The Pan-African Parliament's leadership elections are complicated by regional divisions, particularly in the Southern African Development Community (SADC) region, where countries like Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Angola have presented multiple candidates for vice president positions, creating internal conflicts that challenge the organization's unity and decision-making processes.

PAP prepares for crucial leadership electionHinzugefügt:
Good morning, Leanne.
>> All right, so let's uh let's talk about what uh what happened yesterday and what what we're looking at for today.
>> Well, yesterday the countries continued to discuss in different regions who the candidates should be for example the position of the president and the four vice presidents. And therefore today we expect now the election this morning of the president and of course uh the elections of the four vice presidents.
When you look at the president you know that they are now using a rotation system to avoid the tension we saw in 2021. Therefore, the north region must present a candidate and they have presented a candidate from Algeria. Then on the four vice president there seems to be uh some problems there because the eastern region uh that includes the horn of Africa has presented one candidate that is Ethopia but the second region west h they have presented two candidates Gambia and Ghana. Then the third region that is the sens region has presented chart that's one candidate and then the fourth region that is the southern region that includes South Africa s and others h have presented two candidates there it is and angola so it looks like southern region is beginning to be divided all the time when they are supposed to present a a a candidate at any contestation at any organization. So it's the second time we see the southern region that is the subject almost presenting two candidates when they need to present one candidate. It happened during the election of the African Development Bank. It happened during the AU uh when there was a contestation for the peace and security council. South Africa finally did one. South Africa wanted to present its candidate for the vice president. But it looks like the southern region countries didn't support South Africa because there's division we are told Botswana in particular and Zimbabwe were pushing for different candidates. On the other hand, Angola was insisting that someone who speak Portuguese either from Angola or for Mozambique must be a candidate.
Therefore, this issue of the Saddak needs to be uh looked at why there seems to be divisions all the time in the Saddak region in different platforms.
>> All right, SA Mcreno, let's leave it there. Uh we look forward to more coming out of it today and see the conclusions.
