What Really Happens to Your Stuff After an EMP — and the 5 Things That Still Function
Added:You flip the switch, nothing. The refrigerator goes quiet in the next room. Your phone is a black mirror in your hand, and here is the part nobody tells you. Most of what you own is already gone. But a small handful of things in your house will keep working exactly the way they always have, and the line between the two is far simpler than the men who sell you gadgets ever wanted you to know. We have been living on the working side of that line for more than 200 years, not because we saw this coming, because we never plugged in to begin with. And the knowledge of what keeps running when the power dies survived with us quietly while the rest of the country forgot it. Stay with me, because near the end I am going to show you a trick that comes straight out of a federal report published in 2008, and it uses a metal container you very likely already own. It works for the house you live in right now. You do not need to build anything new. I remember a late winter morning in Geauga County, Ohio, when the frost had crawled up the inside of the kitchen window in feathers, and my grandfather was turning the crank on a little grain mill bolted to the table.
No hum, no cord, just the soft grinding sound and his breath in the cold air.
I did not understand then that I was watching the future. Let me tell you what actually happens. Most folks picture an EMP like a big magic wave that fries everything with a battery in it, melts your car, melts your flashlight, turns the whole world into a smoking heap. That is the movie version, and the movie version is why people either panic or laugh it off. The truth is stranger, and it is a lot more useful to you. An electromagnetic pulse is really three separate punches, one right after the other, and they do not all hit the same way. The first punch is incredibly fast. We are talking billionths of a second. It is a wall of energy that washes over everything at once. The second punch is slower and behaves a lot like a nearby lightning strike. The third punch is slow and long and rolling, more like what the sun does to us during a big solar storm. Now, here is the thing that changes everything, and it is the first secret most people never hear. That energy does not care about your gadget. It cares about the wire attached to your gadget.
Electricity has to be gathered um a pulse in the air is just a pulse in the air until it finds a piece of metal long enough to catch it uh the way a sail catches wind. The longer the wire, the more of that energy it scoops up and funnels down into whatever is on the other end. A long antenna, a long power cord, a phone line running out to the road, miles of power lines strung between poles across the whole county. So, the damage is not spread evenly. It pours into the things that are wired into something big, and it mostly skips the things that stand alone. Think about what that means for a second. Your neighbor's whole-house smart system, tied into the grid, tied into the internet, tied into 100 ft of wiring in the walls, that is a catcher's mitt for the pulse. But a small thing sitting by itself with only an inch or two of wire inside it has almost nothing to gather the energy with. It is too small to catch much of the wave at all.
That is not my opinion. That is physics that has been measured, and I will get to who measured it. But it raises the real question, the one that should be keeping you up at night. If the danger is the wire, and the biggest wires in America are the power lines, then what is actually most likely to die? Not your stuff first, the grid first.
And this is where I need you to really listen, because this is the part the whole comfortable modern world is built on top of, and almost nobody looks at it. The electrical grid is the largest antenna human beings have ever built.
Hundreds of thousands of miles of wire strung up in the open air, connected to giant transformers. Those big transformers at the substations are the heart of the whole thing. They take the high voltage screaming across the long lines and step it down so it can safely reach your house. And that slow third punch I told you about, the long rolling one, that is the punch that goes after them. It pushes a huge surge of current down all those miles of line all at once, and it slams into the transformers. Here is the cruel part.
Those big transformers are not sitting in a warehouse waiting for you. Many of them are custom built. Some are so large they have to move on special rail cars.
A lot of them are not even made in this country anymore. On a normal day, replacing one can take many months, sometimes more than a year.
Now imagine hundreds of them dead at the same moment and the factories that build them without power either. So the lights do not come back on in a few days. The story of the blackout is not a weekend.
It could be a season. It could be longer. And I want you to notice something.
You had no say in any of that.
You did not choose to hang your life on the most fragile, most exposed machine ever built. That choice was made for you, a little at a time, over about a hundred years, by people who profited every single month you stayed dependent on it. We will come back to those people. Because the story of how a whole nation got talked into standing on one leg is not an accident. But first, I promised you the things that still work.
And I'm going to keep that promise.
