from a biological sense.
The psychological self is not something we possess. It is something that the brain continuously constructs.
Okay. So this is basically the idea exactly what has explained in na the biological equalist.
Now what is the beauty here? I have discovered this I is an excellent manager of the external world.
It cannot control the biological process. When it tries to control the biological process or when it tries to resist the biological process, problems come. [clears throat] I is meant for the external world where it has to plan, communicate, organize, create, navigate everything.
But it can't control the heartbeat.
It can't eliminate the fear. It can't escape from sorrow.
It cannot digest the food. Digestive system has to do it.
So so many years of evolution the biological intelligence has created this but it does not require the psychological self model to regulate psychological self model deals with the external world allowing the biological intelligence to this is from the is perspective now the problem is these are movements. I is also a movement. Lot of movements happening.
When one is trying to control the other, the resistance happens.
There is a biological movement, biological response, then there is this I which is trying to say resist that then there is a we will see some examples of how this happens.
So the psychological self is produced by the same biological intelligence.
Now just to take some examples to make it clear.
[clears throat] Now we said four functions are performed by the brain. Protection first.
Now there are two important organs in the brain subsystems functions in the brain.
One is what is called the amigdala name doesn't really I mean it's not important but understand one function is a security guard in system if this is not there we won't respond to threat there is a snake I will not even respond extremely dangerous it is designed to protect us the amigdala gets triggered the moment a particular danger is sense first we will take a physical danger. I see a fire. I see a vehicle fast approaching me. I have to avoid.
So these are physical threats.
Immediate response is amigdala gets triggered. Certain hormonal changes happen.
One of the hormones that gets secreted that comes that gives energy for me to act fight or flight.
I have to do I have to act at that time I cannot do careful thinking and I must act immediately to avoid the danger.
So I often ask why fear comes? Fear comes for this particular purpose. It is natural. I can't resist fear.
Okay. I should use that pure energy to act.
Okay. So the point is this is natural biological systems response.
And then there is the other calm analytical capability which is called the prefrontal cortex.
Another aspect of the brain that can analyze data and take decisions rationally. But that part will not be working at that time.
Now the problem is we talked about a physical danger.
When there is a psychological danger there also the same process happens because brain cannot differentiate between there the psychological eye gets threatened.
There is no physical danger. For example, somebody hurts me or recently I had an experience recent not recently um there was this you know cyber crimes happening.
Okay. So I was one of the earliest victims.
Now everybody is aware what are these things that are fake calls and all. It was in the beginning. I never had any I was one of the first persons to experience that.
So a call comes and somebody comes and say switch on your WhatsApp your police station inquiring your other god was linked up with some crime and all kinds of things and see we have not heard of that thing suddenly idea was to of course make money they wanted to ask the bank account and all but I was completely my psychological thread hijacked me completely amigdala activated. I could not even think not even think how this possible. It's all a fake. Now it all looks silly but it is called cyber at the time. So the physical danger and psychological these two things are there.
So when psychological danger happens also the same thing that fear comes everything.
So what is basically there the problem again the same thing resisting the fear.
So if I started accepting the fear using it, I could have thought also but even the thinking was not possible at that point because I was resisting I trying my energy was wasted in resisting.
So prediction as we said the brain the the mind is also part of the whole thing both are working together. So for the purpose of prediction thoughts thinking overthinking another example same thing overinking happened because there was threat I had to do something how can I escape from this so lot of overthinking happens but it is again a natural response for protection I must constructively so in one occasion when the overinking happened I started noting down what the hood of to over don't resist often gives a solution even for OCD problems. OCD is some kind of extended over so the resistance can create this problem because we don't understand biology.
So from a neuroscience perspective cooperate with nature this is all it is trying to say. Now adaptation as I said when there is sorrow sorrow when I drop all my efforts I can't do anything because I lost somebody J Krishna Morti lost his brother's example the entire future they had planned everything got shattered so when that was a What did he do? As for explanation, he allowed the whole thing. He never resisted.
So the biology automatically construct new networks, new insights and sorrow is the flow.
He often gives the example of fear of death.
He simply allowed it without resisting a biological process.
So they discovered something that flow is what is the concept that is. So what happens during sorrow?
