Pilot Iroshizuku Ina-Ho| I FINALLY did it! I made an almost identical mix to the elusive ink!

[00:00:10]Okay, it has taken me years, but I think I have finally cracked the code on the elusive enho.

[00:00:21]And I think you can make it at home yourself without going to eBay and spending $200 on one single bottle of ink. So if you are interested, stick around and watch my experiment in action. This is bookish artist Mandy.

[00:00:40]Welcome or welcome back. And I am really excited for this one. When I first got into fountain pens, this ink was the elusive. Everybody wanted it and it was so hard to find because it had already been discontinued and it has remained a darling and for good reason. It is beautiful. It has great shading and there is no other color on the market just like it. I have found close but nothing quite like Enaho Ho. The one thing that I love the most is Pilot Ero Shizuku inks. They are just so well behaved. They're fantastic. They work in pens. They flow. And even if the color is really close, they one don't hit the mark most often. And two, they just don't flow the way Pilot Shizuku inks do. Now I have hoarded this bottle for a couple years. Use it very sparingly and a lot of the times it is to find a recipe so that others can enjoy this ink without having to spend the absorbbitant prices that people do. And today I'm going to show you all the things that I did so that if there's an ink that you love, you can repeat this process to figure out how to make a dupe if it's a discontinued ink. Because I am so sick of discontinued inks, let me tell you, cuz I always fall in love with them. So, the first thing that you're going to need is these fancy little sheets, and they are called chromatography strips.

[00:02:22]You can use like a coffee filter, but I have had the best results with actual chromatography sticks. And you need a pencil. A pencil is really important.

[00:02:33]And you need some sort of tape. I use just uh tape like this.

[00:02:40]A cup of water. And this. So what you do is this is your baseline and you put your baseline right here so you know where the ink starts. Now I have already done this for ino and everything. So I'm going to do this for crime and punishment because crime and punishment is sitting here in my choice B.

[00:03:08]So, I like to label it on the top. And you just take your pen or whatever ink you're doing, and you just add a line right where that pencil is. You don't want to add too much, and you don't add too little, but you want to make sure that you have that straight line. I like to do the straight line because then it goes straight up. So, then what you're going to do is you're going to find a pencil or a pen or something that is properly weighted. You're going to take that piece of tape and I'm going to my nails when they grow back it will be so wonderful.

[00:03:49]So I'm going to take that piece of tape right here and then I'm going to tape it right here. Now I use a mug. I have a mug over here and it has very little water and I actually have one going right now and I'm going to put this one in. You want to make sure you avoid the walls. See like how this is in the middle. You want to make sure you avoid the walls and you want to make sure that you avoid everything. Now, you can leave this in overnight. I usually do about a half an hour is is about what I need. So, that is we're going to leave the crime and punishment. I'm curious to see what's in Crime and Punishment because it's fun.

[00:04:25]All right. So, I'm going to pull out all of the ones that I've already done.

[00:04:30]Okay. So, for the most part, I've seen online different formulas. So, there's formulas with Yuya, there's formula formulas with Kirisama, which is a discontinued ink. There's and a lot of times they put CO in there. So, I looked at those inks and I thought, are those the right inks to make this mix? They could work, but what if something else works better? So, I took the ones for the most part, the ones that I thought maybe could be a mix that we could add that are in the current lineup of Pilot Euro Shizuku that are not discontinued now. And I even thought, well, what about one of the new ones because we've got RKA and we've got Toro and those might work best. So, I first did one of Enho. Here is what I ho's chromatography looks like. A lot of the other ones, so there's colorverse tapong is one that people recommend for a a dupe for in ho. The difference is this base color down here is gray. I didn't do it today, but I've done it in the past, which is why you get all these other colors that they've mixed in it, but they have a gray base. So, you don't want gray as your base. And so I looked at Gold Antiqua by Robert Auster. This is one that I think of my inks besides maybe Follow the Water. And I didn't do Follow the Water today just because I was already playing with all these and I didn't want to mix a color verse ink.