Let me give you the first one, and it is the one that made my grandfather smile that frozen morning without him even knowing why. Anything purely mechanical does not even notice an EMP. There is nothing to catch the pulse. There are no circuits to burn. A hand tool is just shaped metal and wood. A wind-up clock keeps its time. Uh a treadle sewing machine, the kind my grandmother pumped with her foot for 40 years, will sew a straight seam the morning after the grid dies just like it did the morning before. A hand-crank grain mill turns wheat into flour. A cast-iron water pump pulls water up out of the ground with nothing but your arm and a leather washer. We did not keep these things because we were waiting for doomsday. We kept them because a tool that depends on nothing can never be taken from you.
That was the whole idea. A plain life is a life that keeps working when the fancy life stops. So, that is your first survivor. Muscle and metal and gravity.
Simple. But, here is where it gets interesting and where most people are dead wrong because they will tell you that if it has a battery or a chip in it, it is toast. And that is simply not true. Which brings me to the second thing that still works and this one is going to surprise you. Most small electronics survive.
I know.
That sounds backwards. But, go back to what I told you about the wire being the antenna.
A little handheld radio, a flashlight, a small battery, a solar phone charger sitting in a drawer. These things are physically tiny. The wiring inside them is short. They are not plugged into anything, not tied to the grid, not connected to miles of line. There is almost nothing there for the pulse to grab onto. This got tested and I mean really tested, not guessed at. Back in the early 2000s, there was a federal commission put together to study exactly this threat. Plain dry government name.
Something to the tune of the Commission to Assess the Threat to the United States from Electromagnetic Pulse. They ran real experiments. They put actual equipment into chambers and hit it with pulses that matched what a real event would do. And they published what they found with the big public report coming out in 2008. One of the things they looked at hard was automobiles because everybody assumes every car in America drops dead at once. So, they took a whole batch of cars and trucks running and parked, and they exposed them to the pulse. Most of them just kept running.
Some of the running engines hiccuped, a few stalled and needed to be restarted, a small number had some minor trouble, but the picture of every car on the highway coasting to a dead stop forever, that did not happen in the testing. The cars were, again, too small to catch a fatal dose, and a lot of the sensitive parts were tucked inside metal engine bays that shielded them without anyone planning it that way. Now, newer cars packed with more electronics are more vulnerable than older ones, and that matters, and I will come back to it, but the point stands. The blanket idea that everything with a chip is instantly dead is not what the real testing showed. So, why have you heard the opposite your whole life? Ask yourself who benefits when you believe your only hope is to buy something brand new and expensive.
That is your third survivor, by the way.
Vehicles, especially the simpler ones, and here is the reason the old simple ones win. An older engine, the kind with a mechanical setup and no computer deciding when to fire the spark, can run on almost nothing electrical at all. A basic diesel is the champion of this. A simple diesel engine does not even need an electrical spark to keep running once it is going. It runs on compression and heat and fuel. Take away every chip in the county and a mechanical diesel just keeps chugging. We see this every day in our world. The equipment that runs our shops and our fields, a lot of it is built around simple engines and hydraulics and air pressure, not delicate electronics. Not because we planned for a pulse, because simple things break less and can be fixed by hand. Turns out the thing that makes a machine repairable is the same thing that makes it survive the pulse, independence from the fragile stuff. You feeling the pattern yet? The more a thing leans on the big system, the more it dies with the big system. The more a thing stands on its own, the more it lives. And that is not a lesson you can get from a survival store or a YouTube thumbnail, but it is exactly the kind of thing I have spent years putting together in a plain, practical guide you can hold in your hands.

And uh this is where I get to make good on the trick I promised you, the one you can do this very weekend in the house you already own with something that is probably in your garage right now. But before I do, I need you to hear who did this to you, because it will change how you use what I am about to give you.
For most of human history, a family carried its own power. Your arm was the power.
The wind was the power. The falling water at the mill was the power. The wood in your stove was the power. You owned it. It could not be shut off from a control room in another state. Then, over roughly the last 100 years, that changed, and it did not change by accident. Power got moved off your property and into a system you rent access to month after month forever.