It is again the neural network trying to adapt the nervous system updating the internal model of reality. It takes time. Okay. It is also called neuroplasticity. Takes time for the model to adjust.
Then the fourth function is restoration.
The all the system they go to the balance equilibrium state of because they're always flowing always act.
Biology as we said it is monolion it's constantly changing and memory is required for function that is all okay so thoughts are required for prediction in the brain language called simulation is for production memory is required for updating the internal model to function.
Sadness or sorrow is required for reorganization. So these are all the psychological expressions of the biological processes from a neuroscience perspective.
So nothing is actually happen for some reason. The ayah's message is cooperate allowing Resisting creates problem. Suffering begins when resistance to the natural system. Then we start fighting with fear, sorrow, escaping from that.
So when fear comes, it is coming to help me. Instead of that if I start fighting with fear I am trying to fight with somebody who's trying to help me.
Okay. So this is the conflict which wastes energy and creates a problem.
So the brain is unable to distinguish from a physical threat or a psychological threat.
So how to use the fear is what we should fear nothing wrong. Once I understand there is nothing wrong in fear I will what is very important is um when we understand these things what happens after them. So suffering is nothing but resisting a natural biological process.
Okay. When ayah says what it means is there is nothing to change. It's all that it's all happening.
You allow the flow to happen naturally things will settle and it move to the homeostatis or the balanced state.
Now please note because we have understood again and again we go back.
So we experience a certain sense of freedom on hearing ayah and then what happens this is not going to last long.
Why? Because biology is always working.
A new threat comes I'll have to have fear.
Understanding does not change biology.
It changes our relationship to neuroscience. Biology or neuroscience all mean the same thing. Here fear appears. Okay. The self model will say this should not happen. Then resistance suffering will endless loop.
Resistance to resistance to resistance go. But once I understand fear is appearing biologically nothing has changed.
So now I don't say this should not happen.
I understand what it and use that energy to externally act.
Okay. So freedom is not freedom from biology.
Freedom is freedom from resistance. We are not resisting biology.
I will never feel fear again. No, nanis also face fear. Everybody faces fear because that is biology.
Neuroscience will not support.
So if there is a loud one who dies, we have to feel the sorrow. That is what is natural. They are not failures. They are expressions of a healthy biological system. Okay. So now um we can basically um sum it up with a beautiful story I narrated when he said his niece or somebody uh who had some issue during the uh delivery her BP was raising and doctors are all saying this BP is raising control this control it was very dangerous.
Then I went and told her in your condition first time delivery some issues are happen premature delivery or something naturally BP in your condition whoever it is BP will it is normal nothing unusual has the moment I said the BP of the person came down his knees knees daughter.
The reason is she dropped the resistance. She accepted the natural biological process.
Anxiety is a natural biological process.
Biology lives in flow.
It is constantly updating restoring balance.
Manolasa is new things are formed. But psychology which is required for function okay but we need to use it and work with.
So uh what we want to basically say finally is when we understand what nature wants.
Nature wants us biology wants us to cooperate nothing is going to change. We understand it. So we live with the cooperation of that.
So neuroscience is absolutely supporting giving a beautiful explanation for ay's insights aya is a in that respective extremely scientific is what can say so let me stop yeah any clarification any additional viewpoints we can discuss Yes sir.
Good evening sir. Here how are you sir?
>> Oh fine very fine tell me sir.
>> Thank you sir. Thank you for your detailed explanations.
Uh sir here I want to discuss regarding the conscious eye conscious.
Uh you you beautifully explained that is nothing but the mind is constructing the I feeling like that is uh as I teaching we understood I is coming from thought.
Uh so every thought is two part that is thinker and experience and experienc.
So you beautifully said that I is nothing but mind is continually constructing the feeling that is we understood and really great insight about as a great insight for us. Thank you for that. So my uh discussion is so as spiritual world in the spiritual world we call detachment like we should not identify the eye conscious with our kind of spirituality. So if you explain I you explain eye conscious is constructing constructing mind with as neur neurology. So where this attachment is coming we are thinking while I is feeling happy we are feel we feel like happy if I is having tragedy like tragedy this attachment how it is happening can you explain this in scientific manner where this attachment is happening so if it is not attachment then where we are standing as a point of view they call and this is a liberation this is the like end of suffering. So many things are there. So many words are there in spiritual in scientific manner. How can you explain that is I understood I is mind thing. So how are we attaching this I and how should we detach from the eye and if we detach where we are standing can you explain in this can you explain this thing?
