Construction began in the 1960s during the Cold War when China feared a potential nuclear conflict. The underground complex stretches for over 30 km and was designed to shelter millions of residents. Inside the tunnels were hospitals, classrooms, restaurants, factories, and even roller skating rinks. Ventilation systems and hidden entrances allowed people to move between buildings without being seen above ground. At the time, residents were encouraged to memorize the location of the nearest tunnel entrance in case of emergency. Much of the underground city is closed today, but parts were briefly opened to tourists in the early 2000s.
