The corn and soy that make up industrialized feed are a solution of convenience created to scale industrial production. They work for that. But for the backyard breeder, for those with a small plot, or for those who want to produce with autonomy, there is a much smarter and much cheaper way.
The system that Mr. Benadito had set up at the back of his land was a living composting structure specifically intended to produce black soldier fly larvi. This information might sound strange at first and might even cause some discomfort for those hearing it for the first time, but I need you to continue because what I'm going to explain to you now is one of the oldest and most efficient pieces of knowledge that exists for those who raise chickens at low cost. The black soldier fly is an insect that exists in almost the entire world and has an extraordinary characteristic. The larvae of this fly is one of the organisms richest in protein and fat that nature has ever produced. Modern studies have already confirmed what ancient breeders knew through observation. The black soldier fly larvae has more protein per gram than beef. It has essential fatty acids similar to fish and is naturally sought out and consumed with enthusiasm by chickens, ducks, fish, and many other animals. And the most impressive thing is that these larae reproduce and grow by feeding on any type of organic matter. Food scraps, fruit peels, vegetable leftovers, manure, decomposing leaves. In other words, they convert organic waste into pure protein in industrial quantities. But here is the detail that took me years to fully understand. It's not enough to just throw organic matter in a corner and wait. The system needs specific conditions to work efficiently. And Mr. Benadito had discovered through trial and error over decades exactly what those conditions are. When he explained it to me, it seemed simple. But it also can't be a place completely without light. The black soldier fly likes to lay its eggs in places with some light and access to the outdoors. An area with partial shade, such as under a tree or covered by a simple structure that allows ventilation, is ideal. The third condition is the collection structure.
This was the smartest detail that Mr. Benadito had incorporated into his system and that I would never have thought of alone. When the larve complete their development cycle, they instinctively migrate out of the organic matter to transform into pupé and then into adult flies. They climb up, seek the exterior, and migrate toward elevated edges. Mr. Benadito had built an inclined ramp coming out of the composting bed, which ended in a container positioned outside the bed.
The larve, following their migration instinct, would climb up the ramp and fall directly into the container, and the container was strategically positioned inside the chicken coupe. The chickens ate the larve directly from the container without any manual labor. The system fed itself. When I understood this, I stood there looking at that structure for several minutes saying nothing. It was so simple, so elegant, and so different from everything I had learned in recent years, buying feed and bags and trying to optimize costs. Here, there was no optimization. There was integration. Nature had already solved the problem. Mr. Benadito had only created the conditions for nature to work. But the story doesn't stop there.
Because there is an additional layer to this system that transforms it into something even more powerful. And it's this layer that makes the difference between a system that only supplements the feed and a system that completely eliminates dependency on it. Black soldierfly larve consume organic matter with impressive speed. A well-established system can process kilograms of organic waste per day, but what is left over after the larvai develop and migrate is not useless trash. It is a very highquality compost rich in nitrogen that functions as one of the best natural fertilizers that exist. Mr. Benadido used this compost directly in his vegetable garden and the vegetable garden produced greens that he also used to feed the chickens and the chickens produced manure that went to the composting bed feeding the larvae system. It was a closed cycle perfect where nothing was wasted and everything was transformed. This is what the ancients called land that works for those who respect it. It wasn't poetry.
It was a precise observation of how natural systems work when you don't interrupt the cycle with industrial products that break natural biological chains. I set up the system on my property 3 months after that conversation with Mr. Benadito. I started small with a bed of just over two square meters using reclaimed wood, straw, kitchen scraps, and cow manure that was in abundance. In the first few days, nothing happened. I stood there observing the bed with a certain skepticism, I confess. But on the 12th day, when I went to stir the organic matter with a hoe, it was bubbling with life. The quantity of larvae produced can be controlled and expanded according to need. If you have 10 chickens, you start with a 2 to four square meter bed. If you have 50 chickens, you expand the system with two or three beds in simultaneous operation at different stages of development. The system scales along with the flock without proportional cost. You don't pay more per larvae as you increase production.
Nature simply responds to the amount of organic matter available and produces more protein proportionally. This is fundamentally different from the logic of industrialized feed where the more you raise, the more you pay and the margin per animal always remains tight.
With the larvae system, the more you raise, the more efficient the system becomes because you have more manure feeding the bed, more organic scraps available, and the cycle naturally accelerates. I know some people listening to this now are thinking that it seems complicated to set up or that it requires a lot of space. And I need to clearly dispel that misconception.
