[00:00:04]I was born in April 1937 in Budapest, Hungary into a well-to-do middle-class Jewish family.

[00:00:16]In 1941, Hungary entered the war and in a remarkably short time everything changed.

[00:00:26]Anti-Jewish laws were passed restricting our lives. Forced labor camps for Jewish men were set up all over the country and my father was taken to such a camp.

[00:00:40]My mother now had to look after me on her [music] own. I was just 7 years old.

[00:00:49]We had to move into a designated yellow star block of flats leaving our home to a non-Jewish neighbor.

[00:00:57]When we were ordered to leave our home, we had to decide what to take with us.

[00:01:02]I had quite [music] a big teddy and a second smaller teddy. I couldn't take the big one, so I took the little teddy with me instead.

[00:01:10]I needed something to remind me of my early life when I was a happy child.

[00:01:15]That was the only thing that was there at the beginning of my life.
