The 2003 Anambra crisis in Nigeria demonstrates how political godfather systems can undermine democratic governance, as evidenced by the armed police attempt to remove Governor Chris Ngige from office following political disagreements with his godfather Chris Uba, ultimately resulting in Ngige losing the position through court rulings despite surviving the initial takeover attempt.

The Ngige Kidnap Scandal: Godfather vs GovernorAdded:
By 2003, Chris Uba was already a very powerful figure in Anambra politics. His name carried a lot of weight inside of the PDP. So, once Ngige became governor, people immediately connected [music] both men together with Uba being the godfather. Chris Uba's brother, Andy Uba, was also very influential inside the presidency at this time, and he was seen as close to President Obasanjo.
Apparently, before Ngige even entered office, all sorts of political promises and agreements had already been happening behind the scenes. So, once he became governor, people allegedly started expecting him to deliver on those promises. They expected him to fulfill his own side of those agreements. There were also allegations that political oaths had been sworn at Okija Shrine to seal the loyalty between politicians and their political sponsors.
Ngige himself would later admit that he was involved in the oath taking connected to the political arrangement around the election period. If you've watched my old Okija Shrine video, then you already know how serious and controversial those allegations were in Nigeria at that time. But, whatever actually happened behind closed doors, one thing became very obvious very quickly.
Things between Ngige and Chris Uba started going bad very fast. There were arguments behind the scenes about things like appointments, who was supposed to get what, who was really the influence around the governor, you know? Then money allegedly also entered the situation as well. Ngige would later claim that people around Chris Uba demanded huge amounts of money from the state government, including a 3 billion naira allegation that became one of the biggest talking points in the entire scandal. Chris Uba denied extorting Ngige, but he openly admitted that there had been political agreements before the election, and he said that he expected some level of influence inside of the government after helping Ngige politically.
At the same time, another major battle was already happening quietly in the background. Opposition candidate, Peter Obi, had already gone to court challenging the 2003 governorship election results. Obi insisted that the election had been rigged and that he was the real winner of the governorship election.
>> [music] >> So, while the fight between Ngige and Chris Uba was getting hotter inside the PDP, the election itself was already under legal attack, too.
Then, Ngige later said that he started getting strange phone calls warning him to be careful.
At the time, he didn't take them too seriously. He didn't think that the situation was about to explode the way it eventually did.
Then, on July 10th, 2003, Ngige arrived at Government House, like usual.
Then, armed police officers started entering the premises. [music] Then, according to later accounts, Ngige's security details were all disarmed. More officers started arriving. They took over the whole Government House, inside and outside.
Inside the building, confusion started spreading very quickly. At that point, it was obvious that this had gone beyond normal political drama.
According to multiple accounts, the police operation that day was being led by AIG Raphael Ige.
And as the chaos inside Government House kept growing, another shocking development hit Anambra. A resignation letter suddenly appeared, and it had been signed by Ngige, allegedly.
Meanwhile, Ngige himself insisted that he had not resigned.
>> [music] >> And the whole thing became even messier because the Anambra House of Assembly was also being dragged into the crisis.
While Ngige was still insisting that he had not resigned, lawmakers were already treating the resignation letter as real, and there were moves to swear in the deputy governor already.
At some point during the whole chaos, police officers escorted Ngige out of the Government House. Later accounts say that there were plans to move him somewhere else, but he eventually ended up at a hotel in Awka while the political drama kept getting worse. Even there, Ngige continued insisting that he had not stepped down. "I have not resigned." At some point, he managed to get through to Radio Nigeria, and he publicly denied resigning as governor.
This crisis was messy because people across Anambra were now hearing completely different stories at the same time. Eventually, the pressure around the situation became too big, too much to ignore. It became a national scandal.
>> [music] >> As the scandal kept growing, the Inspector General of Police, Tafa Balogun, publicly rejected the attempt to remove Ngige from office, and he declared Ngige still the lawful governor of Anambra State.
Little by little, the operation started collapsing. Ngige remained governor.
But, politically, the damage had already been done. This scandal became one of the biggest examples of godfather politics in the country's democratic history, you know?
Investigations and hearings followed afterwards.
Police officers were questioned.
Politicians were questioned. Nigerians kept asking the same question.
How had armed police officers almost succeeded in forcing a sitting governor out of office in a democracy?
But, even after surviving the whole 2003 crisis, Ngige's political troubles were still not over.
Years later, that long court battle over the election result eventually ruled in Peter Obi's favor.
Peter Obi was declared the real winner of the 2003 governorship election, and Ngige lost the office legally.
That ending is what makes the Anambra crisis so unusual even today because Ngige survived the alleged political takeover attempt only to later lose power through the courts anyway.
