The [music] first and most common issue is a difference between stability and perfection. A lot of reef keepers focus on hitting perfect numbers. [music] This would be alkalinity, calcium, and nutrients. When in reality, corals respond much more to consistency than exact values. You can have ideal parameters on a test kit, but if those numbers are fluctuating day to day, even slightly, it can stall growth. [music] Corals don't thrive in systems that are constantly being adjusted. They thrive in environments that are stable over [music] time. Small swings in alkalinity, inconsistent salinity due to evaporation, or irregular dosing can also slow down growth without showing immediate visible damage. Another major factor is nutrient balance. This is one of the most misunderstood areas in reefing. Many hobbyists aim for ultra-low nutrients, thinking that cleaner water equals better coral health. But in reality, corals need nutrients to grow. If nitrate and phosphate are too low, especially near zero, corals can survive, but they often won't thrive or grow. On the flip side, excessively high nutrients [music] can also inhibit growth and lead to algae competition. The goal isn't zero and it isn't high, it's a balance. [music] A stable, measurable level of nutrients provides the fuel corals need for tissue growth and coloration. Lighting is another area where growth can be limited and it's not just about how much light you're providing, it's about how you're providing it. Many hobbyists assume that increasing intensity will drive growth, but more light doesn't equal better results. In fact, too much intensity without the right spectrum can stress corals. Corals rely heavily on specific wavelengths for photosynthesis. If your spectrum isn't properly balanced or if your lighting is inconsistent, corals may not be receiving the energy they need, even if the tank looks bright. On the other hand, running lights too dim can also limit growth by not providing enough energy. Flow also plays a critical role and is often overlooked.
