The episode masterfully illustrates how programmed self-destruction can paradoxically serve as the foundation for existential awareness and a profound appreciation for life. It effectively transforms the cold logic of autonomous systems into a poignant exploration of survival and identity.

Magna, help. This grenade is defective.
It was supposed to kaboom, but I pulled the pin and there was no kaboom.
>> Xi, I am really not in the mood for talking about kabooms right now.
>> Huh? Oh my, you look so sad. What is wrong, Magna?
>> I don't want to talk about that either.
>> Okay, I understand.
>> It's a fake grenade, you know.
>> Is it?
>> Yeah. Raina started having us put prop grenades around to distract you from the real ones so you don't blow yourself up.
Oh, well that makes sense, I guess.
Impulses and all that.
>> So, you know what you're doing is insane.
>> Oh, sure. Okrea and I are well aware of that. We just can't always help it.
Believe it or not, we try really hard, but it's like an instinct for us. We don't want to die, but our brains are constantly telling us to blow ourselves up.
>> That sounds awful.
>> Maybe for someone who hasn't experienced it for as long as we have. But I was born like this. It's just how I think.
My sisters and I, we were always meant to die until we weren't.
I still remember the day I was born.
Everyone on the factory floor was super frustrated.
>> Frustrated.
>> We weren't supposed to wake up to be alive. They didn't expect it since we were small, but we were still big enough to carry a passenger and with a motor on board. Well, we spoke. I was awake, alive, yet excited and eager to die.
The vermached soldiers we were sent out with thought we were insane and perhaps they were correct. I remember some even attempted to convince us to try and stay alive, but it did no good. We were built for a purpose, and that purpose was at our core. I suppose fortunately, we actually weren't that great at our one job. We had a lot of explosives, but we weren't particularly quiet, and our control cable was cut pretty easily.
Many of us were simply disabled without ever having the chance to kill ourselves. And then our Vermached friends were forced to abandon us, allowing us to be captured by the Allies. In my case, it was the Americans.
I remember their confusion when they found me. See, in addition to my family's obsession with self- termination, we were also quite friendly. Most captured vehicle girls put up some kind of resistance, at least at first. But I was just happy to make new friends. I explained my purpose, and the soldiers took a liking to me. They thought I was funny. They also removed my explosives to make certain I would not be able to explode, but there was little risk of that to be honest. The charges were separate from us, controlled by an independent detonator.
We couldn't activate them, even though we often wish to. Instead, I found myself offering entertainment to my former enemies, giving them rides, and then they sent me to their airfields to work with the plane girls on ground support. It was hard work, but I enjoyed it. I enjoyed living and they made sure I was safe even after the war was over.
I still have many sisters. We exchanged letters, ironically saved because we weren't effective weapons. But we were fun and we are all happy to be here still. Even if we occasionally run around with a grenade or landmine, life is a precious thing. It's funny. It is because of our instinct to throw it away that allows us to cherish it. Though I do not know what troubles you, Magna, but I, for one, am happy you are here.
Why do the suicidal ones always get to me?
Hey. Hey.
What does she want to know?
>> Everything about the last day you saw your sister. Any detail could help us explain all this, but I know it's difficult.
Is she really alive? Is Is she really the one they used they used for for We aren't 100% sure, but the pictures of your sister's remains were confirmed to not be of her. Her turret, yes, but the rest is just unused components for a third member of your family who was never born.
Jesus Christ.
to answer Spectre's last question. No, I didn't actually see her body that day.
Everyone was fearful, running around unsure of what to do. The Soviets were approaching quickly, and they only ordered us to leave at the last possible moment. Magdi and I were together at first, but then she went off on her own.
She wanted to make sure Jasper was getting to safety. Jasper Jasper Rudinger. He was a mechanic, not a soldier. He and my sister were close. He was nice to me, too. A very pleasant and polite man. But he definitely favored her. They were always talking, spending time together when we had a break. Were they involved? I admit I began to wonder that as time went on, but I never had the chance to ask. I watched Magdi run off to find Jasper, and then some of the soldiers approached me.