>> Very good question. Very good question.
Again I appreciate Aya's insight in this. He has put everything contains all these beautifully.
What is that memory? See in memory uh the I is the integrated model as I told you it it integrates all the information everything.
So in the memory when I experience uh something good say a good uh sweet I taste a good sweet or a comfortable feeling something.
So that pleasure okay that comfort factor is stored in the memory.
So when that gets disturbed similarly the discomfort factor is also stored. So the memory comes into okay. So the memory so from the memory likes and dislikes are formed. Okay.
That is also from the neural network perspective. Each person it's all a it's all a kind of certain uh cognitive knots are formed in the neural network. My belief system, my value system, these things get formed. Why they are getting formed? The brain it wants to protect and predict that this is how my behavior will be. Okay. So these are all the natural byproducts of biology.
Point number one. Now I think you are talking about spirituality where where this I are you getting into the spirituality angle?
>> Yes sir. Yes. Yes. I I I I got I got this insight from teaching.
>> So I feel the I is not part of this that I clearly that that >> the I is understand that's a biological process.
Okay. We understand it is required for our functioning.
Our identification with it is also naturally required. then only I can respond as a person to somebody okay it is all functional take it as function but an extra dimension comes that I want to protect myself that is natural okay my likes my dislikes all these things come up I try to resist I don't like fear I don't want all these things up now from a spiritual angle We are not getting into the spirituality. I also spoken about it in some of the books.
That is the what he talks about as awareness.
Okay. Now awareness is our basicness existence consciousness.
Okay. that aspect in psychological in neuroscience they don't go much deeper into that the hard problem of consciousness they leave it at that stage okay so the spiritual angle from the neuroscience perspective is a separate subject what is that awareness but we understand from is perspective yes that fundamental basic Tamil as he calls it. Okay. So that is a spiritual act. But if we understand the sense of freedom of the mind uh by dropping the resistance those things will naturally evolve is what we can we can see.
>> That's a slightly that awareness slightly beyond the thing. We can have a separate sort of discussion on that from a neuroscience perspective. What how does spirituality is view?
Thank you sir. Thank you. So you are saying with the me with the help of memory we are catching the we are catching the good and bad moments with our feeling that is the detach attachment attachment the memory is taking the part of the constructing of I in the brain brain neural activity. Yes.
Why does it do it?
>> Why does it have that? How do I deal with it tomorrow?
>> Yes. Yes.
>> If I come and borrow you every day.
>> The next day I come, you are going to be careful, right? Naturally.
>> If he said, sorry, sir, sorry to interrupt you. If you say these are all natural activity these are all the essential things our body physiology psych psychologically physiology we need this activity because it is natural survival kit >> correct >> then why human being attain liberation to overcome all those things >> because he's experiencing the discomfort he wants to get free from because he's resisting the resistance He is resisting the nature.
Fear arises. I try to resist fear.
Sorrow arises. I want to escape from sorrow.
But that reality adjustment time if people understand that as natural then they will live cooperatingly within it. That's what I is telling us. Why is he advising that that knees to cooperate with nature? It's natural. Fear is natural. Allow that energy to we don't want that because of our inmat.
We don't want that resistance understanding replaces resistance.
Then the we experience.
>> Yes sir.
>> Thank you sir. Thank you. Thank you for your >> and even if he aya says that is where we really seek inside even if there is a resistance takes it take it at natural.
>> Yes. Yes.
>> Then at least we will not fight with it again.
Yeah.
Yeah, here I understood if we if we have the clarity about our neural activities and body activities of all organ have the clarity about all the functional uh activity of organ it is giving it giving itself I think >> exactly that >> have the clarity have the clarity this is what it is this is mind this is this is conscious behaving >> that is precisely what I telling us all this is no everything you are already in that state things are happening naturally problems come then we resist which is again a misunderstanding Okay, Priya sur you have question.
>> Thank you very much.
>> Yeah, thank you. Thank you.