[00:06:05]This one is gold antiqua which is another one that I think is really close. Well, you can see the blue that they use is different and they don't use a yellow that has orange in it. And that's really an important thing. And the pink is a little bit different, but that is actually pretty close comparatively. So I thought, okay, gold antiqua is out. Yamaguri has gray, so I wanted to put that one out. Same with Yamabutoo. Yamabutoo, when you look on the back here, especially, you can see where that gray is. That gray base, you don't want.

[00:06:40]And there's Ra and Kosumosu. Kosumosu is discontinued. I just wanted to see its chromatography because I wanted that as a reference in case in case I decide to try to duposumsu, which I think you could actually with hana ikada and yuyak.

[00:06:59]But there's yuyakiro suigi.

[00:07:06]Sukio was one that I was like, "Nope, there's too much like brownish and gray up here."

[00:07:13]And then Miasaki, Shikibu, and Ajisai had purple. So did Acagal. So those ones didn't work either. So I put those aside. And this is how I just went through it. So Fuyu Shogun, sometimes gray, sometimes grays is a mix of orange and blue. And knowing color theory does help with this, but also just seeing what the base color is down here. This color isn't going to work. So you could mix a green with fu shogun or like a greenish and a yellow and you could get like the color verse tap young one, but that's not what I'm looking for. Otaro B was one that I was curious about and it does have it has that yellow, but it's it has like barely any blue and that's not going to get us the tone that we want. And so I just kept doing this and going through them. Toro, I thought Toro has that orange. Look at that. Toro, they probably use the same dye. So I kept that one. I kept you Amma. When I compared it, do you see the difference in blues? You're not going to get the same. This is going to be too green when you when you mix this. And this is going to overpower it because of the way that blue dye works. Same with show row, which is one that I've seen people use.

[00:08:39]Look at the difference in the color. I I wouldn't use this in a mix for for ino.

[00:08:46]Ra was the same way. I again wouldn't use it. So I just kept going through.

[00:08:52]Suioku again was too warm. This is a very cool blue. So then I thought, "Oh, Shina Kai, Shina Kai might be shin Shina Kai might be Kujaku. Kujaku could also be something if I mixed them." But I noticed this Chiku Rin and Hana. So I thought, "All right, we're going to start there. We're going to start with Chiku Ren and Hana."

[00:09:21]And I have these other ones if and when I need them. So now I'm going to pull out what I did next. I pulled out my bottle of Eno Ho as our our tester. Hana iata chikurin.

[00:09:39]I pulled out two eyroppers because I want to make sure that they are remaining clean. And three of these. Okay, let's see. Where's my other one? I did have them all.

[00:09:54]I have water. I have a syringe that I will be using so I can put honeya and chubin in these. Actually, you know what? Well, I wanted to Yeah, because we're going to do that anyway because I want to make sure I have enough.

[00:10:11]So, I did I think this one is like a milliliter. I did a milliliter of each to start.

[00:10:19]Actually, I did two of these.

[00:10:24]Also, honey is one of my favorite year of Shizuku inks. I love it. I actually have always loved it more than Kosumosu hot take. Like I was I was sad for everyone else when they discontinued Hanika, but or not Hanika when they discontinued Kosumosu, but I never really loved it that much. So, okay. And then I I'm going to set those off to the side. Here's Chu Ren. We're going to do the same thing.

[00:10:54]This is a lot of fun for me. This might not be your idea of fun. So, you're going to be like, "Well, what's the recipe?" This is this is my process. I'm going to show you my whole process cuz I think the process is really important because it is meticulous.

[00:11:11]So, I did two of those.

[00:11:17]Look at that water already. You know how colored.

[00:11:22]Um, spoiler, I didn't have to use any other colors because Chikurin and Hanika work. That's all you need, which is really awesome. Okay, I will I will I will spoil that. But the excitement is part of the experiment. Okay, so I had those and I spoiled that for you. You're you're welcome. And I'm gonna use this time I'm gonna use Vue Corona paper.

[00:11:46]I feel like paper doesn't matter as long as you're swatching everything on the same paper. So here we go. So I'm going to I am going to swatch in a hole on the top of one of these papers. I have two pieces of paper here. And I also I pulled these out. So, the reason I'm doing View Corona is because I had a bunch of loose leaf borona.

[00:12:10]And I have it in a binder. And so, I'm going to put these in a binder. So, I remember this like this is an inky experiment. I haven't been able to do an inky experiment in a while. So, this feels really great.

