FIRST ALERT WEATHER DAY: More storms will develop today and Memorial Day, impacting your plans!Added:
Atlanta News First Plus starts now with a First Alert Weather Day.
>> Hey there everybody. I'm First Alert meteorologist Rodney Harris. Hope you're enjoying your weekend, your holiday weekend across North Georgia. Uh this what you see on the right hand side of your screen, that's fairly yucky.
Unfortunately, that'll be the story for the rest of the morning. What little of the morning we have left. Cloudy skies, uh, mist there, a little bit of drizzle, that's going to be the story. So, if you have any plans, the good news is you can actually keep your plans through at least lunch because I'm not forecasting any real rain. So, anything you need to do today that requires you being outdoors, now it's a really good time to do that. And then, uh, things will change later on this afternoon like what we've seen over the past several days.
So, here's a look at what you can expect. Uh want to show you first alert radar because that is uh what we are going to be tracking for later on today.
So right now you can see all the showers and storms are mostly in uh Alabama. A few showers in northeast Georgia for Raven County down toward Habersonson County. Metro Atlanta mostly dry. So here's my forecast model for today.
We're going to keep it mostly dry this morning again, but right after lunch like yesterday, we will have some popup storms initially and then that coverage will increase closer to 3, four, 5, 6:00 this evening. So, uh it's not going to be a complete wash out. Everybody won't get wet, but those scattered storms will be out there. So, definitely have an umbrella if you were headed out this afternoon or evening. Um if you want, just stay indoors. I'd recommend just kind of counseling your plans because you're probably going to get wet at some point. But if you are going to get out and about, just make sure and have our first alert weather app download it because it'll let you know when there's rain headed towards your area in advance so it doesn't catch you off guard. And that first alert weather app will also let you know when there's lightning in your area. And we got the Atlanta Jazz Festival again this afternoon. That'll be super important for those of you out there at Pete Mount Park or if you are out there uh anywhere outdoors across metro Atlanta. we will have the potential for uh some lightning this afternoon and evening. So, be mindful of that. The other threat that we'll see is some street flooding. Again, we had a lot of rain that fell in East Cobb County, West Fulton County, west north Fulton County, uh basically east of Marietta yesterday. We can never really know exactly where that flooding will set up. But the potential will be there again with any of these storms because there's so much moisture in the air. So, uh these storms are spitting out a lot of rain per hour, which is why you're seeing that street flooding. You can see those showers and storms are going to continue through the night. Looks like it'll start setting up more toward East Georgia, Athens to Gainesville to the mountains as we get later into the night around 9:00. After sunset, it'll mostly go away, but there will be some stray showers left over tonight going into Monday morning. So, if you have to get to work super early on Monday, I know it's a holiday tomorrow, but for those of you who do have to get to work, I'm not forecasting anything widespread early, but a few showers will be possible out there. Again, that's early on Monday morning. So for today, if you see a storm, again, lightning will be possible. There's also the risk of street flooding, and the risk of severe weather is fairly low, but we did get a severe thunderstorm warning yesterday.
So, it's not impossible that a storm or two produces winds that get up to 60 mph. A 60 mile per hour wind is enough to produce some damage. So, there may be a severe thunderstorm warning or two out there. Again, that risk is low. I think most of these storms will just produce rain and lightning, but can't rule out a stray severe storm, uh, especially later on this evening. So, this forecast is very straightforward. We're going to keep daily rain chances in your forecast all of next week. Uh the storms will peak in the late afternoon and evening.
This is basically summertime. Uh in the south, highs are going to stay in the 80s. It's going to stay warm and muggy.
So, that's basically your forecast.
There's not really much of a change. Uh there may be some days where we'll see less storms than others, but there will at least be a chance of storms out there every single day through next week. So, be mindful of that. I think the morning and night will be the better time of day with the late afternoon and evening being the time of day where those storms uh will be more likely. So that's it for today. We hope that you have a good uh Sunday, a good Memorial Day. Again, we want to encourage you to download our first alert weather app because in this type of a pattern like a lot of times we'll get like a front that'll move in and so everybody will get the rain at once. It's easy to forecast where it'll be, but we are in a pattern where those storms could pop up just about anywhere.
So, it is super important that you uh if you can have that app because it'll let you know when rain is headed toward your area in advance and it'll give you a separate alarm if there's lightning in your area and if necessary it'll let you know the moment that there is a weather alert. So, we'll keep you up to date on any activity today in the First Lit Weather app. In the meantime, we have the birthday girl l first Megan Packer with a check of your headlines for today.
>> Good morning, Rodney. Thank you so much.
as we look outside over downtown Atlanta. Yes, another dreary day for this long holiday weekend. Hope you've been able to uh enjoy it though. So, thanks so much for checking in with us here. I'm Megan Packer. Our thanks to Rodney for bringing us the forecast. We do have a lot to talk about with your news headlines. So, let's jump right into it. Here's a check of what we are tracking for you on this Sunday morning, including an update about a barricaded situation in Winder. This all was unfolding last night. We'll show you the map of where this was happening. There was a standoff that started after 9 last night um in the box circle area of Winder. Winder PD and Barrow County Sheriff's deputies were out there responding to this hourslong standoff.
Deputies say Alexander Agopy barricaded himself in a town home community and did not come out peacefully until after midnight, but it did end peacefully and that suspect now faces aggravated assault and terroristic threats charges.
Thousands of fish were found dead along 20 miles of the Chattahuchi River. So, here's what we know about this right now. Riverkeepers think Wednesday night's flash floods overwhelmed the sewer system and it sent pollution into the river, causing oxygen levels to drop, which caused the fish to suffocate. And now you are urged to avoid the river between Peach Tree Creek and West Point Lake while it's cleaned up and monitored. Uh but again, this was earlier this week when we had that heavy rainfall and they're saying that this just killed thousands of fish along this 20 mile stretch of the Chattahuchi River. So we will keep you posted as we stay in touch with the river keeper to learn more about that. There are several events happening on this Memorial Day weekend honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice for the United States. We were out this morning in Cherokee County at the Georgia National Cemetery with volunteers from the Travis Manion Foundation as they placed commemorative tokens on headstones of fallen service members. It is meant to show their families that their loved ones are not forgotten. People also gathered at the Marietta National Military Cemetery this weekend. They took part in the National Memorial Day Association of Georgia's annual event.
US flags were placed on every veteran's grave by Brownie, Girl, Cub, and Boy Scouts of America. And they went to all 18,000 headstones in the cemetery.
Important to teach that next generation of young people what this Memorial Day weekend is really all about. Police are trying to get to the bottom of a shooting in Buckhead that happened in the middle of a Saturday afternoon.
Officers responded to the Lennox Place Apartments on Lennox Road just after 1:00 yesterday. They found a 22-year-old man shot inside a car. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Police have not announced any suspects or arrests.
That is a check of some of the day's headlines. We will continue to update you all day long on headlines in the Atlanta News First app. Come back and join our team tonight as well for the very latest. I'm Megan Packer for First Alert Meteorologist Rodney Harrison, the entire news team here. Thanks so much for joining us. As always, enjoy your day, stay dry, and we will see you soon.
Thank you. Bye-bye.
