While military service can provide skills, opportunities, and social mobility, suggesting it as a universal solution to youth unemployment ignores the diverse aspirations, circumstances, and limitations of young people; this approach overlooks the complex realities of the job market, educational barriers, and the fact that not everyone is suited for military service, making it an inadequate and potentially harmful policy response to youth unemployment.

Tory Answer to Unemployment, Join The Army!Added:
Hi guys, is there anyone more disconnected from reality than a conservative politician? So I want to show you this clip here from Sky News in just a moment, but this was tweeted out by a Tory MP. And he quoted the video saying, "At this point I may as well join the army." He went on to say, "It's hugely telling that both of these unemployed young people specifically mentioned the army as a career option that they would rather be unemployed than consider, despite the latter having only two GCSEs. The army is an incredible career, gives young people fantastic skills and opportunities, and is almost unrivaled for social mobility.
So with nearly 1 million NEETs, why can we not convince young people like these that being in the army is better than being unemployed?" So I'll get back to him in just a moment, but have a listen to what they had to say.
>> I can apply for universal credit, but I've already done it, but I don't want to stay in that for even longer than two, three months. I want a want a job ASAP, you know what I mean? I don't want to be on the dole. At this point I might as well go into the army, you know what I mean? Because that's the only thing that's on these job application websites, because you don't need any experience.
>> Unless something is urgently done, the number of young people in this position is predicted to rise to one in six in the next five years.
But the majority really want to work.
>> It's a catch-22.
Young people are being told they don't have enough experience when they apply for jobs, but how will they get that experience if they can't get a job?
>> The job market is just horrible. Just it's it's shocking, like >> on Indeed, all you see, people might actually talk about it, joking about it all the time on my four you page. It's care, army, care, army. Or or you could be a retail manager, but you haven't got the experience, so you can't apply for those jobs. There's no other jobs you can apply for.
>> Courtney went to seven different schools within a few years because of her disruptive behavior. She thinks she'd have kept studying and got a job if she'd had the right support.
>> I feel like the teachers are very out of touch with what the kids are going through nowadays. Like it's really hard in this generation, especially. By the time I was in year 11, I was going into school for an hour a week. So, really I knew there was no chance of me passing my GCSEs. I only sat two of mine.
>> Okay. So, there are some serious problems there. But, let's go back to the Tory MP. So, he says, "Here, look.
The army is a is an incredible career.
It gives young people fantastic skills and opportunities and is almost unrivaled for social mobility." And he's actually correct.
But, joining the army cannot be the solution to all people's problems.
Say Saying, "Oh, well, people should just join the army." is a way of ignoring the realities facing these young people. There are no career opportunities for them. You can't say just say, "Well, just join the army."
Like, joining the army is good for some people, but not everyone is suited for the army.
Not everyone is suited for this. Now, let's leave aside the fact that the Conservatives when they were in power gutted the army.
The size of the army dropped to its record low levels when the Conservatives were in power.
They did not provide sufficient funding to the MOD. And we saw a situation where the families of service people were in substandard housing. These were contracts given out probably to Tory donors. Well, somebody was given a contract. The private sector was given a contract to provide housing for service people's families and they were dilapidated. There was mold in a lot of these buildings and thankfully the Labour Party when they took over, they bought up this housing and provided it for these for these families. And it was not rented accommodation. It was no longer money being given to the private sector to provide substandard accommodation.
So, that was good for from, you know, the the the families' point of view.
So, the Conservatives really should keep their mouths shut. But, when it comes to just sending people into the army, once again, it's it's hiding it's ignoring the realities facing young people today. Not everyone is suited for the military. And even if you even if you have a lot of people sent in, uh if they're active abroad, they bring back traumas. So, it it's you know, is there support for them when they come back? You know, this is once again the same Conservative Party that cut or did I should say did not properly fund the NHS. So, you have young people going off to fight or going off uh to be abroad for a long time far away from their fam- family and friends. This causes uh psychological issues.
And then they come back uh maybe injured or with traumas, and there's no support for them.
Or there isn't sufficient support for them.
So, it just saying, "Well, the army is not just a regular career."
There are risks involved, either physical or mental risks involved. And it's important that there is support for service people when they come back from service.
But the Conservatives are not on the side of doing that.
So, this ridiculous idea of just send people into the army is not going to fix the problems facing young people.
Young people have other aspirations. It can't all just be, "Well, just join the army."
Once again, the army is a good way for people to uh to move up the social ladder. It's It provides skills and opportunities. Yes, 100% agreement there. But it's not suited for everyone.
And the irony of a Conservative talking about, "Well, you know, people should just go into the army." when they gutted the military is ir- irony off the scale.
