The United Nations, through its spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, is actively addressing rising tensions in the Strait of Hormuz following missile and drone attacks on the UAE, emphasizing that the UN's role is to promote peaceful dispute resolution through international law, facilitate humanitarian corridors for essential goods like fertilizer, and work toward restoring freedom of navigation in this critical global trade route, while avoiding direct legal determinations about the status of war between nations.

"Hormuz Must Reopen Immediately" Says Dujarric Amid Rising Tensions | APTAdded:
As the pilots like to say, I will blame air traffic control.
The Council held close consultations on the implementation of Security Council 1559, which We are deeply concerned that multiple missiles and drones were launched at the United Arab Emirates on May 4th, which reportedly resulted in three people injured and caused a fire in an oil facility in Fujairah oil industry zone.
In addition to the incident, several strikes targeting vessels took place in and around the Strait of Hormuz in recent days. That is significantly raising the danger of renewed hostilities in the region amid an increasingly strained cessation of hostilities. We call on all parties to exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action which could escalate tensions and undermine ongoing diplomatic and mediation efforts.
There is no viable alternative to the peaceful settlement of international disputes in full accordance with international law, including the Charter of these United Nations.
Uh, want to update you on the work of our friend Jean Arnault, the Personal Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Middle East crisis and its consequences.
Uh, Jean is scheduled to arrive imminently in Ankara, where he is continuing his engagement with relevant member states to support efforts aimed at helping the warring parties reach a comprehensive settlement. We expect him to meet with the Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan tomorrow. More travel will be announced in hopefully tomorrow.
What would be a humanitarian corridor uh, through the Strait of Hormuz in your point on in your opinion or as as a UN action?
>> Well, I mean, as you know, the Secretary-General has tasked Jorge Moreira da Silva of UNOPS to work with the International Maritime Organization, UNCTAD, the International Chamber of Commerce, and of course all the relevant parties in the region to try to establish a a mechanism which would allow uh, for humanitarian goods, notably fertilizer, to come out of the of the Strait of Hormuz.
Mr. Moreira da Silva, I think is on his way to New York today or tomorrow. He will have more discussions with various member states on this. And one more about the the demining effort in in the area, if it happens because it's now under discussion in the Security Council, as you may know.
Uh, so what's the entity in the UN that should take care of any demining Well, I don't from Listen, I I It's not for me to comment on draft resolutions before I've seen. I don't think it calls on a UN entity to be involved in demining. We don't So, that's not my read of the resolution.
Obviously, we want to see this international waterway open open safely and a restoration of the freedom of navigation that is so critical to the world.
For the UN in this moment, they you there is a war, I mean, there is a status of war on the Gulf between uh, Iran and United States states or not? I If you're you're asking me to give you a legal ruling or a >> legal I will not.
There is currently clearly conflict going on. There is a ceasefire.
Uh, but But is the status of war >> I I'm not going to engage into the legalities of what exactly that means.
We know what the situation is, and the situation is that the Strait of Hormuz is not open is not open to free navigation, to safe free navigation. We want that to be open. We're still seeing some kinetic activity. We saw it in the in the Strait yesterday. We saw it We saw it on the attacks on on the UAE yesterday as well. So, just both this is But if a senator from US Congress calls today the UN, the Secretary-General, and ask the questions, can you tell me if we are if United States is at war or not? I think a legislature from any member state uh, needs to come up with their needs to deal with their own government, and it's not for the Secretary-General to help them on their national debate.
As you know, the United States has sent the Navy to uh, end Iran's grip on the Strait. Uh, is that something that the Secretary-General stand behind because it could achieve help us achieve freedom of navigation?
Uh, there are parties uh, who are involved in this current conflict who can open up the Strait of Hormuz safely and freely, and everyone should do so.
International Organization for Migration, and I will get them. Don't go away.