>> Uh welcome.
>> Yeah, please. Please.
>> Um so, um when you you were talking about the fear, so um so I'm I used to be scared to drive long distance.
Uh but then I pushed myself uh once or twice and um drove um 2 hours went for a 2 hours drive kind of thing and that only made my fear more and after that after that anytime there is a mistake say anyone comes close to crashing into me or some it might be others mistake as well or mine uh I go backwards again I'm more fearful even to drive short distance And whenever I try to push myself um there there is a lot of palpitation happening. Um so I'm I'm doing only the basic where where I want where I need to go to work or I need to drop the children. So I thought maybe being staying stepping back might help.
Stepping back has helped a little but there has been no big big improvement.
So um I don't know fear. So how do I accept fear when I'm starting to palpitate? So imagine I have lost my way and I start to fear.
>> Um what do I do here sir?
>> See um the pulpitation will increase.
Palpitation naturally comes because of the protection. Our nature is to protect ourselves first.
>> Okay. Fear as I said is a biological response that happens because of the uh need to protect our first is survival.
That is a natural response.
So step one is to accept it and not think that something bad something to be avoided. When we resist fear, fear compounds.
Okay. But when I take fear as the energy and I try to focus on say driving is your problem. So certain practice right?
>> Yeah. When we try to um practice >> more and more of practice neuroplasticity, you know that practice will help you to you need to focus on the external action. Mhm.
>> What needs to be done for example driving you can um in the driving schools they give you a certain simulated environment where you drive not real driving >> you practice it and then when you go to the real one so we need to engage ourselves into action today.
>> Okay.
>> Right. So systematically because brain adapts. Suppose you have no choice except to drive. That is the situation.
>> Something happens and you have to reach that place and you have only the car.
You know driving but there is no other alternative to survive. You have to drive then you will drive.
[clears throat] >> Yes.
>> So uh this is the question is how we use that fear optimally.
So I had an experience of getting being caught in a foreign country um without uh uh I mean uh return ticket which was weight listed.
So that was the situation where I could not sleep over thinking because how how to survive how to get out of it. So what I had to do I cooperated with the nature because it is over thinking to protect me. I just jotted down whatever it's trying to tell me. Can I do this? Can I do that? Can I do that? So so many different possibilities come out of the situation. I started jotting down.
So after that the brain naturally settled down and I took certain action also. It helped me come out.
>> So I have to >> you need to turn Yeah, you need to turn towards an external action. Use that fear constructively.
Like Sona often gives that example of driving. He had attended camp. He had the same problem only in August.
>> He used to give that example.
>> So how he overcame the fear of?
>> Okay. For now can I take it as um if I am panicking or palpitating go >> take it as natural. Take just natural.
Don't accept it.
>> Yes.
>> Take it as natural. Say it is all right to have this.
>> Exactly. Exactly. It's okay. There is a reason why it is coming. There's a reason why.
>> When I come back home, I practice that rude or the uh whatever it is through Google something.
>> Yes. What needs to be done to deal with?
>> Okay sir.
>> Physical action, external action.
>> Sure. I'll definitely try this sir.
Thank you so much.
>> Satish Kumar, you had a question.
>> Hello sir, good evening.
>> Yeah.
>> Yeah. like um this is I'm trying to get some question uh get answered related to this I uh which is in the center and around we have uh psychology uh biology, neurology, sociology and allology. Okay. So like when this I is dissatisfied the when the I is not happy. So to whom the I will complain okay I am not satisfied I'm not happy is the I going to complain to the biology or psychology or philosophy or sociology or neurology or uh spirituality.
So where this I will complain >> say I I is complaining to itself actually the I is a psychological aspect psychological self constructed as per neuroscience perspective >> it is fighting with itself it is because biology is the movement say suppose it creates a fear for some situation now I don't like fear >> yes >> right I resist fear whom I am complaining right the I also part of the whole system it's all one one system there is one movement biological movement there is one psychological movement they are all part of the same neural network >> the is complaining it to itself that's what they saying there is no you can't fight with yourself you are basically fighting with process you are fighting with the biological process.
>> So when is I is dissatisfied and complaining uh about the I to the I itself. So who will answer to the I >> no no no answer it has to drop the resistance it will flow it has it has to understand that it is basically fighting a battle with itself.
