A severe thunderstorm watch indicates conditions favor severe weather (hail ≥1 inch or winds ≥60 mph), while a severe thunderstorm warning means a storm is currently producing these thresholds; watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma, and warnings are issued locally by the National Weather Service in Pendleton. During severe weather, residents should stay indoors, move to interior rooms, avoid travel, and protect themselves from hail and wind damage.

🌩️🌪️SEVERE WEATHER UPDATE - May 28, 2026Added:
real quick. We'll take you on a radar tour, but uh you see down here and this is very rural southern Umatilla County.
This is around the Battle Mountain Summit on US 395. We talk about that quite a bit during winter weather season, but this is in a very desolate part of Umatillaa County. Beautiful country. This is My uh microphone's on.
Interesting. All right. Well, I'm going to go mute until you all tell me otherwise.
Mic check. One, two, three. Can you hear me, Jason? We'll go live. Alrighty, folks. That was a little bit of a false start. Let's go ahead and start this up again. I'm First Alert chief meteorologist Josh Colorth here at the Apple Valley News Now studios in Kenowick, Washington. We have a severe thunderstorm watch posted for the entirety of the viewing area. This area down here for Moro and Numatila counties, this is posted until 8:00 p.m.
for the rest of eastern Washington. That runs until midnight. So, we're tracking a couple different areas of thunderstorms. There's one down here, this little pocket going from Union County into Umatillaa County. This is about to be in tomorrow county. And then over here, these supercells that are or these cells at the very least that are in Yakama County over the Cascade Ridgeline, very close to where the Wildcat fire was last summer, if you remember that. So, I'm going to step off the screen here. We'll go ahead and take you on a little bit of a radar tour.
We'll start off where uh we only have there's just one severe thunderstorm warning in the area. There are no tornado warnings right now, but the severe thunderstorm warning in place for southern Umatilla County. This runs until 4:15 p.m. So, this runs for another 20 minutes, putting down quite a bit of lightning right now. This is right over the Battle Mountain Summit on US 395, or it's about to cross over the Battle Mountain Summit over US 395. Uh, you're probably hearing some of the thunder off in the distance right now for Pendleton Pilot Rock, but this is in a very beautiful part of the country right in the Blue Mountains, but a pretty sparsely populated area. And we're going to take you all the way, get we'll clear that off the screen right there. It'll take you all the way over here to these uh rather stationary thunderstorms kind of around the Rimrock uh area, Goose Prairie area. We have a bunch of the the reservoirs up in this area, northwestern Yakma County. Like I said, this is Wildcat Fire Country uh from last summer. So, those are the only thunderstorms proper that we're tracking for right now. I just want to reiterate the severe thunderstorm warning areas.
So for Mororrow and Umatillaa counties, this runs until 8:00 p.m. And then for really the rest of our viewing area, this runs until midnight. So we've gotten a lot of Facebook comments, a lot of very interesting social media comments today saying, "Well, Josh, it's sunny out. What are you talking about?"
Well, that's the little trick with some of these severe weather setups. The sunshine can kind of lull you to sleep, but that provides more warmth. It provides more uh instability into the atmosphere. And so as we head into the afternoon and evening hours, the atmosphere can work with that and thus you can get a setup like this. Let's just break down the difference between a severe thunderstorm watch and a severe thunderstorm warning. We don't get these around here too too often. So a severe thunderstorm watch means that conditions favor hell of at least an inch in diameter, wind gust of at least 60 m hour. And a severe thunderstorm warning means that there's a storm currently producing either one of those two thresholds. So here's what to do during we'll kind of parse this out threat by threat. Here's what to do during damaging winds. Stay indoors. Move to safer rooms. Avoid travel. Listen for updates. You can find this list posted online at apple valley newsws now.com.
Here's what to do during a hell storm.
Move indoors ASAP. If you're caught outdoors, protect your head and body.
Shield your head with arms ASAP. Avoid driving and listen for updates. We issue alert days, but we don't issue severe thunderstorm warnings or watches or tornado warnings or watches. Those are issued. The watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma. And then the warnings are issued here locally, and those will be issued by the National Weather Service in Pendleton. Let's put all this in motion with futurecast satellite and radar. We're thinking by 8:00 p.m. it is going to be rocking and rolling all over the map. And then by uh midnight, looks like this line is going to start to congill over the Kittitas and the Yakma valleys. Eventually, this is going to run into the upper level low and this is all going to get pushed back our way into Friday. But at that point, uh, yes, there will still be chances for showers and thunderstorms, but it looks like the severe weather aspect is going to go way down. Thank goodness for that. Okay, have some more information here for you.
