Is Canada Really in Recession?

[00:00:00]Canada is technically in recession. We call it technical recession. Now, what's the meaning of technical recession? The meaning of technical recession is when the GDP of the country declines in two consecutive quarters.

[00:00:15]And in Canada, what we saw was in the fourth quarter of 2025, there was a decline. Now, in the first quarter of 2026, it's basically unchanged and flat.

[00:00:31]According to the definition, it's a technical recession. But, it's not as bad as people would want you to believe because this is not a disaster level recession. The reason is that the regular quarter-to-quarter shows that Q1 in this year, 2026, was flat. It was not a sharp fall. So, Statistics Canada says real GDP was unchanged in quarter one, which is Q1 of 2026, after falling 0.2% in Q4 of 2025. So, we're not in a recession.