Okay. So the dissatisfaction is the fight. Uh so I need to drop stay with it. Stay with it. Don't try to resist that one.
>> Don't uh don't uh resist the dissatisfaction >> and it may dissolve or like the may >> it will flow. It will it will solve by itself. See biology restores balance. M >> aya says our state is balanced already it's flow >> okay >> we don't have to do anything >> okay just be >> yes I >> be be with that it is it is natural be the moment you are with dissatisfaction you are already with it >> correctly for example like when I am >> you you and dissatisfaction are not separate >> correct like when I am uh going to a tour and seeing a sunrise, right? I should not ask like uh where this sunrise comes, where this sunsets, where this wind comes, uh where it comes between the mountain. Correct? Where this uh uh stimulus comes, correct? So I need to blend or I need to integrate or I need to dissolve with the integrate.
>> Integrate with the experience.
the experience. Yeah.
>> So when this eye is getting dissatisfaction in terms of biology, psychology, whatever itology, so it needs to drop that resistance and it needs to flow as it is and it will flow. Okay?
>> It will flow.
>> Okay? because it is it is separating itself from dissatisfaction as though it is different from dissatisfaction and trying to fight.
>> Okay.
>> Actually, it is not separate. Thinker and thought are the same. Two sides are same.
>> The is not uh liking the uh liking the satisfaction or not disliking the dissatisfaction.
Right? So I will not take anything into >> say I have memory from the memory we have we like certain things we don't like certain so that >> we are trying to move towards what we like that's a natural tendency >> yes >> but reality may be otherwise I I don't things will not happen according to my life >> correct >> so I am unhappy >> okay >> so if you take it as natural don't fight with It will move the satisfaction natural.
>> Got it. Got it.
>> Thank you, sir. Thank you. Thank you.
>> Yeah.
Any questions? So you can ask like just hand so you can keep uh sir you have time should your last question you can keep this one.
>> Yeah. Yeah we can have one. No problem.
>> Okay sir. Okay.
>> Any any questions? Satish you can unmute.
>> Yes sir.
>> Yeah I have one last question. So like the when we talk about the numerology and um biology right or the brain.
>> Okay. Like when I was a child um so I touched the fire. Okay. My then um it went to my brain. The brain cells uh uh brought me cry. Actually I started crying. Then my mom taught me see like uh this is fire if you touch it then um you will uh get hurt. So this uh how this neurology and brain uh works uh together.
>> Say brain actually biology biology and psychology only we are dealing with it.
>> Yeah correct. Biology and neurology >> psychology psychology >> psychology. Yeah. So uh the biology from a biological sense when you are you went and touched the fire without knowing it is harmful or feeling hot.
>> So that experience [clears throat] of uh >> heat the pain >> got stored in your memory.
>> Okay. That comes under biology. Correct.
That comes under.
>> No, that comes under biology.
>> Okay. Biology. Okay. Mhm.
>> But psychology, this this whole integrated memory, >> okay, needs to be available to you when you go out.
>> Correct. Whenever next time I see the fire, right?
>> Next time when you see fire, this has to come know that that is where >> psychology comes into picture.
>> Correct.
>> That comes into picture. It is it is there for dealing with the external world.
>> Okay.
>> You need that whole system. So biology and psychology works together.
>> Right.
>> So then brain activates the neural science or neurology the nerve not to touch the fire. Correct. Like stay away from the >> correct that experience is psychology.
That experience of heat and associated with that you have also fear. Right. All that is psychology.
>> Okay. Unless see there you need some fear because then only I will avoid it.
>> It has to protect.
>> So that protective aspect of the brain creates >> this I for [snorts] >> correct. So whatever like negative protection or positive protection both are good only right?
>> Very important. See there is nothing called negative thinking. Aya always says please note negative thinking is very good because it's protective thinking.
>> Yeah, this is what I have on actually >> the negative thinking thinking is nothing but protection aspect of the brain.
Say suppose tomorrow if I feel it is going to rain >> okay >> right >> I have to go out somewhere should I carry an umbrella not carry an umbrella or if I'm a former whether I have to do this or that it is always good to take precautions >> sorry >> negative thinking is basically nothing but coming from the protective aspect of the brain If it gives me that signal, I need to act on it. I need to say okay, can I really um you know believe this or there's some weather forecast. I have to do something in spite of that things can go wrong.