This system works in any space. I have seen it work perfectly on apartment balconies using 20 L stacked buckets with calibrated holes. I've seen it work in 4x4 me city backyards. I've seen it work on rural properties of hundreds of hectares. The scale changes, but the principle is always the same. organic matter, moisture, partial shade, access to ambient temperature, and a simple structure that allows for the natural migration of larve to the collection point. The cost to set up a basic system is practically zero if you have access to reclaimed wood, straw, or dry leaves, and some type of organic matter to start. The only thing you don't need to buy is the fly. It arrives on its own when the conditions are right. In warm climate regions, it arrives in days. In colder regions, it can take a few weeks, but it arrives. Now, I want to show you how the system connects with another piece of ancient knowledge that Mr. Benadito had also taught me, and that further enhances food production for the birds. Because the black soldier fly larvae is powerful, but it is not the only organism that can be produced in this type of system. to feed the chickens. The California red worm, which many people know, is another organism that can be integrated into the same living composting cycle. The worm processes a different type of organic matter, prefers more decomposed and stabilized material and can coexist in wellestablished composting systems. The difference is that the worm doesn't migrate on its own like the fly larvae.
You need to harvest it actively. But with a simple sie and 5 minutes of work, you can separate worms from the compost and offer them to the chickens as an additional protein supplement. And there was even a third organism that Mr. Benadido kept at the back of his land that intrigued me for years without me understanding its function. It was a bed of crawling plants with broad leaves that he watered regularly. It wasn't for human consumption. It was a specific planting of plants he called protein plants which included lucina, pigeon pee, and chia, also known as tree spinach. These plants have a protein concentration in their leaves much higher than most common forages, and chickens consume them with pleasure when the leaves are chopped and mixed into the compost. Lucina, in particular, fixes nitrogen in the soil and grows luxurantly even in poor soils, producing biomass in abundance all year round.
With these three integrated elements, larvai, worms, and protein plants, the system becomes truly complete. The chickens receive animal protein, vegetable protein, essential fats, vitamins, and minerals in abundance. And the cost of feed can be reduced to zero or near zero depending on the size of the flock and the efficiency of the system setup. I'm not talking about theory. I'm talking about something that has been in continuous operation on my property for years and that works with a regularity that industrialized feed could never offer because this system doesn't depend on freight prices, doesn't depend on the corn harvest, doesn't depend on government subsidy policy, doesn't depend on anything you can't control directly with your own hands. And that is exactly the central point of what I try to convey here. True autonomy is not reducing the cost of feed. It's ceasing to depend on it. It's building a system where the earth produces the food for your birds in the same way it produced it before any input company existed. And this system is not a novelty that someone invented yesterday. It is exactly the opposite of industrial logic which depends on constant external inputs and which weakens the soil with each cycle instead of strengthening it. Here I need to make an important observation about the issue of bird health because this is an aspect that many breeders underestimate when talking about feeding. A chicken fed with live larve, worms, and natural protein forage presents a very different health profile from a chicken fed exclusively with industrialized feed.
I'm not just talking about the more orange yolk or the shinier feathers, which are the most visible external signs. I'm talking about disease resistance, a more regular reproductive cycle, lower mortality and climate stress situations, and thicker, more structured eggshells. The reason for this lies in the composition of the foods. The black soldier fly larvae has in its composition an element called laurit, a mediumchain fatty acid that has natural antimicrobial properties.
Recent studies have confirmed what ancient breeders observed empirically.
Birds that feed on these larve regularly have a lower incidence of intestinal problems which are the main cause of mortality in commercial flocks. This means that in addition to reducing the cost of feeding, you also reduce the cost of medication and veterinary treatment. Do not use raw meat, bones, or animal fat at the beginning as these materials require a more mature and established system to be processed without creating an odor. Position the bed in a location with partial shade and good ventilation.
In warm climate regions, black soldier flies will naturally find the bed in a few days and start laying eggs in the crevices and edges of the organic matter. You don't need to buy eggs or larve to start the system. Nature does this work for free if the conditions are right. In milder or cold climate regions, the process can take a few weeks, but it happens. The migration ramp that Mr. Benadito had built is a simple addition you make when the system is already producing larve. It is an inclined surface that can be made of cardboard, thin wood, or even burlap positioned coming out of the bed toward a bucket or container positioned on the outside. Mature larve, following their migration instinct, climb up the ramp and fall into the bucket. You position the bucket inside the chicken coupe and the chickens serve themselves directly.
This is the complete system in its most basic form. There is no hidden secret, no special ingredient you need to buy, no expensive tool you need to acquire.
What there is is an understanding of how nature operates and a willingness to build the conditions that allow it to work in your favor. And now I want to talk about something that goes beyond the practical and economic issue because I think it's important to say this clearly. When you build a system like this, you are not just saving money. You are recovering a way of thinking about food production that was deliberately deactivated by the industrial culture of recent decades. You are choosing to understand the cycle instead of buying the solution. You are betting on observation and ancestral knowledge instead of blindly trusting what the industry says is necessary. This has a value that goes beyond the cost of feed.
It has to do with real autonomy, with genuine independence, with the feeling that you understand what happens on your property instead of being a passive consumer of inputs that others produce.
