International leaders often soften political criticism during high-stakes diplomatic summits to prioritize economic cooperation, as demonstrated by Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's reported easing of criticism toward U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the G7 Summit, where crucial trade negotiations for the USMCA agreement were expected to dominate discussions given that over 70% of Canadian exports depend on the U.S. market.

Carney BOWS BEFORE Trump Before G7? Carney SOFTENS Anti-Trump Tone Ahead Of High-Stakes G7 Summit
Added:President Trump, in in meeting settings, of course we want to know his perspective. One always wants to know the perspective of the President of the United States.
But in meetings, these these are real exchanges. That was the case in Kananaskis. It's been the case in APEC and ASEAN and other meetings I've been with him.
And um he he listens as well as speaks. And so these are real exchanges and certainly the G7 is taking place at a critical time for the world geopolitically, geostrategically, given the wars that are ongoing, plus economically and a host of issues.
Present and future, including the future of AI. Thank you.
>> Hi there, Prime Minister. I'm Diane Campbell with CBC News.
>> Yes.
>> Um I do have a couple questions about the bridge if you don't mind. Um so my question to you is that um state Republicans in Michigan are saying that they want to get half the tolls as soon as the bridge opens. Is that on the table?
>> Uh look, Canada uh paid for the bridge.
Um we ensured that uh half of the um uh the construction work and the activity uh associated with it was shared with Michigan.
Um and the benefits of course of the bridge will be shared by all.
>> And um yes or no question. Um do you believe that uh >> There are no yes or no questions.
>> Sorry. Do [laughter] you do you believe that [clears throat] um this the situation with the bridge is a way for Trump to pressure Canada in negotiations?
>> No, look, the um the issues that have been raised have been raised by the US uh administration as a whole and are being addressed. We have not had a direct conversation, President and I, about this about this this issue. So I wouldn't As I said uh I said a moment ago and I said yesterday this is not a big drama. Uh We're working through. It take time to get things right. It's a It's a major binational project and we want to launch it in the right way in a collaborative way and that's those are the discussions we're having.
There are separate discussions.
The previous question related to Kuzma and our trade side which are ongoing.
We made some progress last week in Washington. Minister LeBlanc did on some technical issues.
There's a meeting next week at the G7 him and his his counterpart Ambassador Greer with our chief negotiator Janice Charette and we look to continue to move forward on those fronts. But I would I would distinguish I would distinguish the the two. You know, the Canadian-American relationship there are always countless issues between us from the security side to specific infrastructure to the trade side.
It's a NATO ally number one.
Secondly, regionally and I'm going to use that term with a capital R because it is a very large region from you know, from the Balkans through to to the Middle East to the Caucasus and beyond is one one of the most important um strategic partners or or powers in the region.
And so we have been um deepening the relationship. It's early days in deepening that relationship and I will be in Turkey as you know next month for the NATO summit and possibly again or likely again later in the year and so we're in a process of of scoping out the the deepening of that relationship.
Yes.
>> And following up on your approach to Turkey actually because we have time a question for that. Tomorrow is the response deadline for the parliamentary petition presented by Liberal MP Salma Zahid, which calls for extending work permits for over 7,000 Turkish earthquake survivors here in Canada.
Will your government commit to extending these temporary measures to provide these tax-paying, grocery-shopping families with clarity and fairness before their permit expires?
>> Uh I will look at it. Uh I have 24 hours to make a make a decision on it. It's not something that was uh immediately on my radar. But, thank you for the question and bringing it to my attention. Thank you.
>> Thank you. That concludes today's press conference. That concludes the conference. Thank you.
>> two.
>> All right. There you go. Thank you.
Thank you all. Thanks for coming.
