IONNA takes over Circle K Chargers in WIlson, NC!!!

[00:00:00]Hello, and welcome to another episode of The Average EV. Today, I am at the Circle K in Wilson, North Carolina. And these aren't Circle K chargers anymore.

[00:00:08]That's right, they are Ion chargers.

[00:00:10]Let's get into it.

[00:00:12]>> [music] [music] >> So, a while ago, Ion actually struck a deal with Circle K, and they are taking over most of the Circle K chargers, and they're going to be retrofitting in their HCS 400s, and having the Ion rechargers be located now at Circle K, which is really cool. And actually, when this happened, I was really excited, cuz I was like, "Please, please, please, make sure that the Wilson, North Carolina Circle K gets Ion." And guess what? Here we are. And it's actually really shocking because from the date that this went offline to the date that it went online, it was 11 days. So, Ion ripped out the Circle K chargers, put in their chargers in 11 days, and here we are. We can now charge on the Ion network. So, what I'm going to do, plug in, get charging, and then show you around this site. All right.

[00:01:04]So, of course, I have plug in charge, and it should be 20 cents right now.

[00:02:08]Uh and that's okay, not the end of the world. All right, so let's go ahead and take a look at this site. So first off, I'll show you the site and then explain a couple things. So we have one two, so two CCS, and then three a NACS.

[00:02:23]So that's four CCS vehicles and two NACS vehicles. And that actually makes sense because there are Tesla Superchargers right here. So if there's a Tesla, they're probably just going to go there out of habit. But this might be cheaper.

[00:02:36]I'm sure Tesla's just going to drop their price to match Ionity or maybe we could see some cutthroat competition here.

[00:02:43]But that's that.

[00:02:45]We have our H by C for hundreds. If you've been on my channel, watch my videos, you know all about these bad boys. There's some mislabeling cuz there's a big screen that says 20 cents per kilowatt-hour. There it is.

[00:02:55]First week only. And then and they do that all their sites. And then up here it says 39 cents. So maybe I don't know, whatever. It doesn't bother me.

[00:03:04]Another Equinox EV, nice. Uh so I'm in here charging 85 kilowatts.

[00:03:09]There's that.

[00:03:11]Okay.

[00:03:12]Uh and then this is technically the the the accessible spot. And the Equinox is actually going to the uh Tesla, which is interesting.

[00:03:19]Um so here have the hash area for the accessible spot, which is right there.

[00:03:24]And then what's really interesting, I want to talk about this now. So if you were ever here when it was Circle K charging, this was actually a charger. So they just put a trash can on top of it. Um under there I guess we see like like covered up conduit or whatever. Uh but they decided to drop this down to three.

[00:03:42]And I guess that makes sense because these can output 400 kilowatts.

[00:03:48]And the transformer they have. So this is the Tesla transformer. They got 2,000 kVA right there.

[00:03:58]Right there is the transformer for the gas station.

[00:04:02]And then over here is the transformer for the Circle K charging or or now Ionity.

[00:04:07]And they have a 1,000 kVA right here.

[00:04:10]So, if you add 400 up, 400 400 400, that's 1,200. This is 1,000. So, this is much better suited. Whereas if they had 400 400, that'd be 1,600 on 1,000. And and they'd have to do some uh site load balancing if if everyone plugged in at the same time. So, this is probably a better choice for them. I'm not sure if maybe one day they can upgrade this to a bigger transformer, but this is plenty fine, especially with the Tesla Supercharging here. But it gives Ionity a little bit more visibility cuz this is a great spot. 95's right over there.

[00:04:40]Pull off, come in, charge up, grab a burger. I've never been here before.

[00:04:44]I've been here before, but I've never eaten here before. And then you can go on your way. You got a trash can, you got squeegees, everything you could ever want at this really great charging location. Really quick, just to give everybody a walk around of the area. We got this Crystal Circle K here. So, Crystal's like a burger kind of chain.

[00:05:01]And then Circle K is just a really common gas station, especially in the South and um out West.

[00:05:09]Like Colorado I know has a lot of Circle K's. And then we got a Waffle House. We got a Taco Bell. Looks like a bank or something. We got uh Shell over there.

[00:05:18]Quality Inn. So, pretty decent stop.

[00:05:20]I've always liked this one. And um this is definitely a place that I would want to stop if I'm heading this way on 95.

[00:05:28]And everybody, I actually I forgot. This used to be 10 charging spots, not eight.

[00:05:32]So, this was a charging spot, too.

[00:05:34]So, that it was 10. So, they went from 10 down to six. But now you have higher output, so hopefully quicker throughput.

[00:05:42]We'll see. And these used to do was 180, but then it would split to 90 90. So, now we've got 400 which splits 200/200.

[00:05:50]So, before they had 10 on a 1,000 kVA.

[00:05:53]So, that's 100 kW per charger. So, yeah.

[00:05:56]Uh interesting, interesting.
