During the Battle of Stalingrad in 1942, Soviet General Vasili Chuykov commanded the 62nd Army on the western bank of the Volga River, where he famously vowed to die in the city rather than retreat. He developed a tactical approach of maintaining extremely close proximity to German forces, preventing effective aerial bombing by making it too dangerous for German aircraft to attack. This defensive strategy enabled his army to hold their position for 200 days without retreating, ultimately contributing to the Soviet victory in one of World War II's most pivotal battles.