So, speaking of our good friends at the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma, they are going with a level two out of five risk for severe weather and they have upped the severe wind threat. Now, they haven't upped it from this morning, but they upped it since yesterday. The severe hell threat, this is the big change they've made. the ingredients for tornado now drifting a little bit more towards the south and a line from Walaw Wala to uh just to the south of the dows and points to the south of there. So it does look like the tornado threat has gone down just a little bit for Yakma and the Tri Cities.
I know if you look at this graph it says a 2% chance of a tornado. Is that really worth talking about Josh? Well the answer to that is yes because climatologically typically we have a 0% chance of a tornado on any given day.
So, if we have a 2% chance, even though it doesn't sound like a lot, it's enough to talk about. If there are tornado watches or warnings issued, goodness forbid, but if that does happen, it's important to know the difference between the two. A watch means, again, conditions are favorable for tornadoes to form. A warning means that a tornado has either been spotted by train spotter or it's been detected by the National Weather Service radar. Here's what to do if a tornado warning is issued for your exact location. Seek shelter immediately. Think of the lowest most interior part of a sightuilt structure.
If you're not in a sightuilt structure, we know we got a lot of manufactured housing around here. Leave mobile homes ASAP. They can be seriously they they can be death traps during tornadoes.
Protect your head and neck and uh keep listening to updates. Again, especially with Apple News now and then the National Weather Service in Pendleton will be issuing those tornado watches and warnings. If you're in that sightuilt structure, think of think of the building kind of like an architect would. Try to visualize the floor plan.
Think about uh the lowest part of the home, the most interior part of the home. Basements are best. We don't have a lot of basements in this part of the country, but if you do have one, then uh you're in luck for today. There's also a little bit of a flash flooding risk, just a marginal risk for today, but some of those thunderstorms could put down some especially heavy downpours.
Remember to turn around and don't drown.
Just to reiterate, today is an alert day. It runs through 2 in the morning on Friday because of we're we're just going to sum up here. The damaging wind threat, the hell threat, the isolated tornado threat, and the flash flooding risk. We're going to have a lot more to say about this coming up on Apple Valley News Now at 5. But in the meantime, we're going to keep you posted on all of our social media platforms, apple.com, and you can get like for instance, the severe thunderstorm watch was issued just a little bit earlier this afternoon for Benton County. I got that push notification on my phone and so you can sign up for push alerts by downloading our weather app for free in the app store or on Google Play. Again, we're going to be back uh on air and online for Apple Valley News Now at 5. But for now, First Alert Chief Meteorologist Josh C.

I'm thinking we keep it dry up until about 5:00 p.m. After that, that's when chances for showers, thunderstorms, some of them strong to severe are going to increase and likely going to peak during the late evening. So, for today, very First, I'm thinking we keep it dry up until about 5:00 p.m. After that, that's when chances for showers, thunderstorms, some of them strong to severe are going to increase and likely going to peak during the late evening. So, for today, very warm out there. I'd say hot. 92 degrees is hot. And um this is going to provide fuel for the severe weather risk which again we'll talk about a lot coming up on Good Morning Northwest which starts right now.

This is Apple Valley News Now at 5 on your side.
It is a First Alert weather night as we are tracking severe storms moving throughout northeastern Oregon, the Tri Cities, Yakama Valley, and across Kittatas County. We begin with this amazing video. Apple Valley News Now viewer Aspen captured this video just before 2 this afternoon. She said it was north of Pendleton by Highway 37. The big question, was it a dust devil or a tornado? We called our local National Weather Service office and emailed them the video. They said most likely it's just a dust devil, but surely a sight to see. And a very good evening. Thank you for joining us. I am Austin Reed. Wendy is anchoring Good Morning Northwest. As we are mentioning, it is a First Alert weather day. has a tornado watch still in effect for our entire region. Let's check in with First Alerts Stacy Lee live in our weather center. That radar is active.
>> It's very active. And yeah, that was quite the dust devil. Now, one thing to note is if you notice, there were no cloud formations above that. So, yes, that indeed was coming up from the ground. But that just goes to show you how unstable the atmosphere is right now. Look at this. And I'm going to show you just how much lightning we're tracking right now in northeastern Oregon. And the lightning tracker is going crazy. Check out some of these lightning strike numbers going off right now. Now, there's a big uh course severe thunderstorm alert for northeastern Umatillaa County under the hour right now. And we're starting to see those storms move from the south to the north this evening. And again, we'll keep you up to date on all of that. An alert day of course with damaging winds. Hail is possible. Isolated tornadoes. Well, that's even on the dinner plate tonight as we are right in the middle of the storm. Check that out. Tri Cities and all the surrounding areas. This is the entire area that's uh under the severe thunderstorm alerts for this evening.
