Carney’s address is a sophisticated exercise in sovereignty-building that seeks to insulate national policy from the volatility of neighboring populism. However, the transition from rhetorical independence to genuine strategic autonomy remains a formidable challenge for any middle power.

Canada PM puts THE SCREWS IN Trump in POWERFUL ADDRESS!!Added:
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney just gave a powerful address to his nation and he called out Donald Trump and Trump's despicable regime. Here's how Phil Stewart of Reuters put it. Canada's close ties to the United States were once a strength but have become a weakness. Prime Minister Carney said on Sunday in a video message to his country in which he also praised the heroism of military leaders who fought against the US invasion more than two centuries ago, holding up a small toy soldier depiction of General Isaac Brock, the British military leader who died defending what is now Canada from a US invasion in the War of 1812. Carney said, "Canada can't control the disruption coming from its US neighbors and can't bet its future on the hope that it will suddenly stop. The situation today feels unique, but we face down threats like this before," Carney said, referencing Brock and several other Canadian historical figures, including multiple indigenous uh leaders across the gate the Great Lakes who resisted US expansion in 1812.
The meaning, the symbolism, it was all clear. Canada is sovereign. Canada is free. Canada is proud. Canada will never be the 51st state. And Canada will fight back always and be the new leader of the free world that it has become under Prime Minister Carney. Shout out Maple Midas. We see you all here. Prime Minister Carney talks about how this situation feels unique, but we've faced threats like this before. Let's play it.
The situation today feels unique, but we've faced down threats like this before, and in the weeks and months ahead, I'm going to want to talk with you again. I know you have busy lives, and you don't need daily interruptions from me. But the truth is, there's a lot going on in the world, and not all of it is good, and the stakes could not be higher.
The way we're going to get through this is together.
There's much forward guidance to be found in our shared history. We will get through this because of who we have always been. A country of tough, decent, caring people. People who grow stronger in adversity.
It's our country. It's our future. We are taking back control to build Canada strong.
It's already working. Let's keep going.
Thank you for your time. I know it's precious. Then he talks about how Canadians have responded with spirit responding to this crisis. Let's play it. We have everything we need here at home. Most of all, we have each other.
Canadians are the hardest working, best educated people in the world. We care deeply about each other and about our country. And Canadians have responded to this crisis with that spirit. We're buying Canadian. We're investing Canadian. We're exploring Canadian.
Canadians everywhere are all in. We all desire a better country.
>> More from Prime Minister Carney here talking about how we have to take care of ourselves. We can't rely on foreign partners anymore. Play this clip. And the days that young Canadians have known all their lives haven't been that good.
Their lifetimes have been marked by a series of shocks and crises from abroad.
The Iraq war, the global financial crisis, COVID, and now this. We have to take care of ourselves because we can't rely on one foreign partner. We can't control the disruption coming from our neighbors. We can't bet our future on the hope that it will suddenly stop. But we can control what happens here. We can build a stronger country that can withstand disruptions from abroad, that creates good jobs here at home, that's a leader in this new world with a vast network of reliable allies.
That's the Canada strong plan we're putting into action.
>> Prime Minister Carney talks about how we need to have comprehensive plans. We can't just wait it out. Play this clip.
>> There are some who say there's no need for a comprehensive plan. They believe we should wait it out in the hope that the United States will return to normal, that the good old days will come back.
But hope isn't a plan and nostalgia is not a strategy. He talks about how the former strengths of Canada, the close ties to the United States, it's now a weakness. Here, play this clip. So, here's the current situation. The world, as I said earlier, is more dangerous and divided. US has fundamentally changed its approach to trade, raising its tariffs to levels last seen during the Great Depression. Many of our former strengths based on our close ties to America have become our weaknesses.
Weaknesses that we must correct. Workers in our industries most affected by US tariffs in autos, in steel, in lumber are under threat. Businesses are holding back investments restrained by the p of uncertainty that's hanging over all of us. The US has changed and we must respond. And then Prime Minister Carney talks about his uh leadership skills over the year. He talks about how he's weathered some of the great financial crises, whether it was the Great Recession, whether it was Brexit. Here it goes. Play this clip. I know from experience that outside forces can sometimes seem overwhelming. My previous jobs at the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England was part of my duties to make regular public reports on what we were doing to manage the economy. And I remember during the financial crisis when there was a real risk of panic, I developed a practice called forward guidance. It was designed to assure people that however difficult the situation seemed on any given day that we were acting and importantly that we would continue to act with overwhelming force against our problems until they were solved. And that's the spirit I'm talking to you about today. Security can't be achieved by ignoring the obvious or downplaying the very real threats that we Canadians face. I promise you I will never sugarcoat our challenges. Instead, I will talk with you directly and regularly about our plan.
