Geely's 16-in-1 System Just Killed BYD's Advantage
Added:This is the story of how a Chinese automaker most people outside Asia have never heard of just leapfrogged BYD, the world's largest electric vehicle company, with a piece of technology so advanced [music] it could reshape the entire auto industry.
Geely has unveiled a 16-in-1 [music] electric drive system, and the numbers behind it are genuinely staggering.
To understand why this matters, >> [music] >> you need to understand what an electric drive system actually does. Think of it as the heart, [music] brain, and nervous system of an electric vehicle, all rolled into one.
It contains the motor, the motor controller, the power distribution [music] unit, the charging system, and a whole constellation of other components that traditionally sit as separate [music] boxes wired together with hundreds of connectors and cables.
Every connection point is a potential failure.
Every separate housing adds weight.
Every gap [music] between components bleeds energy as heat.
BYD, >> [music] >> the current king of Chinese electric vehicles, runs what's called an 8-in-1 system on its [music] e-platform 3.0, consolidating eight functions into a single unit. When BYD launched that in September 2021, >> [music] >> it was considered bleeding edge. The system achieves at least 89% overall efficiency, >> [music] >> which is impressive by any measure. That platform helped BYD sell nearly 3 and 1/2 million passenger NEVs in 2025 alone, commanding over 27% of the Chinese market.
Geely just doubled that integration level. 16 functions, one unit, 75 kg, which is 165 lb for an entire drivetrain system. The Thunder 16-in-1 intelligent electric drive, developed by Geely's subsidiary, InfiMotion, consolidates 12 hardware functions into a single housing. The motor, motor controller, reducer, [music] DC-to-DC converter, onboard charger, power distribution [music] unit, high-voltage battery management, low-voltage battery management, [music] vehicle control unit, thermal management system, active precharge control, and power domain gateway.
On top [music] of that, four software capabilities are baked directly into the system. Intelligent energy management, [music] intelligent charging management, intelligent motion control, and intelligent health management.
The result is a comprehensive efficiency of 93.8%.
That gap between BYD's 89% and Geely's 93.8 might sound small, but in drivetrain engineering, a 5.4% [music] improvement is enormous.
It translates directly [music] into longer range, smaller batteries for equivalent performance, and lower production costs.
This integration [music] eliminates over 180 redundant components, and achieves a power density of 11.8 kW [music] per kilogram.
The kind of density that belonged to aerospace engineering [music] just a few years ago.
And the company behind this technology, [music] InfiMotion, was founded in December 2021.
It's barely 5 years [music] old, and it already employs more than 6,000 people, operates five factories and research centers [music] across China and Gothenburg, Sweden, and counts Polestar, Lotus, and Jaguar Land Rover among its customers.
Revenue projections for 2026 set at 20 billion yuan.
Industry analysts are already calling InfiMotion a potential next CATL, the battery giant that dominates global EV supply chains.
But none of this exists in a vacuum.
To truly appreciate what Geely has built, you have to know where it came from.
Li Shufu was born in 1963 in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, the son of a farmer.
As a boy, he made his first cars out of sand.
He launched his career as a photographer in the early 1980s, but when the state refused to approve his business, he pivoted to recycling electronic waste, then manufacturing refrigerator parts and [music] magnesium-aluminum decorative panels.
He spotted an opportunity in mopeds, built that business, [music] and then in 1997 made the audacious leap into automobiles.
People called him crazy.
When critics [music] pointed out he had zero experience making cars, Li dismissed them with what became one of the most famous quotes [music] in Chinese business history. "Making a car is not hard. It is just four wheels and two couches."
He has been proving doubters wrong ever since. In 2010, Geely purchased Volvo cars from Ford for $1.8 billion, a deal that stunned the global automotive world.
>> [music] >> In 2018, Li acquired a 9.7% stake in Daimler, parent company of Mercedes-Benz.
In 2022, he picked up a stake in Aston Martin. Today, >> [music] >> Geely's empire spans Volvo, Polestar, Lotus, Zeekr, Link [music] & Co, satellite companies, and ride-hailing businesses, and Li Shufu's net worth sits at an estimated [music] $16.9 billion. dollars.
His company is now deploying the Thunder drivetrain in a real vehicle, >> [music] >> the Geely Galaxy TT, a fastback sedan stretching nearly 5 m [music] long, rides on an 800-V electrical architecture with CATL batteries offering up to 725 [music] km of range on the Chinese CLTC cycle.
The dual-motor all-wheel-drive configuration [music] puts out a combined 570 horsepower, launching the car to 100 km/h in 3.8 [music] seconds with a top speed of 210.
But, it's not the speed that earned headlines.
During testing around China's Qinghai [music] Lake, the Galaxy TT recorded energy consumption of just 8.20 [music] kWh per 100 km, earning an actual Guinness World Record for the lowest [music] energy consumption by a mass-produced battery-electric sedan on that route.
And, because one world record apparently wasn't enough, two Galaxy TT [music] sedans then completed a synchronized continuous drift spanning over 46 km on a wet surface, setting a second Guinness Record for the longest continuous [music] twin vehicle drift by electric vehicles on a wet surface.
The drive unit features [music] 54-channel cooling technology that reduces peak motor temperatures by up to 15° C, and Geely rates the system's lifespan at 5 million kilometers.
Production runs out of Geely's Ningbo powertrain facility with an initial annual capacity of 300,000 units.
Pre-sales for the Galaxy TT Ultra opened on July 21st, 2026, priced at 209,800 yuan, >> [music] >> roughly $30,900 with an initial limited run of 999 units.
Now, some important context. The 93.8% efficiency figure is measured on the Chinese CLTC test [music] cycle, which tends to produce more optimistic numbers than the EPA or [music] WLTP standards used in Western markets.
Geely has said it will release third-party verification results [music] in coming months, so independent confirmation is still pending. The broader Chinese EV market is also facing real headwinds, with year-to-date sales through February 2026 dipping 19.5% amid brutal [music] price wars and overcapacity.
Li Shufu acknowledged this reality in mid-2025 [music] when he announced Geely would pause all new plant construction globally, refocusing resources on technology [music] rather than expansion.
That strategic pivot is exactly what produced the Thunder [music] system, and Geely's trajectory suggests the bet is paying off.
In 2025, [music] the company posted record revenue of 345.2 billion yuan, with NEV sales surging 90% [music] year-over-year. Geely Galaxy, the NEV sub-brand, grew 150% [music] to 1.24 million units, making it the fastest NEV brand to reach 1 million annual sales.
Total global deliveries hit 3.02 million vehicles across 88 countries [music] and over 1,200 outlets.
What makes the 16-in-1 system genuinely significant beyond the spec sheet is what it signals about the direction of the entire industry.
Doubling the integration level of a drivetrain doesn't just improve one car, it simplifies manufacturing, reduces points of failure, >> [music] >> and creates more compact packaging that gives vehicle designers far greater freedom. When that technology sits inside a subsidiary like InfiMotion that already supplies multiple global brands, >> [music] >> it has the potential to ripple outward across the entire automotive landscape.
BYD still leads the Chinese NEV market.
It still sells more cars.
But in the race for drivetrain technology, the company that a farmer's son built out of sand, refrigerator [music] parts, and sheer stubbornness just took the lead. And the distance between four wheels and two couches and the most efficient production electric drivetrain ever made turns out to be about 40 years of relentless, improbable ambition.