Now, the lower portion of our broadcast area will expire around 8:00 p.m. The rest of us are going to have to watch out for those thunderstorms through about midnight tonight. So, just be aware, be weather aare. Now, talking about the tornado, there is a threat 2% or less, but these are very active storms. And as you can see, south of Hermiston and beyond, this would be the most likely area if we were to encounter a tornado. The biggest threat tonight, I would say, between the damaging winds would be hail. I have been seeing hail measuring at dime to quarter size in some of those cells coming through the area. So, definitely want to cover up any of your precious cargo like your vehicles tonight. So severe thunderstorms continue. We have damaging winds possible, quarter size hail possible, isolated tornado threat and mountain flash flooding and that's a more so for the Cascades and even foothills of the blues especially burncar area. So busy weather night for us in the weather center Austin.
All right, Stacy continuing our coverage now. Schools across our region spent the day preparing for the severe weather. We spoke with the Kenowick School District who tells us all afterchool activities will be wrapped up by 7 tonight as a precaution. They are also working with the American Red Cross and briefed all teachers, administrators, and students.
School board Vice President Micah Valentine said that typically a statewide agency notifies them when a storm like this is scheduled to come in, but they did not get that alert.
Nonetheless, they're ready. We're aware of of obviously the potential storm that's coming in just so every parent knows that we do have an agreement with Red Cross and if the community has any needs for example if several homes get get blown down or something like that then they we have a we have a deal where there will use our gyms or our facilities um to take care of the community. A matter of fact our liaison who's who's in charge of this is from the Midwest. So he's very aware of big tornadoes. And >> KSD also says each school conducts a monthly practice of emergency safety drills. In addition, emergency evacuation drills are conducted three times per year on school buses. By the way, the last time a tornado touched down in Kenowick was May 21st, 2016 when a brief F0 touchdown in downtown before quickly dissipating, causing only minor damage to trees. The last time Yakima was hit was May 9th, 2005. A small and weak F0 tornado touched down outside city limits, causing no damage. Now to your top headlines tonight. The Adams County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly accident involving a pellet or BB gun in Oll.
Deputies were called last night to the 1100 block of South Shack Road for a reported medical emergency.
Investigators say 33-year-old Giovani Malachara Hernandez suffered a neck injury during what appears to have been an accidental discharge involving a young child. Deputies and emergency crews provided lifesaving aid before that person was taken to Oll Community Hospital where they later died. The incident remains under investigation.
Franklin County Sheriff Jim Raymond defending his actions in a legal dispute with county leaders. The conflict centers on the county's decision to separate jail operations from the sheriff's office. Raymond claims county officials locked deputies out of access systems for the jail and courthouse. He says this could delay emergency response times. A Walawwala County judge has held Raymond in contempt and issued daily fines. I'm not defying court orders, folks. I have been sued as the sheriff of the county.
>> County Administrator Brian Danzel rejects the sheriff's claims. He says the county follows court orders, not politics. Raymond plans to continue appealing to higher courts over who controls jail oversight and the guns.
New at five, the future of Franklin Pool is back in the spotlight in the city of Yaka as the mayor is urging residents to speak out ahead of next week's city council meeting. Yaka Mayor Matt Brown says he's hearing the city may now be unsure about reopening Franklin Pool by June 15th, despite the council previously voting to make that target date. In a public message, Brown said, quote, "Council said, June 15th, figure it out." End quote. The mayor also called on community members to attend next Tuesday night's council meeting and voiced their support for getting the pool open in time for summer.
>> Council uh gave a very clear directive of June 15th as a uh open date. We also authorized a bunch of money uh to get the pool repaired and and plenty of time to get it done. And um you know I I'm trying to understand why uh this is continuously um an issue inside city government is council says one thing and parks and wreck have not yet announced whether the June 15th timeline can be met. Staff at the museum at Kiwen say they are concerned over a Kenowick proposal that would demolish its building to make way for a new city hall. The proposal is one of three plans. The Kenowick City Council is considering, and nothing is set in stone yet. Museum leadership says the proposal would create a small display gallery in the new city hall, which they worry wouldn't be enough to showcase the museum's 5,000 square ft of exhibits.
>> Well, I hope that they go with a plan that would not displace the museum. Um, one of the plans was to build on the open space at the corner of six and Auburn where there's nothing there um at the right now. Um, so that would leave the museum alone and it would be lower cost.
>> The city of Kenowick says that it will continue to work with the museum and other partners to find the best possible path forward for the new city hall.
New tonight, the US Department of Justice is suing both Washington and Oregon along with two other states over policies involving confidential license plates for federal agents. The DOJ says Washington, Oregon, Maine, and Massachusetts are denying undercover license plates to federal agents, which officials claim puts operations and public safety at risk. Federal officials argue the policies could allow criminals to identify and track agents during investigations. The Justice Department calls the policies unconstitutional and says it will continue challenging state laws it believes interfere with federal enforcement.
