We're also celebrating the Solemnity of Saints Peter and Paul, two of the greatest saints in our church's history. St. Peter, the first Pope and head of the Catholic Church, alongside St. Paul, known as the apostles to the Gentiles, led the church through the power of the Holy Spirit to bring the Gospels to the ends of the earth. That's why I'm thrilled to show you this extraordinary piece. This is the silver Giotto cross with icons.

[00:01:12]This design was inspired by a crucifix painted by Giotto around the year 1290.

[00:01:18]It was one of the first true depictions of Christ on the cross and shows Jesus' arms outstretched with knees bent and pulled by the weight of his body.

[00:01:27]This icon crucifix is made of hand-tooled silver-plated copper and mounted on a solid wood plaque.

[00:01:33]It features 24-karat gold accents and hand-polished red quartz stones.

[00:01:38]This particular icon also includes the following embellishments. A depiction of God the Father in the center at the top along with the martyrs Anthimus, Cosmas, Leontius, and Damian.

[00:01:51]At the end of the crossbeam is Our Lady on one side and St. Joseph on the other.

[00:01:56]Standing beside our Lord, we see St. Peter holding the keys to the kingdom and St. Paul holding the scriptures.

[00:02:03]And at the bottom of the cross is a baptismal scene symbolizing the connection between baptism and the death and resurrection of Christ, which links the act of baptism to the promise of eternal life through Christ's sacrifice.

In 1879, Catholics in Quebec desperately needed to build a new church, but were unable to transport stones across the freezing Saint Lawrence River. They prayed the rosary and suddenly the ice on the river miraculously froze solid for eight days.

[00:06:25]As soon as the work was complete, the ice broke apart.

He had seen a pig inside the church chewing on a rosary that was left behind by a pilgrim.

[00:09:16]July 1st is the feast day of Saint Junípero Serra. He was a Spanish Franciscan priest who played a major role in establishing Catholic missions in what is now California during the 18th century. And this is a Tiny Saints clip-on of him.