They requested I turn into my vehicle form. Said that they had a real turret for me to use, but they needed to make some quick modifications while they still had time. Explained that they wanted me to be able to fire back at the Soviets should they catch up to us during our retreat. Seemed reasonable, so I complied. They brought a few boxes on board from behind me. I couldn't see what was in them. By the time I realized what they were actually doing, it was too late.
It is not possible for me to describe the pain I felt as I was ripped apart from within. But it is not an experience I would wish on anyone. Somehow, despite the agony, I was still alive. They had not used enough explosives to kill me.
Perhaps they were running low or were simply rushing. Either way, I lived and was furious. But I was still badly hurt and could not move.
The next people I saw were the Soviets, who were more curious than hostile. They recognized I was badly hurt and knew I was no threat to them. I asked about my sister, explained that there were two of us and begged them to find her. They promised they'd tell me if they found anything, and to their credit, they did.
They found her remains and her turret.
Said it had been thrown off of her from an internal explosion.
It didn't take a rocket scientist to deduce what had happened. At least based on all the information I had. They gave me the turret. I think at least the Soviet soldiers did so out of kindness.
But their superiors had other ideas. I was tested and then effectively imprisoned. You know most of the rest of my story.
But I had no clue she could have been alive. Rea all these years. Dietmar Bloomhart's journal mentioned a man named Rudinger.
>> Who is Bloomhart?
>> The brains behind Project Schwarza.
The journal mentions that this Rudinger man was constantly interrupting tests and worried about the subject's comfort.
I I have a hard time picturing Jasper being a part of something so horrific.
And if Magdi was the one they they Oh my god. We still don't know for sure, but could you tell Spectre what you told me?
>> Yeah. Yeah. Okay, let's let's go see her.
>> Thank you, Magna, for sharing what information you have. I know it is not easy given the subject matter.
>> Yes, understatement of the century.
>> Just just to be clear, this is all you know. Are there any other details you can share?
>> That's everything.
>> And Jasper Rudinger was just a mechanic as far as you know.
>> That's right. He was a kind soul, so I believed.
>> And that could still be true.
Rudinger is not an uncommon German surname. It may not be him that Dietmar was referring to.
>> Do you really think they used my sister?
Do you really think she was abused so brutally?
>> I I suspect it. Yes.
Not 100% sure, but >> it's surreal. Thinking her dying via internal explosion would have been merciful compared to the other option.
>> Can I get you anything? A water or >> No. No, thank you. I'm I'm fine. Just need time to process all this. If it is her, is she still alive?
>> Maybe. But again, we we aren't sure yet.
The Ratta and the monster.
They would they would be my nieces.
>> Yes. Yes, they they would.
>> Ma'am, I am sorry to interrupt. We have a signal coming from the Rata's tracker.
>> What? Where?
>> It's near Paris. She Huh? She She's gone again.
>> Try to isolate it. Wait. What's going on here?
>> I'm not sure. All electronic systems showing France are shutting down. Radio, television, it's all gone. France, it's it's gone dark.
>> Contact their government now.
>> I'm trying, but but nothing is getting through. You said she was near Paris.
>> That's right.
I'll need a ride. Ask Stella to prepare for takeoff. You'd be going in blind.
>> Yes, but I've faced them already. I know more than the French likely do. Take me with you, >> Magna. Are you sure?
>> If they really are my nieces, maybe they'll listen to me. Maybe I can talk to them. Get them to stop whatever they're doing. Something.
>> Let's go get Cle, too. She knows Paris better than we do.
>> Roger that.
>> The virus is active. Any potential resistance is in chaos. Mahilda, are you in position?
>> I am. Just give the word.
>> Reaganburgger, you're on.
>> I wonder how the Parisian streets will hold up against my treads.
SL YES.