Around the world we go. It is a heartpounding race against time to rescue five men trapped in a cave in Laos. And now, incredible images showing the dangerous conditions rescuers face while trying to get them out alive.
Here's Brian Ael.
Harrowing moments deep inside a dark, dangerously narrow, muddy cave tunnel. A rescue diver crawling to reach trapped villagers in Laos. This the moment they are found.
>> Hope returning for the five men trapped in the Lao cave for more than a week.
Officials say the men searching for gold deposits when a torrential downpour caused flash flooding inside the cave system, sealing their exit more than 850 ft away last Wednesday. A multinational team of rescue experts now working to get the men out safely through treacherous conditions. Portions of the tunnel less than 2 feet wide. Some with pockets of a toxic compound hydrogen sulfide.
>> Diving is so difficult with restrictions where you can't move, turn around or or do and the visibility is zero. So the making ground is very slow process and we need to think about our safety as well. The plan is to pump out the water that flooded the cave, hoping the men all getting a chance to share messages to loved ones thanks to that rescuer >> may be able to walk out on their own.
Brian Ael reporting.
>> Following this newscast World News Tonight with David Mir picks up on coverage of the rescue. Plus, within the hour, we learned that six of the nine people missing in the Long View, Washington paper mill blast have been recovered. and inflation hits its highest level in nearly 3 years. Now to more local news. The Walaw Wala Valley Chamber of Commerce is continuing its efforts to support local businesses through community roundts and development programs. The chamber is hosting a series of events bringing together business and community leaders from across the valley. Some roundts focus on industries like agriculture and retail while monthly community cafes give business owners a chance to discuss challenges impacting their industries.
The chamber president says the goal is to create a space for collaboration and shared learning. So any sector that you're in for an independent business you can join us for that. share ideas, uh, share challenges, share resources, share solutions, talking about what's keeping you up at night and and and how you're solving those issues.
>> The chamber says they will continue to work with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and the agriculture community to help support economic development across the Walawala Valley.

The program is recovering after one of its staff members, John Marshall, passed away in December. Students say that although dealing with the loss, it has been challenging. They worked hard to finish the program's 26th home. To celebrate, dozens of students and community members gathered for an open house this morning located in West Pasco. We worked under the house and we like we saw all the plumbing, we saw the HVAC, we did we saw all like the electrical >> and then we did a river table last year.

They're all competing for offseason changes and they're all looking forward to seeing what those changes have done for them um to make sure that their boats are really fast and ready to go.
>> Beyond the competition, the event also doubles as a community gathering with food trucks, family activities, and a $5 parking donation that benefits local Boy Scouts. Spring testing runs Saturday 8 am to 5:00 pm with a midday pause for safety crews ahead of the Gold Cup race in Madison, Indiana later this summer.

Now, First Alert Weather with Stacy Lee >> and we are in a First Alert weather day with lots of activity to talk about.
Kind of exciting stuff for the weather lady tonight. There you go. Uh take a look at this. This has been some crazy lightning. This is south or yeah, south of Pilot Rock to the east kind of out in the middle of nowhere. So, not impacting a lot of folks. However, they do have reports of golf ballsized hail in the area. And these storm cells can pop up just about anywhere just like it is in the Kittitas Valley just south of Clellum. We see a nice cell building up there. We had one earlier today uh out near Rumrock Lake in that area. So again, very active weather. Now the dust devils are going to be playing tonight.
They better keep an eye on the lightning. I hope everybody has their Apple Valley News Now weather app. it will alert you exactly when it's coming your way. 90 degrees, winds from the southwest at seven. So, yeah, the temperatures uh cooperated. We thought if we got this hot out here, we had better chances of uh unstable uh moisture in the air and air quality. And of course, the ability for storms to develop through the region. Winds are fairly light for now, but as you can see in the stormy areas, you have those gusts popping up again due to that uh the storm systems moving through. Severe storm stretch uh storm threats, excuse me, through the entire area. Losing my train of thought there. Um all the way through uh midnight or so, even till we'll say 2 a.m. on Friday. We also have severe wind threats as these systems move through. We're seeing down gusts of 50 and 60 and even 70 miles an hour at times. So, be prepared. Make sure you guys are securing these outdoor items.
Prepare your home for wind. And make sure all your devices are charged just in case the power does go out due to these extreme winds. We also have extreme hail threats in place. And like I said, they're already seeing golf ballsiz hail in this area. We could continue to see those storms build and bring it up. What does golf uh ball size hail look like? This is it. over an inch, just not quite two inches in size uh from non severe to quarter size. This is what we've been seeing for the most part uh during the storm systems today.
Let's track it on futurecast. As you can see, most of the rain starts to move up to the south. It's kind of skirt around, but Connell, Ritzville also has a good opportunity of seeing that. Most of that system will be up towards the Yakamon Kittatas Valley by 9 10 o'clock tonight.
