The National Unity Platform (NUP), Uganda's largest opposition party, held a press conference to unveil its new parliamentary leadership structure, including a 30-member shadow cabinet designed to mirror the government's 82 ministerial positions. The party also announced Irene Nala as its flag bearer for the Kalangala district seat, selected through a transparent vetting and ground survey process where 14 women applied, 13 passed vetting, and Nala scored 68.2% in the final selection. The conference emphasized opposition accountability, unity among different political parties, and the party's commitment to reclaiming political power through people power.

My role is simple to unveil the leadership, our parliamentary leadership and uh as you all know ladies and gentlemen, we are forced in this position by circumstances. We should be the ones appointing the cabinet of the Republic of Uganda.
So we continue to struggle to make sure that eventually we get there where we want to go or where we truly the people of Uganda expect us to be. But while we do that we also recognize that we must use every platform to fight to seek accountability to push for better and all those other factors.
Unfortunately, I need to >> Okay. People power.

So he was consulted to constitute his cabinet that he will be working with and may I now invite him to come and present the cabinet that he's going to be working with. Thank you very much.
>> Thank you.
Good afternoon.
sympathiz Um I firstly We want to appreciate um the party leadership, the National Executive Committee for the trust and uh the confidence that they have in us as leaders to execute this mandate.
So we want to appreciate I would like to appreciate for this renewed mandate.
Um, incidentally on my end, I'm not so much in celebratory mode. I am really staring the task ahead in the face. It's uh going to be a challenging one, but I I also don't like easy things. And so, by God's grace, we'll be able to execute our mandate together with colleagues that we shall be working with in parliament. Um yeah, these are proposals for our shadow cabinet. Our shadow cabinet has got 30 slots.
The law says that we ought to have a shadow cabinet to mirror the central government cabinet and as you know they have about 82 cabinet ministerial positions. So ideally we in the opposition are also supposed to have 82 but we want to keep projecting to the people of Uganda the kind of government we are going to have when we actually take charge and so as far as we are concerned 30 cabinet ministers can run a country and so we don't want to do it when we get there we want to do it now and so we said we shall not have 82 shadow cabinet ministers as no we shall have 30 because when we take charge we believe that 30 cabinet ministers are very adequate to run government this business of creating all manner of cabinet positions for everybody we believe in a lean government so just to run through um the honorable har n has already been mentioned as deputy chief opposition she'll also be occupying the docket of shadow minister for Presidency. The honorable Karim Masara who is an independent cooperatives a micro finance.
The honorable seu from Kumbu defense and veteran affairs.
The honorable Shayla Amano Drail Information and anti-corruption.
The honorable Dr. Ununice Apio from UPC science innovation and technology.
The Honorable Ismile Casle from the Alliance for National Transformation, Trade and Industry.
The Honorable Oko Patrick Bonguti from the Democratic Party, Local Government.
The Honorable Sea Jira, Finance, Planning and Economic Development.
The Honorable Tandez, Animal Industry and Fisheries. The Honorable Alo John, Foreign Affairs. She's from the FDC.
The Honorable Sumaya Navanuka, Lands, Housing, and Urban Development.
The Honorable Luka Moses Mus Energy and Minerals.
The Honorable Kaluya Andrew Education.
The Honorable Kiza Hakim, East African Community Affairs.
The Honorable Jimmy Canavi, Public Service.
The Honorable Dr. Timothy Batura, Health.
The Honorable Naru Betto, Gender, Labor, and Social Development.
The Honorable Robert Masuka, Youth and Children Affairs.
The Honorable Fred Jalameo, tourism and wildlife. He's from UPC.
The Honorable Jamal Muayagi, Water and Environment.
The Honorable Utesa Patrick, Agriculture.
The honorable court Peter special regions is from the democratic party.
The honorable caps kungaro human rights is from FDC.
The honorable Abdalanka justice and constitutional affairs.
The honorable Zahara Malika Kala Capital City Authority.
The honorable Nyakato works and transport. She's from PFF.
The honorable Zambi bless you sports.
The honorable Hussein Muon Jo, culture and performing arts.
