This video captures the irony of modern conservation, where we must use artificial fires to fix the ecological damage caused by our own infrastructure. It shows that once we break a natural system, we are forever responsible for its manual survival.

Where Roads Die – Hunting Smoke and Oranges in the EvergladesAdded:
This weekend we're going to the Everglades, but with a twist, something different than we usually do. So, it's going to be Rain, Lenny, and a guest, and me.
Hello.
Hey, are you all right? Yeah, we're out of gas. All right, hold on.
Okay.
Oh.
It's your lucky night.
Okay.
I just got gas.
Let me see.
Old car.
Oh, that car passed us everything but the pump.
I'm going to die. I think it's stuck in an angle. That could be.
All right, yeah.
Yeah, you know you know your friends when you you help someone move, you know who your friends are.
Watch. Let me get out of here, too.
Okay.
Oh, [ __ ] I'm spending the night at Miami Fruit, on their farm, of course. You've seen this place in my past videos. It's rad.
We swim, we ride, and of course I've got all my emergency equipment and supplies.
And so, let's go.
There are major fires in the Everglades today, and what we're going to do is we're going to try to get as close as possible, but it is hell of a challenge to do this.
Got you. And that's controlled burn, so what does that mean?
I could So, basically, because all of this used to be under water, whenever wildfires would happen, like it was just a natural part of the the process. But, whenever we, you know, dammed up Lake Okeechobee and then put canals all over the place, it basically dried the land out, we created a situation where wildfires fires goes get out of control.
So, now we have to do prescribed burns.
It promotes new growth, but the process is you have to burn the whole You got to burn the area so that it kills all the old growth and lets the new growth uh come. Otherwise, it smothers itself.
We're trying to go west on Jane Scenic. Yeah, you ain't going to be able to make it back out here today.
Even if the park is open, you ain't going to be able to get through it.
Uh It is now.
Hey, next few miles, don't look back.
Just go.
This is the Fakahatchee Hilton, and it's from a bygone era when people used to come out here and stay out here.
Oh, [ __ ] He lives out here. We should keep going.
So, we don't have to stop, cuz he's going to make us stop. Oh, [ __ ] that.
Bro, this is awesome. This is like the old Jeep roads I used to do with my dad.
You almost [ __ ] plowed him, dude.
>> it was a stick.
He's mad. Yeah, he's pissed.
He's He's not used to seeing people back there.
>> No.
No, I mean, we're a threat coming up rolling four deep.
We're getting ticks and all that stuff that was not >> No, not ticks.
Ay, ay, ay.
>> [laughter] >> He doesn't like my bike. It's too colorful. Yeah.
Lucas, am I safe to come out here? I mean, >> That's where he is.
>> You're at his 10:00. So, yeah, relatively.
Yeah, yeah, he's not threatened. What's that guy?
Look at that. He's not going to do it.
Lucas, that thing can turn its head in the blink of a second.
>> Yes.
They are going They are going, man.
How did you make your way through here?
I went right through there.
Yeah, don't worry about it. Yo, by the way, respect.
You didn't yield.
He did not move.
Beautiful.
Hey, AN ORANGE. OH, LUCAS.
WHOA.
HERE, I'll I'll bend it down for you and you can pick them. All right, ready.
Are they sweet?
Well, let's see. All right, just tell me, guys. Will it be better? No.
I mean, it will when we get home.
>> bike You know the bike to us.
Oh, my god. Today is Today is a bike This is a bike ride. It's not even riding. You risk in the middle of nowhere all all your bike all your technician. Don't worry, we don't risk nothing.
Matt's coming.
Oh, then everything will be fine.
>> You risk everything.
Well, that's true.
>> What are we risking? A broken leg out here? A broken leg? Yeah, broken leg.
What, you think an alligator's going to bite our leg off or something? Just hit a a root like this, broken leg.
Rain, you didn't show me stuff like this yesterday. I asked you how it would be.
Yeah, it's not funny. It's not funny.