By 2 am, most of these storms will be sitting over the Cascade Mountains with the exception of a little bit running through the Dowels. So, overall, things will start to tone down later tonight.
Temperatures are going to be on the warm side and feels kind of muggy with all the humidity in the air. For tomorrow, we'll see uh cooler than average temperatures. Warm temperatures head to the middle of the country. And on the East Coast, they've got cold temperatures. They call this an omega blocker which is going on in the area.
All right, let's take a look at our 7-day planner. Temperatures drop substantially tomorrow in the Kittitas Valley. Stay pretty cool through the weekend and as we get out into the 1st of June, which is on Monday, we'll see temperatures gradually climb back to 80° and some of us will be in the middle 80s by Wednesday. That is in Yakama. Again, tomorrow we'll still continue to see those breezy to gusty winds lingering in the area. Tri Cities will drop down into the 70s. We'll see the 80s return for June 1st on Monday. In the Hermiston area, look for gusty winds once again hanging around. And tonight, guys, keep an eye and be listening for thunder with the thunder roars. We stay indoors. And the hail is what kind of scares me. I know that everybody's talking about tornado tornado threat is so minimal.
It's the hail that scares me because it can do a lot of damage. So, be safe out there.
>> Stay with us throughout the night. The spotlight is next.

Well, the future of the Franklin pool is back in the spotlight in Yaka as the city's mayor is urging residents to speak out. Yaka Mayor Matt Brown says he's hearing the city may now be unsure about reopening Franklin Pool by June 15th despite the council previously voting to make that the target date. In a public message, Brown said, quote, "Council said June 15th, figure it out."
End quote. The mayor also called on community members to attend next Tuesday night's city council meeting and voice their support for getting the pool open in time for summer.
It is a big night for athletes all across the evergreen state. It is the first day of the state high school track championships and that is where we find our very own Jay Gable. He joins us live new at 6 from Yakima's Eisenhower High School where the action is happening as we speak. Hi there Jake.
Hey Austin, you guys were so close. I was hoping the timing would work out, but one of the final preliminary races of the day, the 100 meter girls uh 100 yard dash 100 meter dash uh sorry tripping over my words literally just happened about 30 seconds before you guys came to me. But that's all right.
It's about a 10-second race. Anyway, the way these girls are running today, I'm going to highlight a couple of people that have uh, you know, shined today from our area, especially, we're going to go with Javelin first off. Chris Espinosa from Riverview High School. He threw the javelin 168 ft and that was first place. He is now the state champion in the 1B. And that for football nerds out there is the equivalent of throwing 56 yards. So imagine a javelin traveling that far.
That's what it takes to get a state record or not a state record, excuse me, a state championship out here. Another person I want to highlight, Benji Du Fault. Now, he didn't win yet, but in the pre preliminary race, he ran just 10.72 seconds for 100 meters. Now, that is first in qualifying, and that equates to almost 21 miles hour. a senior from Lasal Yaka School. He is going to go into the finals now, which will take place tomorrow. It's a three-day event here. Today is just day one, but there's a lot more races, a lot more field events to come. So, uh definitely a lot more happening here. The weather also hasn't affected anything in terms of scheduling. So, things are on track right now as we approach the end of the day. No pun intended there. But right now, Austin, I'll send it back to you in the studio.
>> Jake Cable, thank you for that live report. New at 6 tonight. Central Washington University and Yakama Valley College are making it easier for students to earn a 4-year degree. Leaders from both schools signed a new agreement on the Yaka campus this week, formalizing the new seamless transfer pathway program. Under this, students can start their application through YVC with transcripts automatically sent to CWU. The agreement also includes application fee waiverss, guaranteed admission to most majors, and shared four-year degree plans. The city of Kenwick is planning to build a new town hall, but one of its proposals is leaving some worried about one of the city's landmarks. Caleb Sipkovich tells you about the plan that has a lot of people talking. For nearly 50 years, the Museum at Kiwaden has told the history of Kenowick. But with the next door city hall in desperate need of replacement, the museum's future at the building is in jeopardy.
>> A volunteer at the museum had heard about it and they just said, "Oh, the city had a plan to maybe knock down the museum." And I'm like, "What?"
>> It's one of three plans that the city is considering. The initial draw presented to the Kenowick City Council earlier this month would bulldoze the museum and put the new city hall on top. The proposal would allow the current city hall to be used during construction and would keep it close to the Kenowick Police Station. An alternative proposal, which the museum says that it prefers, would move city hall near the intersection of 6th and Auburn. The city says that while the location has benefits, it would be further from the police station than preferred. The last plan is to upgrade the current building, something that may not be financially responsible. Kenowick leaders say that nothing has been decided yet, and the city plans to take everything into account as it makes its choice. And so we kind of pumped the brakes a little bit and kind of went back and looked at what the we're doing a little bit more research on, you know, what the museum entails, how big of a space it is, what they're showing, what their visitation is, what the impacts could overall be.