Light, heat, cooking, cooling, water, communication, every single one of them got quietly rewired to run through a meter that somebody else controls.
Understand, I am not telling you a villain in a dark room banned self-reliance.
I am telling you something more honest and more uncomfortable.
A whole industry grew up whose profit depends on you never being able to provide for yourself.
Every convenience they sold you came with a hidden cord attached and the cord runs back to them. The more helpless you are without them, the better their year looks. We watched this happen from the outside, the way you watch a flood rise from up on a hill. Our people were mocked for it, for turning down the grid, for keeping the hand pump and the wood stove and the horse. And here we are and it turns out we were simply the ones who never let go of the rope. So, when I tell you the fourth survivor is anything you shield, understand that shielding is really just you taking back a little piece of that independence.
You are building yourself one small corner of the world that no pulse and no control room can reach. Here is how it works and it is old and it is beautiful in how simple it is. A closed metal box will stop the pulse from reaching what is inside it. The energy runs around the outside of the metal skin and never gets to the middle.
This is a real known effect discovered way back in the 1800s. Any complete metal enclosure does it. Your microwave oven has a weaker version of this built into the door, which is why the waves stay inside while it is running. Now, here is the weekend project and I promise you it does not need a permit, it does not need a contractor, and it does not need a single new tool. Take a metal trash can.
The plain galvanized steel kind with a snug metal lid, the kind that has sat in American garages for 100 years. Line the inside with a layer of cardboard.
Cardboard on the bottom, cardboard up the walls. An old cardboard box broken down flat works fine. The reason for the cardboard is simple. You do not want the things you are protecting to touch the bare metal directly. So, you make a soft insulating nest inside. Then, you put your spares in there. A backup radio, a spare flashlight, an extra phone, spare batteries, a small solar charger, whatever small electronics you would weep to lose. Wrap each one in a plastic bag or cloth so it is not touching metal and set it in the can. Then, put the lid on tight so the metal lid touches the metal rim all the way around. That contact matters more than almost anything. The seam is the weak point, so you want metal kissing metal all the way around the top. If the fit is loose, run a strip of aluminum tape around the seam and you have closed the gap. That is it.
That is a Faraday cage.
It has a fancy name, but it is a metal can with a lid. Costs you nothing if the can is already out there holding leaves.
Now, I know what you are thinking because I thought it too the first time somebody explained this to me and I was sure they'd left something out. You are thinking, do I not have to ground it? Do I not have to run a wire from the can down into the earth? Hold that thought because the answer to it is the whole secret and it is the finale I promised you. But first, let me give you the fifth survivor so you have the full set.
The fifth thing that still works is anything already cut off from the grid.
Not just small, not just shielded, cut off, standing alone by design. A well with a hand pump on it, a wood stove, a rain barrel and a gravity fed line, a root cellar keeping food cold with nothing but dirt and depth, a springhouse, the little stone building our people built right over a cold spring so the running water keeps the milk and the butter cool in summer. None of these things asked the grid for permission to work. They were never connected in the first place, so they have nothing to lose. And this is the real lesson underneath all five survivors. It was never really about the pulse. The pulse just reveals what was already true. The things that depend on the big fragile system die with the big fragile system. The things that stand on their own keep standing. We did not arrange our lives around a weapon or a solar storm. We arranged them around a much older idea that a family should be able to feed itself, warm itself, and water itself without asking anyone. The pulse is just the moment when that old idea suddenly looks like genius instead of stubbornness. So, look around the house you already own with new eyes.
You are not helpless. You have survivors in there right now. The hand tools in the basement, the old bicycle in the shed, maybe an old truck, a wood stove or a fireplace you stopped using, a can in the garage. Every one of those is a piece of the working side of the line, and you already own them. You do not have to become us. You just have to stop throwing the old things away. Now, >> [clears throat] >> let me answer the grounding question because this is the part that even a lot of the survival crowd gets wrong, and it is the cleanest, most surprising thing I can hand you. You do not need to ground it. Everybody thinks you do. You will hear it over and over that a Faraday cage is worthless unless you drive a copper rod into the dirt and run a wire to your metal can. People have talked themselves out of protecting a single thing because they got scared they would do the grounding wrong. Here is the truth. The shielding does not come from the ground. It comes from the metal skin itself. The energy travels around the outside surface of the metal and cancels itself out on the way around. It never enters the hollow middle. That happens whether the can is sitting on the dirt, sitting on your concrete floor, or hanging from a rope in the barn. The inside stays quiet either way. Grounding a cage matters for other jobs, like bleeding off a steady static charge in certain equipment. But, for the job you care about, protecting your spare radio from the pulse, a sealed metal can with a lid on tight does the whole thing all by itself. Bare metal skin, good seam, contents not touching the metal, done.
