The Most Dangerous Time in a Baby Bird's Life

[00:00:02]This tiny chickadee is about to do the most dangerous thing of its life.

[00:00:08]Leave the nest.

[00:00:13]For much of a nestling's life, time in the nest is one of predictability, warmth, protection, and food arriving every few minutes or so.

[00:00:25]Nestlings snuggle together beneath their mother's body.

[00:00:30]And during the brief moments when she needs a break, they still have one another.

[00:00:37]Even when alone, the parents are rarely far away, keeping watch and guarding the nearby territory.

[00:00:46]But as the days pass, the nestlings grow surprisingly fast.

[00:00:51]Almost overnight, they become too large and restless for their mother to brood as easily as she once did.

[00:01:00]Some bird mothers continue trying for a little while longer until the nest becomes too cramped, leaving them little choice but to stop.

[00:01:10]Often by this stage, the mother also begins helping with food delivery, joining the father in feeding their much larger and much hungrier little ones.

[00:01:24]With more feather coverage and warmer days, the once welcome comfort of siblings can start to feel a little less comfortable.

[00:01:33]It becomes harder to stay cool and find space inside an ever-shrinking nest.

[00:01:39]Something cavity nesters like chickadees occasionally get a small reprieve from when raising their young inside roomy nest boxes.

[00:01:50]The need to stretch their wings and legs grow stronger now, along with their awareness of both themselves and the world around them.

[00:02:02]Some take bold first steps, daring to peek beyond the nest cavity.

[00:02:13]While others from open nests venture onto the outer branches for the very first time.

[00:02:19]Instinct along with dwindling space begins tugging at their curiosity about the world beyond their humble nursery.

[00:02:29]More and more the young birds become adventurous, some far more than others.

[00:02:35]How intimidating or perhaps exciting everything must seem to them.

[00:02:43]With wings flapping and loud chirps spilling from their tiny beaks, they've entered one of the most dangerous periods of their young lives.

[00:02:53]Staying in the nest once their place of safety has become riskier by the day.

[00:03:01]The nest is crowded, noisier, and there's more activity.

[00:03:05]Predators are more likely to discover the location.

[00:03:11]Eventually the chicks must leave even before they fully know how to fly.

[00:03:17]This once safe nursery is growing more uncertain with every passing moment. The urge to leap beginning to overpower any lingering fear.

[00:03:28]One by one they make that risky jump.

[00:03:36]And from this moment on everything changes.

[00:03:41]Young birds remain vulnerable for days, sometimes weeks. Many still struggle to fully control their flight and are easy targets for predators.

[00:03:50]So the parents continue feeding, guiding, and protecting them while they learn to navigate an unpredictable world.

[00:03:59]Every bird you see flying confidently through the forest once had a first flight like this.

[00:04:06]For bird parents, raising young has always led to this moment.

[00:04:11]Letting them go.

[00:04:14]But, for some bird families, the challenges begin long before that first flight.

[00:04:20]One chickadee pair I followed raised their young in a nest unlike anything I'd ever seen chickadees use before.
