This Week in Art Pottery - Channel IntroAdded:
Welcome to This Week in Art Pottery, our first episode.
I'm Mark Moyer. My wife Kim and I are from Zanesville, Ohio, but like many who were raised there, we knew surprisingly little about the remarkable Zanesville and Ohio art pottery movement that flourished at the turn of the last century.
Our collecting journey began quite simply with gifts. Kim received two Weller pieces from her two grandmothers.
Both women had grown up around local art pottery, and interestingly, had little affection for it themselves. We, on the other hand, were thrilled. These pieces remain in our collection to this day, and they sparked a lifelong passion.
From that moment on, we became art pottery collectors.
In the early years, our collection grew slowly. Between limited funds and the demands of raising children, our priorities were the same as for most young families. What we did have, however, was curiosity. We spent those years reading and studying and listening to experienced [music] collectors, learning everything we could about the pottery companies, the designers, the decorators, and artists [music] who shaped this extraordinary period in American ceramics.
>> [snorts] >> Over time, as our knowledge deepened and our opportunities arose, we were fortunate not only to add a few carefully chosen pieces each year, but also to acquire groupings from notable collections. [music] 40-plus years later, our collection has grown and is prominently displayed throughout our home. This Week in Art Pottery episodes will naturally be centered on the Zanesville area potteries, [music] Weller, Roseville, Owens, Lonhuda, Mosaic, and AE Tile. But, we'll also highlight examples of Rookwood pottery, [music] which most would agree represents ground zero for the American art pottery movement. This channel is our way of sharing our pottery collecting journey. Each week or so, we'll publish a video featuring [music] four to six art pottery pieces from our collection. Viewers will have the opportunity to closely examine each piece while we share how it was acquired, discuss the artist, the pottery line, and highlight interesting historical or design details. Our goal is to serve collectors and admirers alike, offering a resource that helps deepen appreciation, enhance collecting knowledge, and inform [music] thoughtful collecting strategies.
From time to time, we also hope to interview and feature important private collections, [music] museum collections, auction houses, and respected experts and private collectors. Each guest will bring their own perspective and insights to the rich world of American art pottery. One word of caution, although Kim and I are long-time passionate collectors and art pottery admirers, we don't consider ourselves experts. [music] Trust me, we've met true experts over the years and we're not among them.
In fact, we learn something new almost every week.
>> [music] >> So, if we present something that you question or leave something out of an episode, please don't hesitate [music] to let us know.
We invite you to enjoy this remarkable artistic legacy with us. We already have a couple of years of episodes content ready to go. So, please like and subscribe so that we might take you along on our art pottery journey. Our next episode is titled remarkable scenics and pictorials. I promise you less talk and more art pottery. Thank you.