It's not funny.
It's kind of funny.
You want one, Martin?
Lucas. Yes, sir. You said you were a hunter-gatherer last night. Oh, yeah.
I'm the [ __ ] gatherer.
Mhm.
Rain, [snorts] you didn't show me stuff like this yesterday. I asked you how it would be.
>> [laughter] >> Martin, dude, you can turn around and ride smooth gravel all you want.
Did you record the pileup?
Yeah.
[ __ ] you.
Good camera man. You never miss a shot.
Okay, we're almost We're like halfway through.
Lucas, this [ __ ] blows dick. Right now, it does.
Cuz that's the thing about life.
It can ALWAYS GET WORSE.
>> [laughter] >> WE'RE LIKE HALFWAY THROUGH.
NO, IT'S NOT FUNNY. It's maybe like 2 hours on foot to get out of here.
No, it's not. It's reality.
You don't know what you're doing.
Just no forward thinking. Zero.
Well, a little bit. No, zero.
>> Just not very good forward thinking.
>> No, zero. No, no, no forward thinking.
That's jungle right here. You need You need tools for that. True. Yeah.
What do you think? Can I make it back alone? I think you can, Martin. You just go back the same way you came. Just take your time and watch the alligator alone.
Yeah. Yeah, well, I'll be waiting for you.
>> [laughter] >> That was mean, Leo. No, I was serious.
>> [laughter] >> Dude, don't put sugar on me. I'm going to get bee stung. All right, guys. So, question is What what what's the benefit of this [ __ ] An hour? Yeah, [ __ ] this [ __ ] So, do we go back an hour and retrace our steps?
>> So, they're [ __ ] tail between their legs.
>> Yeah, yeah, yeah.
No, no, no. Or do we press on and see how much worse it gets for like 20 minutes and then >> even to touch on through.
Maybe we should leave our bikes.
Good idea. Leave your food also.
And especially leave drinks and cell phones. Leave it here. Don't take it with you. I like your thinking, Martin.
Now you're being optimistic.
But that is not bike riding anymore, right? Hey, man. You wanted to go to Florida, man.
Let's not go that So, Rain saying that we're like halfway through right now.
So, yeah. Um All right. So, at this point, um Martin's turning back.
And we are forging north.
>> Also turning back. Should we turn back?
Hell no. No.
>> [music] [screaming] >> It's all smooth sailing from here.
When people say you cannot do something, we cannot do something, it makes me just want to double down and go that much harder. In this case, >> [music] >> keep heading north. So, we got to send it. Like, we got to [ __ ] send it.
If we're going to make it before sundown. I'm going to >> So, are we are we committing to the bit or are we turning around?
Committing to the bit, baby.
It's the only way.
All right, Lucas. You lead the way as fast as you can, baby.
>> Yes, sir.
Oranges.
That's so cool.
So, yeah.
Fantastic, Lucas. Fantastic. Good job.
Great line. Cutting through it, man.
Really great line.
I hope you're filming that.
Oh, for heaven's sakes.
There's any idiot who sucks at this.
Woah. Oh, wait.
Oh, okay.
Poor bottom here.
Do we go this way or that way?
This is the main trail. Okay.
It's nearly 5 mi It's 5 mi.
Okay. Well, 5 mi of hiking at 1 mi an hour is 5 hours.
Yeah, but um >> Like I said, I'm down to [ __ ] send it, but we got to we have to take our speed really seriously.
>> have to send it, yeah. Yeah. All right.
Like, if we can do 2 or 3 mi an hour, that's a whole different story. Yeah. I just need to pause right here. Did you ever imagine the day when Rain and I would be talking about sending it at 2 to 3 mi per hour?
Good job, Leo. Thanks, man. I'm trying my hardest out here. Yeah, you're doing great.
I must say, we are extremely lucky that it is dry season and so we have this riverbed that we're going on right now.
Um not a lot of water, as you can see.
Woah. Hoisting.