Now, it's also notable that as Prime Minister Carney was giving this address, he had recently wrapped up a meeting with the president of Finland, Alexander Stub. Uh what a great trip that was. and Stub gave uh an interview to Canadian media and he says now it's over 60% of Canadians want to join the EU. Here was his message as Carney blasted out that powerful message. Play this clip. I think we live in exceptional times. Uh and uh I'm an an EU nerd. Uh I wrote my PhD on flexible integration that not everyone has to do everything in the union at the same time. I hope that Canada and the European Union can be as close as possible. What that then means in the long run is for the Canadian people to decide, for the European Union to decide, but was it up to me and someone posted the question, do you mind Canada joining the EU? I would embrace you because I think you guys are great and you would slot into the system uh like nothing before.
>> More from Stu right here about Canada and Finland relations. Let's play it. I think I think we're just going to go from strength to strength because we're very similar in mindset. We're very similar in geography. It's easy to get along with Canadians. Not only because we're hockey nations, but you know, we're good at maritime stuff, building ships, we're good at tech in terms of quantum, we're good at satellites, we're good at mining. Um, so there's so many things that we can do together. And of course, you know, Mark Carney talks about middle powers, right? Mhm.
>> Finland is a small power, small or medium-sized power, but the EU is a big power. So therefore, by definition, dealing with a country like Finland together with Canada is is is sort of mid powers working together. And I think it's going to I I think it's going to be a really good marriage.
>> Here's what he had to say about Donald Trump. Let's play it.
>> I I I don't think that America is President Trump. I mean, President Trump is the president of America, but America has many different >> voted for millions of Americans voted for him. That's part of democracy as well. And democratic elections, you don't always get what you want. But I want to live with the reality that I think the transatlantic partnership, the relationship between Europe and the US and of course, Canada is super important. So, I don't want to throw the baby out with the bath water. here he talks about uh more of the links between Canada and the EU. Let's play it. I think Canada in terms of its hold composure, its value base is so close to the European Union that the least I the the the the least we can do is to forge a really close strategic partnership.
and what that then leads to in the end with the EU which started as six ended up with 28 then after Brexit with 27 I don't know I can envisage a much larger EU whether Canada is a part of it or not is up to Canada to decide he talks about being a small country and how you have to work together and you have to uh work for the better good of the world here play this clip so for a small country like myself information is power so if I have a piece of information, I'll send it to Mark. If Mark has a piece of information, he might inform me.
Sometimes we have group chats with close allies. And do I feel the pressure? No, not really because I'm quite focused on what we do. And you also have to understand that, you know, you have at the end of the day rather limited impact. It is super interesting, sometimes quite frustrating, at many days very tragic, but we have to be very pragmatic, find solutions, and at the end of the day, uh, I'm no more optimist. If you don't know how things are going to end up, assume that they will end up all good.
>> And here, Stub talks about how the US is finding itself in a very lonely, lonely place right now. Here, play this clip. I think at the end of the day, the United States will find themselves in quite a lonely place. I mean, I'm the most pro-american president in Europe. I'm an avid transatlanticist.
I I want the relationship to work, but I fully also realize that, you know, with certain patterns of behavior, uh there is going to be a feeling of okay, if if if you treat me like that, I don't feel very good about it. And we can see that with European states. We can see it with, you know, Gulf states and and and many others. So I hope that it's in the interest of the United States if it wants to continue to be one of the world hegeimons to have close friends and allies. And here's what Stub has to say about Ukraine. Let's play it. Can we afford to keep Ukraine outside in the sense that they now have the greatest military knowhow? And they're showing that in the Gulf region, defending the Gulf States from Iran. And I hope the Americans understand and and see this.
So, >> but what do you mean by keeping them outside? You mean keeping them out of NATO? Is that what >> Well, I would prefer in the long run to see Ukraine in NATO. Uh, you know, I know for political reasons, some people have problems with that, but let's think about it really serious. I mean, what are the biggest conventional militaries in in Europe or in the in Europe right now? They're Turkey, >> Ukraine, Poland, and Finland. Should we not use this? And to understand that the Russian threat is not going away. So what then gives us comfort? In my mind, it's Ukraine. There you have it, folks.
Let me know what you think. Powerful speech by Carney and Stub and so many other world leaders, pro-democracy leaders stepping up. I've showed you speeches recently at Prime Minister Sanchez of Spain. I showed you President Lula's speeches in Brazil. I've showed you, Friends, President Emanuel Mcronone speeches, right? I showed you Anthony Albani speeches. We've showed you the new speeches by Peter Maguiar, the new leader of Hungary. You know, it's time to support pro-democracy leaders internationally. And as the Midas Touch Network continues to grow, we are we are the front lines of uh providing uh a place for pro-democracy voices to connect with people, right? We we see how this right-wing MAGA Putin Orban Polyv Dutton right crap just leads you to the gutter and hate and festering and anger and division and destruction and death and hell breaking loose. So the alternative is pro-democracy and love and supporting each other. That's that's how you solve this. you lean in on values and principles that are worth fighting for and giving it all for.
