California's wolves were nearly eradicated by state bounty laws and federal poisoning campaigns in the 1920s, with the last wolf trapped in Lassen County in 1924; however, the species began returning on its own starting in 2011 when male wolf OR-7 walked 1,000 miles from Oregon into California, and his descendants, including female wolf BEY03F, have since repopulated the state, with BEY03F becoming the first wolf documented in Sequoia National Park in over 100 years on May 17, 2026.

The First Wolf in Sequoia National Park in 100 Years #shorts #sequoia #wolfAdded:
Last Sunday, for the first time in over 100 years, a wolf walked into Sequoia National Park.
Her name is BEY03F, [music] and she was born in 2023 to the Bay Area Pack in Northern California, where she has spent the last several months walking south in search of a mate. Earlier this year, she became the first wolf [music] documented in LA County in modern times before turning around, crossing the Tehachapis into Inyo County, and finally, [music] on May 17th, triggering a collar ping near Mount Pickering inside the park. But let's take it back a century, back to when wolves still ranged across the Sierra Nevada, the Central Valley, and the coastal ranges before California [music] started paying people to kill them.
Between state bounty laws and federal poisoning campaigns, the population collapsed within a generation, and the last wolf [music] taken in California was trapped in Lassen County in 1924.
They bounced back on their own, though, starting in 2011 with a male called OR-7, who walked a thousand miles south from Oregon, crossed the state line, and eventually [music] started a pack whose descendants include BEY03F herself. She is still inside [music] the national park today, probably alone and still looking for a mate. But for the first time since [music] before the National Park Service existed, a wild wolf is once again moving through the giant sequoias.