And last but certainly not least, our attorney general, shadow attorney general, the honorable Um yes, you'll notice everyone might not necessarily at this stage be part of shadow cabinet. Uh but we want to kick off and uh see how we keep moving because we said we didn't want to have a bloated shadow cabinet. So we'll start us off and uh really want to encourage colleagues. Let's go and deliver. Let's go and challenge the cabinet people on the other side and show people that we are an alternative government.
Also you will notice that um this shadow cabinet is reflective of all the opposition political parties in parliament.
Now I know and some people have said but we hear there's this political party it has an withm this one we don't quite understand it. When you are a leader and we are leaders you try and accommodate everybody. You try and bring everybody on board. You try and move with everyone that says let's move together. In the last months of the 11th parliament, you noticed that um each time we come together with many of these colleagues from the various political parties, whether it was about the sovereignt and a plethora of other beings and so we're working together.
You see usa many times you see us with colleagues from FDC, from BP, from PFF.
And so we said let's get onto a platform together. We might have a few differences here and there whether it be in approach whether it be in modi but we are saying we all want and aspire for a better country. So we have said let's work together with colleagues cuz I know some people will ask questions but now there's this party now there's this party we hear these ones we have put in individuals whom we have been working quite well together and we believe we shall continue to work well together with them that is NUP showing leadership that is NUP telling the country that we are ready to take charge of this country that we can bring everybody on board so it's a very important thing to do and uh it should not annoy anybody. It should uh excite people.
The beauty of course is um when you keep operating we we have done this in the past when somebody along the way goes off track you let them go. When somebody loses focus from the issues of concern to the people whether it is an NDP person whether it is FDC DPF or UBC we shall let them go. So no one should be worried that this one we are not too sure we shall know them by their fruits.
So along the way we shall see what the fruits look like. If the fruits are not good, we have done it before to people who seemed very powerful or so they thought to people who were very close to us even as NUP but said no this is wrong.
We shall let you go. This is not to intimidate colleagues but none of us is above reproach including myself executive committee.
Um Alternative Of course.
Shadow cabinet, central government.
Ministries Minister But minister Parliament.
Uhhuh.
FDC, PFF, UPC, ND.
presidential candidate.
with Uganda.
President of Oh.
We'll take that picture at an opportune time when they all present cuz some are not here. So, thank you very much.
leader of opposition current former and current honor of the right honorable Joy congratulations I want to congratulate all the leaders of parliament that have been given this mandate you know this parliament you're going in is very difficult the numbers of the other side are more so we are praying for you and we hope that you remain steadfast in all this congratulations the shadow cabinet and the different um accountability committee leadership. Congratulations to you all.
Deputy Mayorut.
Thank you very much. Of course, she's seated with the deputy speaker of Nongo and also the speaker. Congratul also have the speaker speaker right honorable um John Mary congratulations.
Thank you very much. So without any further ado Electoral Management Committee.
There can only be one. Unfortunately, we can't save all of you and then we shall work so hard to ensure that that one person that the party has uh appointed can come to this site and join our parliamentary leadership team. So, I want to invite the chairperson EMC Madame Chai Harriet and your team to come and be able to take us through the next phase of this press conference.
But can we clap for all these women who came up to contain really it's not easy and Kalanga is very unique in nature but we appreciate all of you. We pray you don't lose courage and hope it will Thank you so much, Madame President, Deputy President SG L and your team, members of parliament, president, members of the press, our people from Kangala. You're most welcome to this presser. My name is Harai and I'm the chairperson of the election management committee. And with me, we have the secretary of the election management committee. His name is Eddie Kayabla.
We have our commissioner from Uganda, John Mary Seufu.
We have our technical advisor, Robaga Alex.
We also have our members who are not present here. We have my wife who is called Dr. Ivan Simpo.
He had other commitment though. was not able to be with us. We have the Aoka.
Then we have the one for Western Uganda who is called Julian. Then we have our legal person Jonathan Elut among we also have a person for publicity Tana. They are all not present but we want to appreciate them because this has been teamwork. It is not only the team you see here that has worked on this. The people of Kangala, I really want to appreciate you especially the ladies for showing interest that shows that you have trust in us NP because you could have also thought of going to other parties. But by the mere fact that you expressed interest in carrying nationality platform, I want to tell you you did the right thing because this is the best party and we are supposed to be the ruling party though we are great.
