Conopholis americana, commonly known as cancer root or bear corn, is a parasitic plant that grows to a maximum height of 4 inches and resembles a pine cone or corn on the cob in early spring; it feeds on the roots of oak trees, particularly in areas with dense oak populations, and can survive through winter despite eventually dying off as it matures.

Bear Corn.Hinzugefügt:
Okay, guys. Are you ready for this?
Conopholis americana, also called cancer root or even bear corn.
Usually grows probably in maximum of 4 in, but as it grows in early spring, it sort of resembles a pine cone or a corn corn on the cob.
Now, as you see, there's lots of oak trees around here and they typically uh feed their parasite feed off the roots of oak trees especially.
So, as they grow and you can see there's a patch up here, um they'll turn brown and begin to die off and they can often last through the winter like those have right here.
Big patches of it on this ridge that I find each year. Here's a big pile from last year.
So, it is a parasitic plant.
