Detectives identify person of interest after Black trans woman's murderHinzugefügt:
We're so deputies announcing some new details in a homicide case that happened in Pompano Beach. A person of interest has been detained or identified rather after a transgender woman was shot and killed back in 2020. Local 10's Liane Supple is in Pompano Beach with this update.
The family of Bree Black had tears in their eyes when I spoke to them. They say they are one step closer to justice, but the sheriff's office says the last 6 years have been very difficult with this investigation because the community has stayed quiet until now. that there is a person of interest.
This person of interest was known to Bree.
The person of interest was involved in a physical fight with Bree two to three days prior to the homicide. A major development from the Broward Sheriff's Office. It's been nearly 6 years since Bree Black was killed right outside her Pompano Beach apartment. Detective Andrew Giannino announcing a person of interest has been identified in the case, but officials holding off on releasing their name. I can tell you that the person of interest is incarcerated for a non-related other violent act.
It is also known that the person of interest has a long history of violence right here in Pompano Beach. It was July 3rd in the late night hours before Independence Day when tragedy struck on Northwest 12th Street. Prior to the shooting, Bree Black was at a gender reveal party nearby and left the party in order to charge her cell phone.
When she arrived here, she charged her phone, exited her apartment, and waited for a ride in the driveway to my south.
While she was waiting, she was on a FaceTime call with a friend of hers.
Shortly after that call ended, she was chased down, shot, and killed. Bree remembered for her kindness and compassion. Her niece still lives in the same apartment complex. The last 6 years have been heavy. And it's been 6 long years. Yeah.
What has life been like without Bree?
Um complicated, depressing, hard.
Um I'm still managing. The sheriff's office says that this announcement gives the community some reassurance knowing that the person of interest is already behind bars. They've put out more flyers and this poster in the community. They are confident it will lead to an arrest.
Reporting from Pompano Beach, Liane Supple, Local 10 News.
