UrbanFarm2026 - Radix Sant Cosme team - Round 2Added:
Welcome to this project on sustainable urban agriculture, where we explore innovative methods to improve food production in limited urban spaces.
This study focuses on transforming underutilized areas into productive micro gardens using raised beds, vertical planting systems, and hydroponic [music] techniques.
The main aim of this project is to evaluate sustainable cropping systems that can be integrated into urban environments >> [music] >> as cities today face major challenges such as climate change, resource depletion, and social inequality. The system works in a closed loop where resources like water and nutrients [music] are continuously reused. The project is implemented in underutilized gray spaces between buildings B2 [music] to B7 where small garden units are created. These include movable boxes, recycled [music] raised beds, vertical wall planters, and cracky hydroponic systems.
Each system [music] is designed to maximize sunlight exposure and optimize growing conditions for different crops.
Solar panels provide clean energy ensuring carbon neutral and reliable operations. We create a solar [music] buffer by generating a bit more energy than our daily needs to ensure that the essential systems such [music] as the La Bottega refrigerators and localized irrigation pumps will perform normally on cloudy days [music] or during low sunlight periods.
Maintaining this surplus Radix on Cosme remains carbon neutral and weather resilient throughout the year. A variety of crops are selected based on adaptability and seasonal suitability.
These include tomatoes, >> [music] >> eggplant, Swiss chard, radishes, carrots, mustard greens, lettuce, kale, [music] parsley, and onions. Each crop is assigned to the most suitable growing system depending on its root structure [music] and nutrient needs. The shaded zone behind building B2 is turned into a [music] mushroom cultivation area by using recycled timber shelves and shade cloth.
Humidity is maintained [music] by drip irrigation using harvested rainwater.
Locally available organic waste such as spent [music] coffee grounds, shredded cardboard, and untreated sawdust serves as the substrate [music] for mushrooms. The cracky hydroponic system is used as a soilless growing technique that requires [music] minimal maintenance.
Plants grow in nutrient-rich water solutions [music] without the need for electricity or pumps.
This method helps demonstrate efficient water and space use in urban [music] farming. Rainwater is collected and reused while bokashi composting [music] converts organic waste into nutrient-rich fertilizer. The project becomes financially sustainable within [music] 3 years. Residents actively participate creating jobs, strengthening social connections, [music] and improving mental well-being.
The project also acts as an educational platform where people learn practical skills [music] like farming and composting.
In conclusion, Radix on [music] Cosme shows how urban spaces can become sustainable systems that combine food production, environmental [music] care, and social value.
