Artificial reefs can be scientifically engineered to restore marine ecosystems by mimicking natural reef structures, supporting fish species restoration (such as snapper, flathead, and whiting), and promoting native oyster reef recovery through integrated oyster shell components, providing dual benefits of fisheries productivity and environmental restoration.

Sixty artificial reefs to be sunk off Kangaroo Island to restore ecosystemAdded:
We're here in the dockyard in Largs North where two artificial reefs set to be established in Gulf St Vincent. 50 of these are set to be put in the water.
These reefs have been engineered using science to to basically optimize their environmental impact.
Uh we've designed them based on nature.
So lots of ledges integrated with coral.
We've really worked on what's going to fit the environment, what's going to be best for the environment. So these ones here are are sort of you can see here the fish temple. They're a low profile design.
Sort of targeted towards your demersal species like snapper. So really helping with snapper restoration. All other species such as flathead, whiting will also really inhabit these areas. One of the key things we've done is integrated the oyster shell into the shells and that will help with the restoration of of native oyster reefs as well. So you're getting a double benefit here.
Not only are you getting a fisheries productivity tool, you're also getting an environmental asset which is going to help restore natural environment.
