The New Madrid earthquakes of 1811-1812 demonstrate that massive earthquakes can occur far from tectonic plate boundaries, caused by ancient geological faults (a 750 million-year-old scar in the Earth's crust) that remain seismically active, as evidenced by the Mississippi River running backwards, Reelfoot Lake appearing overnight, and ground fissures that persist today.

The Day the Mississippi River Ran Backwards追加:
In December 1811, the Mississippi River ran backwards.
A lake appeared in Tennessee overnight.
It's still there.
And the ground across three states erupted in fountains of sand and water.
These were the New Madrid earthquakes.
Four massive shocks over two months felt across half of North America.
The epicenter was in Missouri, a thousand miles from the nearest plate boundary.
On February 7th, a quake created a temporary dam across the river.
The Mississippi ran backwards. Boats drifting south were suddenly pushed north. Waterfalls appeared where the water had been flat. Islands vanished.
Then the dam broke and the river crashed back.
Across the region, the ground split open and geysers of black sand shot into the air.
The craters they left are still visible in aerial photographs today.
Why does this happen here?
This is the middle of a stable tectonic plate. No subduction, no boundary.
A 750 million year-old scar in the Earth's crust, still alive.
Reelfoot Lake is still there.
The USGS puts a 7 to 10% chance of a repeat within 50 years.