>> Volunteers at the museum say that they understand the need for a new city hall as Kenowick is still growing, but they also say that the city needs to preserve its own legacy. Just remember there's a lot of things that go into uh what makes a good city. A good city hall is one.
Good education, good museum are other factors to to look at.
>> The city council is going to continue discussing the designs in June and will finalize a location in July. From Kenowick, Caleb Sipkov, Apple Valley News. Now, >> the current plan that would bulldoze the museum would create a smaller display gallery in the new city hall, which would be around 500 square feet.
>> From Apple Valley News Now, First Alert Weather with Stacy Lee.
>> And here we are on a First Alert weather night. Happy Thursday. We've been tracking some heavy duty thunder and lightning and even some big hail around the area. The most active places have been northeastern Oregon, but we're starting to see some of those cells move towards the Tri Cities. You can see this right over the Horse Heaven Hills made its way across McNary Dam and is heading towards the Tri Cities. Now, this cell should be moving out towards Badger Mountain by 631, Benton City by 650, and then beyond. So, we are tracking that cell right now over the region. 90° great conditions for that. You can check out the clouds uh looking towards the jump off Joe Badger Mountain area tonight. Uh temperatures are still nice and warm out there. Although we've dropped a few degrees in Yakma down to 85, 84 in Hermiston, 82 in Walaw Wala.
Current wind speeds are okay. But as the storms move in, they're going to bring downshifting winds which could be damaging. Now the winds are going to come hot and heavy. So fast, but then they're gone. So still can do quite a bit of damage when you see that. We have widespread area under threat tonight. As you can see here on your map, most of uh eastern Oregon and Washington all the way up to the Canadian border tonight.
We also have threats out in our Cascade Mountain passes where we could see heavy downpours and potential flooding. We're also watching for the severe wind threat uh threats, as I mentioned, as these storms pass through the area. Some of the storms have been seeing winds up to 50 and 60 miles an hour as they pass through your region. And I, as I said, we have that cell moving towards Benton City, so we want to secure any of your loose outdoor items. The other thing notable about these thunderstorms, if we've been seeing some pretty significant size of hail, thank goodness, most of that's been falling in areas that aren't very densely populated, but they were there were reports earlier today of nickel size, quarter size, and even pingpong sized hail. So, pretty decent outside tonight.
Let's take a look at our futurecast and plan things out. Again, we're starting to get a little bit of calming. We'll start to see some calming, I should say, in the Pendleton, Hermiston area. Tri city seeing the rain. We could see some cells popping up towards Connell. And then eventually the system moving to the west towards Yakama and Ellensburg, the Kittitas Valley. Once that passes after midnight or so, we'll see those rains falling over the Cascade Mountains. And then it does a weird thing where all of a sudden the westerly flow picks up the moisture and starts moving it back towards us. Now, there's still a few chances of rain uh through Friday night, but mainly east of the Blue Mountains.
Overnight lows tonight, we're going to be down in the 50s, so pretty warm, kind of muggy. Tomorrow though, temperatures drop way down. We're under a low pressure system and again cooler there.
The warm air moves off to the east.
We're kind of sitting in what they call an omega blocking pattern. I'll step away. It's uh two low pressure one side of the country, our side of the country, and then the high pressure sitting in the middle. So, it creates the omega shape right there. All right, 7-day planner again. Very active weather with gusty winds continuing tomorrow. Big cool down as we head towards the first week of June. Yakama 70s will be back to the 80s by Tuesday on June 2nd. Dri cities will get to the 80s a little bit quicker than Yaka's. We'll start to see that come back right there on June 1st, Monday, 81. Uh do be prepared for more gusty winds tomorrow through the region, including in Hermiston. And temperatures there hitting the middle and upper 80s by the middle of the week. And Walaw Wala looks pretty cool this weekend. And we'll see 80° temperatures return there.
So the good news, Austin, they have just got rid of the tornado possibilities in the area.
>> It's over.
>> That's wiped out, but still severe thunderstorms tonight. And again, Benton City should start seeing some thunder and lightning here in just a little bit.
So, okay, be safe.
>> Thank you very much. Coming up next on the news at 6, why a Florida woman is no longer facing a distracted driving ticket after a traffic stop goes viral.

longer facing a distracted driving ticket after a traffic stop in Palm Beach County went viral online. Court records now show the citation was dismissed at the officer's request, drawing renewed attention to Florida's texting and driving laws.

Live and local news at 6:30 p.m. The DOJ is suing Washington, Oregon, and two other states. We'll tell you why. Plus, built entirely by high school students.