[00:12:24]Let's do one of those cool things that everybody's doing on social media now.

[00:12:29]This one.

[00:12:31]But I only have my, you know, thing here. So, this is Enaho Ho.

[00:12:38]It is a beautiful, beautiful ink. I I really do like it a lot. A lot a lot, a lot. And I'm going to put the real Ena Ho because I think it's important.

[00:13:01]And I was going to use my vanishing point for that part because I already have it inked up, but I have found that my vanishing point has had evaporation issues. So, it gets it much darker, which is not what we want when we are trying to dupe it. Okay. So, then what I like to do, and I'm going to move this and let that dry off to off camera.

[00:13:29]Okay. So, we're going to start with our baselines. Okay. I am going to put Let's see if I can show you. I'm going to zoom out here. There's my baselines.

[00:13:42]I'm trying to decide how I want to put my baselines this time. I think we're going to go like this. And I'm going to do honey up here.

[00:13:57]Isn't she lovely? She is Honey Eat.

[00:14:02]Yeah. Yeah. I love I love Honeya. Okay.

[00:14:06]And I'm going to move that for a second and we're going to do Chiku Ren. And I'm going to do Chiku Ren over here so that I can I'll show you what I do. So, and what's really nice is this experiment is going to be a little bit better than my first one because I've already done it. Now, what's really fun is that browns are made when we mix colors, right? And a lot of times these murky colors are made by mixing complimentary colors. Pink and green are opposites on the color wheel. So that's really fun.

[00:14:51]And here we go. So I have these two two regular ones. I want to make sure that I'm using one eyropper for each so that it's just easier. And I these eyroppers I got with some Opus88s.

[00:15:07]So, I have a few of them cuz I have a few Opus88s. So, I'm going to start with 15 drops.

[00:15:17]Two. Three. Four. Five.

[00:15:24]6 7 8 9 10 11 12 13 14 15. Actually, you know what?

[00:15:39]I'm going to start with 20 because I have enough cuz I'm not going to add any more hina hanana iicata to this. So we're going to do 20.

[00:15:49]16 17 18 19 20. So my han cod at least for now is done. So what I do then is I just take and I do one drop at a time. So there's one. So this then I will take here and put it here and just do one little drop. And I'll come back and label this later with a pencil or thing. And then I'm going to do it again.

[00:16:30]Oh no, I lost Chu Ren. See this is this is a I had little ink holder or like ink vial holders but I have misplaced them. What's really fun too is I I'll show you. So this is 20.

[00:16:55]So I'm going to write ratios 20 to 1.

[00:17:00]This is 20 to 2.

[00:17:03]Okay.

[00:17:06]And now I know that you can I know that you can you know like simplify them and like at the end I might simplify but ratios are something that I've taught and I don't want to I'm not teaching that right now.

[00:17:24]All right.

[00:17:27]So this is 20 to three.

[00:17:32]And what I like to do is I like to do it kind of like a snake because you keep adding and eventually like the goal is to get back up to here.

[00:17:45]So this is something that is a thing that I've learned in watercolor mixing.

[00:17:53]And I tell you what, watercolor, when you start taking watercolor courses, it teaches you a lot of things.

[00:18:07]And what's really fun, too, is uh there are a couple of these mixes that I think are really pretty and I think I want. So now I have all these different mixes.

[00:18:18]Like say I want 20 to two, then I know 10 to one. If I do 10 drops of of hanikata and I do one of or of chikarin, I'm gonna get that. So, we're just going to keep going.

[00:18:40]Get some really cool colors here.

[00:18:43]And what I love is Chiku Ren is such a pretty color and so is honeya.

[00:18:50]So you get some really cool like cuz Chico Rin has some really cool chromos shading effects.

[00:19:10]Maybe you're going to discover a color you like more than Eno Mandy. You know, like look at that one.

[00:19:20]I think when it's I think it's uh when it's one one to two like so it's like two Hana Iata for one shikurin is the color that I'm like oh I like that one I'm liking I'm really liking this one too.

[00:20:06]He Now you're seeing it shift into that less pink.