That is the >> sometime it may be a belief and sometime it may be a we may get some evidence also. Right. Uh correct correct check with that and then accordingly act but if you're a superstitious person uh here you know when you just walk across a cat crosses you you feel okay I need to wait for some time and then go doesn't matter not a big thing >> but nothing wrong with it because the the brain wants some protection that's all understand it from that perspective biological >> so like uh when we negative uh negative thoughts also good for us.
It's >> Yeah. Yeah. It is basically coming to protect >> protect us. Correct. So one of the negative thought may bring anxiety also.
So >> it may bring anxiety also. So what is anxiety? Anxiety is the energy.
>> Correct.
>> For example, right?
>> Correct. For example, like a person traveling to office daily. He communicate uh by his own car. It takes half an hour correct like um >> uh one day right like 15 minutes he crossed only like 2 kilometers >> and uh the map shows like it will there is some accident happen like it may take four more hours to reach the office >> office >> correct so that time the car like he may get fear >> correct he will get fear >> so then like he may he can take a decision whether to travel next 4 hours or like return to home.
>> Correct. Absolutely.
>> He has to take a conscious decision there.
>> So like then like we have only option to make a decision.
Correct. So we don't have any control on uh our anxiety or negative thought or uh >> use the anxiety. We don't have control over anxiety. It is naturally it has come to help you as energy. Okay, >> use it to think through. So what should I do now? Can I go this way or that way?
What are the alternate? Can I go back?
Take a decision.
>> Got it. Got it.
So there is one rubber band theory that I read today actually like a person like who get anxiety then he always wear rubber band he put the rubber band fast then he suddenly he get pain actually that time um this brain activates and feel the pain and uh that few minutes uh few seconds he will use for putting a positive thought into his brain.
and uh then gradually his anxiety goes and he gets time to take make decision actually. So that's what >> these are these are yeah yeah yeah these are uh techniques that you can use >> for uh dealing with that movement of anxiety >> correct >> for example for example take some slow deep breathing four or five times do deep breathing the anxiety will slow down >> got it >> okay it will slowly reduce then you can use it for thinking so uh there are simple techniques to yogic techniques today.
>> Okay, got it. So the takeway is like we cannot uh complain about I will take just we need to uh don't restrict anything if as it is. So the negative thoughts also good for us. So we can take only take decision and uh we allow the negative thought also. So it's coming us to save us only. All right. So what is another question which I asked like uh before this I just forgot actually biology biology biology or psychology correct yeah thank you thanks for that sir thank you thank you thanks >> thank you >> great session today >> fine thank you >> uh I think sir another one question also savikumar I think are you free now sir >> yeah yeah raikumar you can ask raise your Ra, come on.
Hello.
>> Yeah.
>> Yes.
>> Yes. Yeah, basically Forever.
Okay.
for English.
Okay.
Okay.
and the English.
Okay.
organizers.
Okay, good feedback.
Okay. Thank you. Thank you.
>> Okay.
Okay.
Thank you. Thank you Mr. Baliser for your insightful session and valuable guidance. Thanks to all participants for joining us today. We hope you found it useful. On behalf of Sri Bat Mission Salem, thank you once again. We look forward to seeing you at our next section. Have a great evening. Goodbye.
Uh Satish Kumar, reflexes and thoughts are part of life but they do not usually explain something.
>> Yeah, there is one person asked a question actually. Uh it's a reflection or thought. So >> it's a it's a it may be like sometime it may be reflection or sometimes maybe thought right? Good.
>> Uh whether life is mere reflection and thoughts kindly explain it.
Uh yes mind see life is it is just not mere reflection and thought slightly more than that so it is since uh it it's a very uh detailed question say why are we having all this discussion there is something you know freedom freedom sense of freedom you know aya calls it as mti what is that that's what we are basically trying to understand but we understand that it is our nature.
So life the reflection and thoughts are all helping us to realize that finally you can put it that way but anyway that is a question that we will examine again in detail.
What is the purpose of life and the things like okay we can close it sir we'll come