A major milestone for Pasco's vocational builders program. And it's a First Alert weather night. Stacy Lee has your updated forecast as the news continues now.
>> This is Apple Valley News Now at 6:30 on your side.
>> Good to see you on this Thursday. Thank you for joining us. I am Austin Reed.
Wendy is anchoring Good Morning Northwest. It is a First Alert weather night. The tornado risk has moved somewhere else, but there is still a risk tonight. and Stacy Lee joins us because we're talking thunderstorms now and hail.
>> Yeah, well, it's been all thunderstorms, but yes, it was great to see the tornado risk go away. And yes, we have been seeing some pretty significant hail out of these storms in the area. Let's focus in on what's happening right now. We have this this blip sitting over the horse heavens as you can see there. And then take a look a little bit closer as we get closer to Burbank, Tri Cities, Pasco again. 643 lightning and thunder coming right to the Tri Cities area.
This is a live look out just to the I guess that would be looking to the east of Dustevil Stadium and you see the clouds thickening up. Now they may have to call the game so hopefully they have their weather spotters watching the thunder and lightning out there. 88 degrees and again stand by for thunder and lightning in the next 15 minutes or so right here in the Tri Cities area.
Again, when the thunder roars, we head indoors. Damaging wind, hail, and the good news is the isolated tornado chances have evaporated. But look at this. We're right in the eye of the storm and uh these storm warnings will stay in effect till at least midnight tonight. It encompasses a huge area as you can see the entire area in pink from the Cascades all the way out to the Paloo into Idaho and beyond. Now hail to me is the biggest concern tonight because that can damage your property like your vehicles. So again, move anything that's special to you indoors tonight just in case we see hail out of the system that's starting to come our way. Like I said in the next 10 to 15 minutes, Tri Cities thunder and lightning again when that thunder roars head indoors. We'll break things down a little bit more coming up in just a bit.
Austin.
>> All right, Stacey, thank you. The Adams County Sheriff's Office is investigating a deadly accident involving a pellet or BB gun in Oll. Deputies were called last night to the 1100 block of South Shack Road for a medical emergency.
Investigators say 33-year-old Giovani Melara Hernandez suffered a fatal neck injury in what appears to have been an accidental discharge involving a young child. He was taken to Oll Community Hospital where he later died. The investigation will continue. The US Department of Justice is suing Washington, Oregon, and two other states over policies involving confidential license plates for federal agents. The DOJ says the states are denying undercover plates, which officials argue could expose agents and put investigations and the public safety at risk. The Justice Department says it will continue challenging state laws it believes interfere with federal law enforcement.
New at 6:30, a bipartisan bill to stabilize college sports is being introduced by Washington Senator Maria Canwell and Ted Cruz called the Protect College Sports Act. It would create the first federal protections for name, image, and likeness. The bill also requires agents to be NCAA certified and cap their fees at 5%. It also blocks a Big 10 SEC merger, protects women's and Olympic sports, clarifies transfer and eligibility rules, and bans coaches from switching schools midseason.
Also new at 6:30 tonight, the city of Proser is reviewing concerns after cleanup work at Crawford Park may have impacted a feral cat colony along the Yakama River. City officials say a contractor removed debris and vegetation from the park, leading to community concerns about the cats and the shoreline. The city says they have received numerous calls about the situation and they are now reviewing the situation and will work with state agencies before releasing more information.
Well, the city of Oll is moving forward with several projects aimed at supporting future growth. City leaders say a major focus is a nearly $40 million water storage project designed to treat and store water for high demand periods. Officials are also discussing long-term fire service needs after securing a contract with Adams County Fire District 5. Mayor Ken Johnson says more land is also being prepared for future development than ever before.
We've currently had a lot of uh land that's been annexed into the city and we've got developers that are working on the initial stages of uh what they want that to look like which will be adding a lot of commercial area. City officials say other projects are currently underway. Those include a new splash pad and additional park improvements at Kowanas Park.
The Wala Wallala Valley Chamber of Commerce is continuing its efforts to support local business through community roundts and development programs. The chamber is hosting a series of events bringing together business and community leaders from across the valley. Some roundts focus on industries like agriculture and retail, while monthly community cafes give business owners a chance to discuss challenges impacting their industries. Chamber President Arlene Allen says the goal is to create a space for collaboration and shared learning.
>> So any sector that you're in for an independent business, you can join us for that. Share ideas, uh share challenges, share resources, share solutions, talking about what's keeping you up at night and and and how you're solving those issues. The chamber says they will continue to work with small businesses, entrepreneurs, and the agriculture community to help support economic development across the Walaw Wala Valley.