[00:20:18]This is I'm sure I mean obviously they're using dyes but I'm sure this is how ink makers make all their different inks. I think it would be really fun to learn how to make ink. It is one of my lifetime goals is to learn how to make ink. not just like mix them from other inks, but I want to learn the whole process cuz it's the science looks so cool.

[00:20:48]But you can have inky experiments without, you know, having to do all the sciency science stuff. I've taught chromatography, so like knowing how to do that chromatography is really cool.

[00:21:08]And you don't have to be this precise. I was just looking for the exact ratio of this dupe because I think it's important to know the exact because how are you going to replicate it if you don't know the exact. So this is 20 to9 cuz that's what we're going to do here too. 22 10. So 1 to one or 2 to 1. I really like this ink when it dries.

[00:21:50]20 to 12.

[00:22:07]So, what happens is as you do this and you get back over here, the more you add, you're going to get back to chiku ren, which is really fun.

[00:22:18]I just think it's cool. I'm like, how's that work? I mean, you're not going to get full chur ren because you still have honey caught in there, but look at this.

[00:22:46]This is so much fun. This is the kind of stuff that I like live for. So, I hope you're enjoying this cuz this is this is like half the reason I'm in this hobby is for this because I live for this kind of experiment.

[00:23:37]Cuz even though I think I'm close, I want to do it all so we can see all the variance. And you can see why when you're seeing other inks, you can see why some of them are close but not close enough. Okay. 2015, 20-6, 20- 18, 20 to 19, 20 to 20, which is 1.

[00:26:13]And there could be some other way to do this that you find more effective or you really like. This is just how I do it.

[00:26:21]So, you know, and it worked. So, there's that.

[00:26:32]We all have our ways of doing things.

[00:26:37]I might not be the most precise and whatnot. I'm also not like a scientist.

[00:26:45]I feel like an alchemist when I'm doing stuff like this, but I'm not I am not a scientist whatsoever.

[00:26:55]But I've taught science. So, yay. And we had really good curriculum where I was I got to teach fifth graders how to do this. Isn't that fun? I think that's really great.

[00:27:06]And we taught them about atoms and why some of the dyes move faster than others and why some of them go up the top of the paper and all of that.

[00:27:23]So now we're at where now we're we're at where it's one to two of each of these.

[00:27:31]So, one chiku ren or one hanikata to two chiku ren. So, now we're going to start seeing this get greener at this point because we're just adding more and more green. So, a lot of times like uh Terananishi emotional olive, I want to do the chromatography on that one as well because I think that one is in this range like more green than the like orangey pink.

[00:28:04]But it would be fun to see where it falls in here because I'm obsessed with color and this ratio like for some people like it just looks the same. These ratios for me when I've talked about being hyper sensitive to color I can see the difference in 20 to 24 and 20 to 23.

[00:28:28]Maybe you can't and that's okay you know but I can. And so it's like, oh, I can see the difference. So when I see colors, like even the just difference in dyes that they use, that that is very I'm very sensitive to that. So that's why I like to do this because if I know how an ink brand makes their color, maybe I can dup it more because like I said, discontinuing ink should be No, I get it. I do understand why companies have to do it. Like the bottom line is Enho, I don't know why they chose to, but maybe it wasn't selling and maybe it was one that they found as a rare jewel after it discontinued.

[00:29:15]But what's really cool about it is that you're still using their line and you can mix them and you can get the color.

[00:29:23]So, it's not gone.

[00:29:26]It's just that they took it away.

[00:29:30]So you have to do do more work on your own. Now this green right here. Oh, love it.

[00:30:09]But this is also like all of this is exactly why some are get like you get close but not completely.

[00:32:45]And I could go the other way and start adding uh Hana Iata to Chiku Ren to get the rest of them. And I could do that. I may do that later for my own sanity just so I have it complete. But right now, I think we are good. I think we've got enough data to work with. And I I will finish this. I'll go this way and start with like 10 churu rin or 20 chu rin and go go go back. But right now I am ready to finish this. 41 42 43 44 45 46 20 to 47 22 48 and 2249.