I know all of us want to go to parliament and all of us want to carry the nationality platform but like I always say we can only have one candidate. All of you are very good. At least I have interfaced with all the candidates. I want to tell you out there that we had 14 ladies apply to carry nup ticket but out of those 14 we had 13 of them come through for vetting.
We had 13 of them come through for vetting and then those proceeded to the next level of the ground survey and eventually we came up with our best candidate.
uh NUP leaders and Ugandans out there, most especially the people of Kangala.
Your daughters are very good.
If it were up to us, we would all we would give all of them the flag, but as it goes, we only have to have one representative.
We also want to thank the people of Kalangala for trusting NUP the last time and gave us Helen. And we still request that when the time comes, please, like you did for Helen, also do for the one that we shall offer you. We want to thank you so much.
I I'm not going to go so much into the breakdown because in the interest of time, I'll just give us the total. We had the ground survey that takes 40 I mean, we had the vetting that takes 40%.
Then we had the brown ground survey that takes 60%.
We give the ground survey 60% because we give the people of Kalangala an upper hand. They are the ones who decide both.
Then like we again say we also want somebody who can go and articulate things very well and represent the people of Kalangala. So we add up those and we get 100%. The 40 and 60 we get 100%. Then we come up with the best candidate. So we had these very wonderful, beautiful ladies come up through the process and I'll read their scores. We do things transparently here.
So we had a lady called Brena, she scored 16.5.
Then Naruba Betti 22.7 maybe can they stand for recognition? We really appreciate you.
>> Sorry.
>> So I don't read them.
>> No, we want to do things transparently so that nobody says I was cheated.
Madame Clavia, please if you may allow me Then we we had a lady called Babira Sharifa, very beautiful, intelligent lady who had 26%.
Then we also had one called Nasia Barbra who had 27.4%.
And then number we we had Nacho Zeroy a very good lady from Kalangala. We love you mama.
Then there's her how much she she had 28%.
Then we have Nam Goreti who had 28.8.
Then Beatric had 29.1%.
Nati Aisha had 60 had 30.9%.
Then we had a lady called Nintend Maria who had 35.2%.
In the fourth place we have a lady called Nakan Irene who had 35.8%.
Then we have nighttime Mary who had 35.2 sorry who had 45.7%.
Then we have Nasi Wajesa Shave who had 48.7%.
We also have Nala Irene scoring 68.2.
2%.
So that makes Irene Nala our flag bearer.
>> We really want to appreciate you ladies.
But like we've said the grounds what the people of Kalangala said.
>> So that is your candidate and we request that you rally behind her like we always do in N. We have one candidate today.
>> Congratulations Irene. And to the people of Kangala, we present you Irene.
Irene, come forward, please.
So we want to just summarize in Luganda briefly.
Madame President forces.
vetting ground.
That's why fear of favor.

You got 26% forchech.
said Mary.

>> Where's the flag?

and objectives of our party, but also the needs and interests of our people.
Because you know the cardinal role that we have, we that have been assigned in this position is to hold this government. The cardinal always know all this government to account and the past so far so good. I can see the formidable team is well able to discharge that role.
Madame President we are pressed by time.
I would like to use this opportunity that the remaining time for colleagues, members of parliament because we do not have fun these days at least the honorable would lead us very fast to to advise that as soon as the president concludes her speech we rush by whatever means including the quickest activities for anyone. So that you are in the house in good time with those few remarks. Allow me with all humility to invite the deput president nor the acting president of the national unity platform to come and address the gathering.

>> I want to congratulate the secretary general for working and making us work 24 hours.
Not even 12.
12. Thank you so much. I don't take that for granted. Back to back and and making sure we're all here. His Excellency, the de facto and dur president of the Republic of Uganda, his excellency Robert Chagulani Oini, the entire national unity platform neck here present in your various cap capacities and identities. the members of parliament present I know you're already sitting on needles so I'm going to be very brief you need to be going to to to to represent the constituency and also no interest the candidates for n flag bearership and our flag bearer honorable the media present here, the foot soldiers and all who are following us online.
I salute you in a special way. Today we have had two milestones.
We had our main dead and neck missing very successfully.
Thank you.
We have started yet another journey.
The members of parliament, those with aspirations who wanted and offered themselves for some positions.
