Wildlife rehabilitation is a costly but essential conservation effort, with individual cases ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of dollars, as demonstrated by a loggerhead turtle rehabilitation costing $17,500 over 10 months; this work is critical for addressing the growing wildlife crisis, particularly in Australia, where severe weather events and habitat loss are increasing extinction risks.

Double your impact for wildlifeAdded:
Did you know that on top of all of the animals that we look after in the zoo, [music] we also get 1,500 wildlife cases every year of animals that are orphaned, injured, or sick? Some cases will be really straightforward like a dehydrated echidna [music] or a marine bird that's been entangled in fishing line, but others are much more complicated and take [music] a lot more time and effort to figure out what's happening with them. But, the heartbreaking reality [music] is that our magnificent wildlife is at greater risk than ever before. And I'm sure you'll understand this life-saving [music] work does not come cheap. The cost of caring for even a sick, injured, or orphaned animal >> [music] >> adds up faster than you could ever imagine. From hundreds to thousands of dollars, >> [music] >> even to tens of thousands of dollars for the more complex cases. One example is this beautiful little loggerhead turtle.
Over 10 months of intricate rehabilitation, from special nutrition and housing, [music] this little animal was released off of Lord Howe Island with his own personal tracker. The care for this turtle ended up costing 17,500 [music] in total.
Ultimately, if we don't act now [music] and another severe weather incident hits, we're going to see the extinction crisis that Australia already faces become even more dramatic. On Tuesday, June 2nd, Taronga is having a giving day. For 24 hours, your generous donation will be doubled, making even more of an impact. [music] Thank you for being such a loyal supporter of Taronga.
I know how passionate you are about our wildlife and I hope you can continue to help us.