I just love I love doing this because when you look at all these pages like you get some really really really cool colors like this that is a cool ink. I really want to ink this in a pen. And you can take two inks and just do this and come up with some really cool colors. You don't have to necessarily come up with an enho dupe. You can come up with whatever you want and especially when they're the same brand. I've done enho mixes plenty of times and they've worked just f or like not even just enho mixes m mixes and they've worked really well in my pens just like they they they do so it's it's I don't know I I don't understand the science behind why a mixed ink wouldn't work in your pen but I haven't had any issues okay watching ink dry is so riveting I'm sure that we all want to do it right however I think that they are dry enough that we can compare. And I'm going to bring back my Eno original. So, this is the real ENO.

[00:35:32]I'm going to look here cuz this is 20 to 22. When you look here to here, if it will when you look here to here, this one is too orange. And it's really, really close when you look at them.

[00:35:50]in the camera. So, this page, while they're beautiful and they're not fully dry, they are not it. So, we are going to go to the next page here, which is exactly where I'm seeing my enh. Okay. So, 20 to 23 is really close. These are all really, really close. So what I would like to look at this is mathwise I think that the 20 20 Hana to 27 drops of chiku rein is it but mathwise 20 hana to 25 chiku rein is going to be easier to do because this is One fifth. One fifth, right? Yes. No.

[00:36:46]No. Four fifths. See, um, Mrs. Cool, go back to school. If you divide 20 by five, you get four and then it's so it's four to five.

[00:37:01]So that's your ratio. Four to five.

[00:37:04]Okay. So if if I'm doing that, then I'm going to think about this. So if I have five milliliters or 5 milliliters, I'm going to want to do 5 milliliters of Chiku Rin and 4 milliliters of of a honeya. So that would make a really big batch because we've got a 5ml thing here. So, what I want to do is I'm going to set these aside and I'm going to try to math. Okay, we're going to try to math here. All right, so this is one milliliter. I really like this one because it is so small. I also find that it really helps.

[00:37:46]Like this is one fill of a pilot uh pilot converter or cartridge because I fill their cartridges. So, if I go here, it's one and then it's like 08.

[00:38:03]I did the math just so you all know. I did the math um off camera so I could do it. So, just so you all know, I did it.

[00:38:11]So, 0.8 Hana to Chiku to one of Chico brand. So, I'm going to just do one cuz I'd rather start with less than mess this up. So, this is one chu ren.

[00:38:31]I'm going to clean this out really good.

[00:38:36]But if you really wanted, you could dump you could decanter this and dump a whole thing of churen and hane together and get inho dupe. Okay. So, now I'm going to look at this.

[00:38:56]And this is point five. 6.7.8.

[00:39:02]It's kind of rubbing off. I need to get a new one. I got this off of Amazon in a big pack, but Oh, like a big pack of different sizes.

[00:39:13]So, we're going to start here where I didn't fully fill. And this may not be right because with these it's hard to get precision.

[00:39:24]And so, but haha, this is why you do this. I already have all of those test swatches. So, now what I'm going to do is I'm going to grab grab a view corona and we're going to figure out where we are on the chart. The only reason I have to do this this way is because I don't want to make 4 milliliters or I don't because it would make 9 milliliters of ink. I don't want to do that. So, I would rather do it this way and see. So, there is I'm already seeing this. There is definitely too much hana in here. So, I'm going to let that dry. But I think if I add I think what I can do cuz right now we've got I think it's one to one.

[00:40:23]So I think I need to add a little like add some more chu ren to it. So I think if I go up to 2 on here. Let's see what happens.

[00:41:19]Maybe a couple more drops of Cheeky Ren, but that is pretty darn close.

[00:41:26]So this now this is where you're going to have to get tedious and like drops and drops and drops if you want to get it exact.

[00:41:35]The problem is is if you don't have if you don't have uh enough to match it up with how are you going to do that? So that's why I'm trying to get these this exact for you. And so I just want to see cuz I think what happened is I think I pulled this all the way up for Hanikata and I did one one.

[00:41:56]So adding or close to one one. It's not precise precise.

[00:42:04]I want it to be just making sure.

[00:42:11]But the thing about this with Vue Corona is that it dries so differently than it goes down.

[00:42:20]But let me let me see if we put this on the paper cuz see yeah that's drying too orange. So definitely this one this one which is closer match. Where is my lid to this bad boy? All right.

[00:42:42]So, now I want to do it this way.

[00:42:48]We'll do our big swatchy with lots of ink.

