[00:00:10]The rope that killed four climbers It wasn't the strong rope they were supposed to use.

[00:00:19]Edward Whymper, 25 years old, led the team up the Swiss Hornli ridge.

[00:00:25]They summited at 1:40 p.m. beating an Italian team on the other side.

[00:00:30]But on the descent, 19-year-old Douglas Hadow, the least experienced, slipped on steep rocks.

[00:00:38]He pulled down three others.

[00:00:40]The rope snapped. Four men fell 1,200 m down the north [music] face to the Matterhorn glacier below.