Kindly note you have this these positions are extra responsibilities.
in solidarity. It's a service and those who got it today, it's a test.
We just gave you a short rope. You will either hang yourself with it or you will manage to deliver in the best interest of the people of Uganda.
Our ultimate victory still holds in balance with all those responsibilities. Every step is about reclaiming our stolen victory.
I want to congratulate those who have been nominated and appointed in those various offices and those who had expectations.
You know you are in the next. You know even being a member of parliament is so busy enough.
Please said that you know I had this expectation that I know you will not because you know there are more responsibilities that are going to come.
There are also still more positions that for example the shadow ministers shadow ministers and deputies. This were just a skeleton the skeleton. So I want to congratulate you all and as you go to that parliament.
It looks scary but my take is when fear opens the door send hope send courage. Send unity.
United we stand.
and divided we will fall. Stand in solidarity.
Stand in solidarity.
Avoid drama.
An outrageous presence. Avoid it. We are not there for drama.
We are there to deliver and we are watching every single minute. We are watching. You'd rather be silent than come out in an outrageous dramatic place because each time you make a move, see the face of Rich. Let her go with you.
Yeah. We're not there to act.
We are not there to act. We are there to deliver. And we are delivering on the blood and sweat of our colleagues. We are delivering on the denied victory of our president. We are delivering on the denied success and victory of many of your colleagues. So you do not have time to have problems.
Go and deliver now.
As we continue to reclaim, we are watching. We are also encouraging each one of you. Where you know you need some support, get to us. Where you know you're about to slide, get to us. We have the mobilization team also still here. And please do not forget the foot soldiers. Do not forget our team here in the secretariat who did everything possible including >> they're risking their lives. Don't don't forget them. Don't you are called upon I will be leaving to go to Kalangal.
The first 100 days in the office I will be seeing and noticing and calling upon you. This is not blackmail. This is solidarity and this is also a presidential call and directing that we can do it together.
So I want to congratulate you and thank you so much.
Honorable Irene Jang.
I congratulate you from here. The government is going to be there with with with our with from here I'm coming with my overall.
Okay. because we are going to be jumping from one island to another. I am coming.
I am coming. I am coming. And I want to thank your father in a special way. The entire Orthodox community, you requested us to be very conscious and we have responded. Kalanga has responded and now we call upon all of you to come and campaign as we retain our seat for Kalanga.
The entire women team here present. We call upon you to be in solidarity because her winning is also your winning. All right.
>> I was in Rome and I was told why are you asking the intersection of the matters here? Uganda matters are the best because they are they are 22 plus.
Why am I asking for other good soldiers when her teammates the running mates are right here?
So I want to congratulate each one of you and implore you that we rally with and besides honorable Irene and knowing the 5 years are not very very long. So let us build it together. Let us reclaim our seat from Kangala together and let us let the soul of your beloved sister that powerful woman even in her death rise.
Stay with us because she has a legacy that she set and we must respond and keep that legacy alive. and you are running it for her and for your colleagues and for the people of Kalangara.
Thank you very much and congratulations as we come for your nomination. Okay.
Yes.
So finally we are running still on the team keeping hope alive. Our team members in their thousands are in prisons all over. Not only they're all over. We continue to demand for their immediate release. We continue to demand for justice. We continue to demand what of oppression they are putting to us. Even the way that we're oppressed in terms of our connections, in terms even of facilitating, in terms of whatever we like to do, let that end.
Prison is for criminals or at least genuine suspects. But this trumped up charges.
Let the state attorneys think with their heart.
We are calling upon the the state attorneys and also the judicial officers to listen to the call of the retired justice.
Have a conscience. Have a conscience.
We're also calling upon the families.
We have not forgotten anybody that is paying or has paid the price through their denied freedom.
We are with you in solidarity.
It is not done until it is done.
>> We are calling upon the state to make sure the terraform are released.
We also demand for the immediate return of our president unconditionally.
Stop the continued.
I want to thank the EMC parliamentarians. We will be coming and we'll be following you and as you go and celebrate also your win. Celebrate your win within all the the operations. I say all this power because I believe in people power >> people power power.
>> People power.
>> When the struggle is over, we shall wear the victory.
We shall wear the victor's crown. We shall wear the victor's crown when the struggle is over. We shall where the victors from in the new Uganda.
