India has commissioned a demonstration network using White Rabbit precision timing technology (originally developed at CERN for the Large Hadron Collider) to replace foreign GPS-based timing systems for its financial markets, thereby reducing dependence on US-controlled satellite infrastructure and enhancing economic sovereignty. This White Rabbit technology, which provides sub-nanosecond accuracy down to picoseconds, was originally designed to synchronize equipment in particle accelerators where particles circulate over 11,000 times per second. The system, developed through collaboration between the Department of Consumer Affairs, CSIR National Physical Laboratory, and ISRO, distributes Indian Standard Time traceable to the national timekeeping authority UTC NPLI. The demonstration network was verified with CSIR, NPL, ISRO, SEBI, the National Stock Exchange, and BSNL, transmitting secure time signals between Bengaluru and Chennai facilities. This initiative is part of India's broader One Nation One Time project, which aims to reduce foreign dependence on timing sources and establish the country among global leaders in precision time dissemination. The technology is being deployed across banking, telecommunications, power grids, transportation, and digital governance systems, where precise timestamps are crucial for trade sequencing, transaction records, and preventing manipulation of financial markets.