[00:43:11]I did a little one here with a little less ink.

[00:43:16]And I did that fancy one.

[00:43:19]Maybe I can make it better this time.

[00:43:35]Oh my gosh. So, instead of dipping that into the ink, I dipped it into the water that time. Whoops. All right. And we're going to write my Ena Ho Dup mix.

[00:44:08]which is four Hana five. Shiku Ren.

[00:44:35]We'll let that dry and then we will look at it and I want to know how close we got. Okay, so everything is dry now and we're going to get a really good look at all of the dry pieces. I'm going to set these aside for now. So, this is all of it dried. What's really fun is I actually really like some of these mixes up here and I can't wait to test them and put them in a pen because I really I want to see what that looks like in writing. I love it. But you can get some really interesting ones and I think I think Van Demon's Arya must be somewhere in here because it does have pink shading. So, they must use pink and green in their yellowy brown because it's more like this. So, it's close. It's just a different ratio of the dyes. And then I think the greens are really fun, too, cuz I didn't finish them. Obviously, I told you I wasn't going to right now, but Chiku Ren is down there. And it is really cool to see all the different shades you could get with Hana and Chiku Ren. This is an exercise that often you do when you're painting. A lot of times you'll just paint like a gradient from one to the other, but this makes me want to do this with some of my watercolors because you can get a lot of really cool shading.

[00:46:04]And this might be something to fun to paint with. So, there's that, which is cool. But the whole the whole crux of this is to see how close they are. And I did put both of them in a pen because I want to show you my writing sample, too.

[00:46:23]Here it is. Can you Can you tell? I mean, a little bit. The one thing I will say that my Enho dupe has is it's the same color. It just doesn't have as much shading. Like, it still has shading. It's just not as shaded. Like you can see, you know how it really gets dark dark. And there could be another little color I could add to it, but I don't want to mess with it because it's so close. It is four hana iicotta to five chu rin. So four to five ratio.

[00:47:00]Whatever you do, do the math and figure it out for however you want to mix it.

[00:47:04]So if you want to make if you want to make say you want to make like a a 4mm sample that would probably be what something like if you're making four milliters. Let me do I'll do the math here for you.

[00:47:16]So 4ml sample if you're doing four out of five that's8 four milliliters. says 08 time 4 3 point I don't know okay you know what I I can't do math so let's just pretend I never tried to do that but um it's so 5 milliliters of chiku rein so hang on two and a half milliliters of churu rein plus two two hana ikata there there you go that's four and a half oh my goodness okay so sometimes math math is hard for me. Um, believe me, when I teach math, I also do that because I show my students that that math doesn't always come easy for teachers either. It actually makes us all work together. And I've learned so much from teaching math. It's kind of fun. Anyway, I digress. The whole idea here is, look at that. Can you tell the difference that much? All right. Now, I did, while it was drying, I did put them in a pen and I wrote with them.

[00:48:34]I used a description for one of my characters that I had written somewhere else and I just transcribed it. Look at the bottom and you'll tell me if you could tell which one was which now that you know.

[00:48:49]But if you didn't know, there it is. I am flumxed. I am floored. I have been trying to find an enaho mix for a while and it has taken me this long to do it and I I cracked the code. I I did it. I cracked it. Four Hana to five chu red is the way that you can get it from a Pilot Eero Shazuku ink. Now, what's really great is if you have an ink similar in color and an ink similar in color to Chico Ren, you're going to be able to get a mix similar. But even thinking about like having a super cool leaning light blue, a light pink, and a a bright yellow, you're going to with a little bit of of of that orang-ish color tone in it. you're gonna get something similar, which is cool.

[00:49:52]But when I look at it, Churin and Hana Iata are both available, readily available. Let's cross our fingers that they don't discontinue those two inks. I would be really sad because Hana or Hana Iata and Chiku Ren are two of my favorite Shizuku colors. But that's that's I'm so excited. And the only reason that the the inks look a little bit more different than than are a little bit different exactly is also I use Ginhow nibs and these Ginhow nibs are a little bit different.

[00:50:27]I think that they're they're both mediums, but as we all know with the Ginhow 82 pens, they can be very different depending on their quality control because they just, you know, they're cheap Chinese pens.
