Management Accounting is a discipline that combines management functions (planning, organizing, staffing, directing, controlling) with accounting to provide information for decision-making. It was first coined in 1950 by the Anglo-American Council. Key features include: it is both a science (systematic data collection) and art (personal judgment); it provides services for all management levels; it is an integrated system combining techniques from multiple subjects; it is future-oriented using historical data for planning; it focuses on cost elements (fixed, variable, semi-variable); it emphasizes cause-and-effect analysis; its rules are not universal and can be modified; it supplies information but not decisions; and it helps achieve organizational objectives. The scope includes financial accounting, cost accounting, budgeting, forecasting, inventory control, reporting, interpretation of data, tax accounting, internal auditing, office services, and responsibility accounting. Functions are divided into operating functions (recording data, validating data, communicating financial data, interpretation) and theoretical functions (forecasting and planning, organizing, controlling, communication, coordination, motivation).