Is he snapping you? Yeah.
What?
Lucas almost got eaten.
You know what I got to wonder is when the last time it was that somebody actually took this trail. [music] I mean, if you're going to take it to get to it, you'd have to either take a car or bike unless you're some ultra marathoner, I guess.
Then you have to not come in here alone.
I don't know.
It's like a constant battle deciding between the riverbed, which now [music] is screwed, or this. This is kind of screwed, too, but oh, well.
Yeah, see, um we're switching from the path right now to this nice riverbed because path got too gnarly. Oh, nice riverbed.
It really sucks, guys. Like, I'm trying not to think about it, but like my the next week of my life is going to suck so much.
Let me see your turn on camera.
You need to unlock your iPhone first.
It's really bad, dude.
Uh it's like stuck to everything.
I can't even get it off my jersey.
Adorned.
Uh hanging out with the wrong people.
Targeted ketogenesis here.
Going out of keto to stay with you guys and survive this and get the heck out of this woods before sundown.
>> [sighs] >> There's this phenomenon, the buzz of survival.
You're committed.
My hope is that this gets better condition on the approach to Alligator Alley, but I don't know.
>> [music] [music] >> Oranges.
Oh, more oranges.
>> [music] >> Yo.
Starburst.
>> [music] [music] >> Oh, [ __ ] I'm going to I'm going to go that way.
Yeah, we're debating whether to go north to Alligator Alley >> to go that way. or to go west to 29.
>> to go that way anyhow. Yeah, and we might have a roadblock at the north side of 29. We will most likely have a roadblock at the at the north side. So, we should cut in behind them cuz we've already done all this work.
Let's try it.
Oh, [ __ ] That's lucky.
You know what, [music] though?
Okay.
Wow.
We've made it onto 29. 29, if you remember from the beginning, is that road that we were trying to get on that [music] the state police were blocking.
I'm looking for some water.
Nobody here.
>> [music] >> Thank you.
>> you guys doing, man? We're doing good.
>> Woah, what the [ __ ] What is What are you covered in? What is that?
Cockleburrs. Yeah.
>> Oh, [ __ ] You need some water, man? Look at you.
>> Yeah, my hair is [ __ ] >> [laughter] >> You're a lifesaver. Yeah. No worries, man. I got More for the road, dude? More for the road? We're going to hit a gas station in just a little bit. You sure?
But we're all out of water. Yeah.
Yeah, I'll take another one, please.
Yeah. Thank you.
Leo, you want red or No, I don't want anything else, sir.
Appreciate it.
Thanks, man.
I ripped all mine off. Look at him hitchhiking, man.
Yeah.
Dude, man. The sandburrs really just a burrs, yeah. You're not too bad. Okay.
The sand spurs you know cuz you did they get you every time you touch it. Oh. We we did have fun. Now that it's over.
>> [laughter] >> I got to shave my head when I get home.
Oh god, yeah. Have a good day, sir. Good one.
Okay, they're ordering Subway. But while they're ordering Subway, I am going to have, well, you guessed it.
Some sardines.
These are literally stuck together. Yes.
It It will be forced.
Ow.
Careful.
All right.
Well, we got on this road. And >> This thanks to Rain's navigation skills.
We're done. We're done. And And uh We're live. And I'm not riding with Lucas anymore. This is the last time you're going to see me in one of his videos.
>> that before.
>> [laughter] >> Just Just don't die.
Well, we're back on pavement. And yeah, it's easier, but I can't say that I'm happy to be out of the woods.
I miss the Everglades a lot. And I've told you in previous videos that [music] I don't come here enough. And we don't as a society. We're not in touch with nature the way that we need [music] to be. Completely isolated from it. And so we have all these things that we've done to the Everglades. And I wish that we would do less, and the Everglades would return to more of a habitat that it was when my dad and I used to camp here in the '80s.
So, >> [music] >> that's a wrap.
I'm going to miss you.
See you soon.
>> [music] >> What else is out there?
