Oxytocin is usually linked to bonding and trust, [music] but researchers at Michigan State University found it may play a surprising role in [music] heart repair. In zebrafish, animals famous for regenerating organs, a heart injury triggers a surge [music] of oxytocin from the brain, and that hormone travels to the heart's outer layer, the epicardium, where something remarkable happens. Mature cells [music] begin to rewind into stem-like progenitor cells, cells that can grow into new [music] beating heart muscle.

When exposed to oxytocin, they multiplied and reprogrammed into repair cells more effectively than with any other molecule tested. Researchers [music] found this seems to happen through the TGF-beta signaling pathway, acting almost like a bridge between the oxytocin signal [music] and the cells' internal genetic software. But here's the part that made sci- entists pay attention. When researchers blocked oxytocin signaling in zebrafish, heart [music] healing slowed dramatically, epicardial activation weakened, and repair was delayed.
