Political advertisements that attack candidates on issues voters care about can sometimes backfire and increase the candidate's support, as seen when a union-funded ad attacking Spencer Pratt's policies on homelessness, policing, and unions went viral and potentially helped his mayoral campaign in Los Angeles.

‘Insane’: ‘Tone-deaf’ ad against Spencer Pratt goes viral for all the wrong reasonsAdded:
While we are speaking about the Democrats, we've got to talk to you about this darling of the left, AOC. Her recent claim that AOC is not backing away from that the American Revolution was against the billionaires of their time. Listen to this. The American Revolution was against the billionaires of their time. And we are declaring independence from such an extreme marriage of wealth and power and the state.
AOC has been community noted on X, but she's uh not backing away from those claims. John, >> well, let's just say that um I'm not going to comment on the fact that AOC had a very thin resume before she went to Congress and she clearly did not attend certain history classes at Boston University when she attended there.
>> Um, let's just say this.
>> Uh, I mean, I could go on and on with many names. The richest man in the colonies during the time of the American Revolution was a guy named John Hancock.
He's the guy if you look at the Declaration of Independence who signs it so large that it fills up practically, you know, a quarter of the page and he was the richest man in America and lots of the financeers of the American Revolution were extremely rich. Now, if she wants to talk about rich people, yes, the king of England was very rich.
Uh, but he wasn't really called a billionaire. was called a monarch and that's who we were revoling against. So this alternative history that AOC comes up with is not only cockamy, it's historically wrong and it just shows that the well, let's just say this, her knowledge of history proves that you could walk through her deepest thoughts and not get your ankles wet.
>> It's interesting knowledge of history and also geopolitics, it would seem. Uh she's embarrassed herself quite a few times for the cameras. I want to talk to you about Joe Biden. He's reportedly preparing to ask a court to stop the Trump administration from releasing his conversations with his ghost writer and those tapes played a central role in the classified documents investigation. So these tapes go to the heart of special counsel Robert Hers damaging conclusions that although special counsel ultimately declined to prosecute Joe Biden, they described him as a well-meaning elderly man with a poor memory. Now, the Heritage Foundation's portion of uh last week's filing accused Biden's legal team of stonewalling. What do you make of this?
>> Biden stonewalling? I shocked. No, >> Biden always said he was being completely transparent, especially health records. Of course, no. This is this is not ancient history, though. It just goes to show you that the real culprit here is the American news media that should have known or did know a lot about Joe Biden's limitations, especially the cognitive ones. Um, and they basically covered them up or ignored them. Uh, they didn't do their job. And you know, these records are public because the special prosecutor had to file a public report. There's no reason not to have these records come out. I suspect they eventually will and I suspect they will prove what we already know that Joe Biden was, shall we say, several several several cards short of an inside straight and if he were playing poker.
>> Well, that's one way of putting it. I want to talk to you about what's going on in LA. Countdown's on now until uh the new mayor is elected. But the LA mayoral candidate Spencer Pratt, formerly reality TV star, has announced that there will be mass arrests to clean up the streets of LA. He says that he'll be implementing a 3-w weekek grace period before he unleashes on criminals if he's elected. Let's just look at this.
>> First three weeks, signs up across the city. No more nakedness, no more drug use, no more robbing, no more, >> no more burning dogs in the street.
>> No more dog abuse. very on every sign on every part so that and we're going to go around we're going to warn everybody hey got three more weeks of this like clock's ticking just keep telling everyone just to so the people that are aware they're like oh wow there's a new mayor in town they may start leaving and then when the three weeks or maybe we'll even do two weeks maybe people will want it faster and then once we start enforcing laws boom streets will be back >> John I want to get your thoughts on that he's certainly cutting through certainly speaking to a issue in LA, which is some of the crime uh on the streets. Um, is it going to be as simple as that?
>> Well, no, of course not. But he's got the right message.
>> U Los Angeles are scared and they're angry and they're frustrated. Now, I believe that Spencer Pratt is frankly the West Coast version of Mandami in New York. Mandami took advantage of bent up public frustrations with high rent, the cost of living, uh the fact that uh the Democrats had were putting up a candidate, Andrew Cuomo, who was corrupt and uh out of touch and he managed to win and he did this coming from nowhere.
Now Spencer Pratt has a big problem. You know, Republicans are outnumbered four to one in Los Angeles and even though it's a nonpartisan race, he's he is going to be identified as a Republican in in the public mind. But I think he is the most exciting candidate on the ballot anywhere this year outside the midterm elections and he is going to get into the runoff which is going to be decided in June and I'm sorry in the into the initial primary he's going to get into the runoff. There will be a runoff in November. I think between now and November Los Angeles is finally going to have a conversation about how to clean up its city and how to restore fiscal sanity to the city and to in have people who actually know what they're doing as opposed to political hacks running the city. Yeah, and that conversation, well, it's long overdue, isn't it? It's interesting. This unionf funed political advertisement opposing Spencer Pratt is going viral, but perhaps for all the wrong reasons, not what they intended. This ad, which is supposed to attack Spencer Pratt over his policies while urging voters to reject uh the independent candidate, may just be getting him elected. You decide.
Let's look at this.
>> Republican Spencer Pratt is the last thing Los Angeles needs for mayor. Pratt opposes using taxpayer money to build brand new houses for our unhoused neighbors, saying it's time for the homeless to get help or get out. Pratt thinks LA needs thousands more police officers rather than more social workers. And Republican Spencer Pratt thinks public employee unions should have less power, not more. LA is on the right track and needs to stay the course. Vote no on Republican Spencer Pratt.
>> He's also running as an independent, but pretty interesting some of the messages there. I mean, wanting to put more police officers in the streets. Um, and also claiming that LA's on the right track. I mean, who really thinks that's the case?
>> Well, you know, there are there's an argument in politics that you have to bring out your base to vote. And I will agree there is a base, especially in Los Angeles, of 30 or 40% of the vote that u, you know, is completely woke and crazy, and they're going to groove on that ad. But there's also a part of the electorate that's in the middle that says, "Is the problem that I have in Los Angeles that there's not enough cops protecting me? Is the problem in Los Angeles that the public employee unions uh don't have enough power?" I mean, this is an insane ad. It's almost the mo it is probably the most tonedeaf ad I've seen in years, maybe even decades. It's almost as if it was designed by sleeper agents from the other side who've decided to design the Democratic ads in order to discredit the Democratic Party.
>> It's interesting, isn't it? I've seen it go viral everywhere on X saying this is just helping Spencer Pratt's campaign.
National Reviews National Affairs reporter John Fun, thank you so much for your time. Great to speak with you.
>> Pleasure. Thank you.