And I want you to sit with where that knowledge really comes from because it is not from a survival store and it is not from a magazine trying to sell you a $1,500 shielded bag. The core of it is right there in that Federal Commission's own testing from the early 2000s, in the plain physics of shielded enclosures that goes back to the 1800s, and honestly in the way our people have always lived, which is to keep the important things simple and separate and under your own roof. Think about the beauty of that. The most advanced threat anyone can dream up, a pulse that takes down the largest machine mankind ever built, and the thing that defeats it in your own home is a metal can that costs less than a decent dinner. No cord, no monthly bill, no control room, no permission. That is the whole trade laid bare. They spent 100 years convincing you that safety was something you rent, something complicated, something only they can provide. And the actual answer is 100 years old, dirt simple, and yours to build on a Saturday afternoon. Let me tell you how I would set mine up so you have a picture. I would keep two cans.
One is my main store, spare radio, spare flashlights, a small solar panel that folds up, a good stock of batteries in their packaging, and a simple wristwatch that winds by hand. The second can is smaller and it holds the things I might want to actually check on now and then, so I am not breaking the seal on the big one every time I open a can, I remember to seal it tight again when I am done because a Faraday cage with the lid off is just a trash can. I would keep the can somewhere dry, up off a damp floor on a wood pallet or a couple of 2 by 4's because the pulse is not the only thing that kills electronics. Moisture and rust do it slower and just as surely and I would keep one thing outside the can entirely because you want at least one working radio the moment it happens. A small battery radio in a drawer will very likely survive on its own being tiny and unconnected. The stuff in the can is your backup, your insurance, your second and third chance. Now let me widen this back out because I do not want you to walk away thinking the answer is just to hide some gadgets in a can and go back to renting your whole life from the meter. The can protects your electronics.
But the deeper protection, the one our people have leaned on for generations, is to need fewer of those electronics in the first place. Every function you can move off the grid and onto muscle, wood, water, or a simple engine is a function that can never be shut off. A hand pump does not need a can because it does not need protecting. It already lives on the working side of the line. So think in layers. The outer layer is a plain life, the things that stand alone. Water you can reach by hand, heat you can make from wood, food you can keep cold in the ground. That layer does not care about the pulse at all. The inner layer is your shielded electronics for the conveniences you still want, radio and light and communication, tucked safe in the can. And the last layer is simply knowing how all of it works, which is the layer they can never take from you and the one I'm trying to hand you right now. I think about my grandfather and that grain mill more than I used to. Ah, [sighs] he was not afraid of anything when he turned that crank. He did not worry about a control room in another state. He did not worry about a bill. He did not worry about a pulse he had never heard of. His breakfast did not depend on any of it. That was not poverty. That was freedom. And it looked like an old man in a cold kitchen grinding wheat by hand and humming to himself. The rest of the country traded that feeling away one convenience at a time, and most folks never even noticed the trade happening.
They just woke up one day standing on one leg on top of the most fragile machine ever built, and they called it progress. You do not have to make that trade all the way back, but you can take a piece of it back this weekend. You can walk out to the garage, find that metal can, line it with cardboard, and give yourself one small corner of the world that no pulse and no company and no distance switch can reach. Here is what I really want you to feel as we finish.
You did not lose the ability to stand on your own. It was quietly carried off while you were busy trusting a system that was built to keep you paying, and today you just picked a piece of it back up off the ground. If you are the kind of person who does not like being kept helpless, who would rather understand a thing than rent it, then you already belong with the folks watching this.