After a full year, the Pasco Vocational Buildings Program is completing and celebrating its newest home built entirely by high school students. The program is recovering after one of its staff members, John Marshall, passed away in December. Students say that although dealing with the loss and it that of course has been challenging, they they worked hard to finish the program's 26th home. So to celebrate, dozens of students and community members gathered for an open house this morning, which is located in West Pasco.
>> We worked under the house and we like we saw all the plumbing, we saw the HVAC, we did we saw all like the electrical >> and then we did a river table last year.
It was made out of walnut. And then this year we did another mantle and it's made out of maple.
>> Several students also received scholarships for trade school, college, and tools at the open house. It is a big night for athletes all across the Evergreen State. Today was the first day of the state high school track championships. Let's check in one more time with our very own Jake Gable. He joins us live again from Yakima's Eisenhower High School where the action is it still continuing right now. Jake, you just missed it. Final events have closed out. So, everyone's packing up and getting ready for tomorrow because there's two more days of racing and events coming this way to Yakima. But yeah, uh today was a shorter day. Things started off at 300 p.m. today and just stopped roughly about 6:30ish. Uh it finished out with the girls 100 meter races and I actually got to talk to Asia Garcia, Azilla senior. Uh she uh got first place in her heat. She qualified for the finals which is going to be tomorrow. And I asked her a couple of questions about uh what she said is a personal best. She ran a 12se secondond uh 100 meter which is like I said a personal best that equates to 18 mph for that entire 100 m so very fast obviously she's been doing this for 4 years and she said that you know leaning up to this she tries to think about you know how long she's been training for this and that she's done this before it's not something that is new to her to try to calm her nerves and when she's on the blocks waiting for that starting gun to go It can feel like a very long time, but there's so much adrenaline when you're waiting that you just kind of want to burst out just like a cannon.
And that's kind of what's going through the athletes mind there. We had a couple of uh false starts on those, but uh you got to get right back up there and do it again. But like I said, she'll be moving on. Um and she was the top of all three heats that went on for her division. So right now, if she does the exact same and everyone else did the exact same, she would be the state champion. But obviously, you're going to have to continue that on to tomorrow. There are 14 different events going on today, but there will be plenty of more going on tomorrow and Saturday. That's it here from Yakima. So guys, I'll send it back to you in the studio.
>> All right, Jake, stay safe because the weather looked a little iffy behind you.
Coming up next on the news live at 6:30, boats are hitting the Columbia River this weekend. We'll tell you why. And let's go outside. This is a live picture from our Skyam network overlooking the skies of Kenowick. I know in the studio I'm hearing thunder. Stacy's tracking it all for you on the other side of the break. Stay right here.

>> Thanks for staying with us. Boats will hit the water Saturday for waterfall spring testing, marking the first onwater action of the season. Organizers say this weekend gives teams a chance to showcase offseason changes, including new paint schemes, sponsors, and driver lineups like the return of veteran driver Jimmy Shane, who will test multiple boats before the summer schedule locks in.
>> They're all competing for offseason changes, and they're all looking forward to seeing what those changes have done for them um to make sure that their boats are really fast and ready to go.
Beyond the competition, the event also doubles as a community gathering with food trucks, family activities, and a $5 parking donation that benefits local Boy Scouts. Spring testing runs Saturday 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. with a midday pause for safety crews ahead of the Gold Cup race in Madison, Indiana later this summer. Quick programming note for you tomorrow night on our sister station, My Network TV, channels 42.5 in the Tri Cities, 35.5 in the Yakama Valley. The Mariners are taking on the Arizona Diamondbacks. Coverage starts at 6:40 p.m. It's a home game from Seattle and you can watch the action live and for free >> from Apple Valley News Now First Alert Weather with Stacy Lee.
>> And things have been getting exciting around here. There was cheers with some lightning and thunder over our studio.
Let's take a look at that active radar.
It's still very active in northeastern Oregon, but we have seen a couple of sneaker cells coming right on through right on top of Tri Cities, Burbank, Finley area. And again, if we zoom in a little bit closer, you can see that storm cell right on top. Taking a look outside, some heavy rain showers. You can start to see those trickles come down. 88 degrees. So, I walked out and I call it hot tub rain. It was very, very hot. Humidity up to 36. Uh, our sunset tonight at 8:37. So temperatures did hit 90 degrees around the area. We had all the perfect elements to see a nice uh well late spring uh thunderstorm in the region. We don't have a lot of them in our area. So when we do get them, they are pretty substantial. So be aware we still continue to see thunder and lightning. They're saying most of this will expire at midnight, but we'll go ahead and extend it till 2:00 a.m.
overnight. So be safe out there. We're also watching for severe winds as these storms move through. Do they bring updraft winds through the region? We were seeing some pretty uh duty heavy hail. Also, we'll talk about hail in a minute. Uh as far as the winds go tonight, make sure you secure your outdoor loose items this evening. Trash cans, you know, uh those trampolines, uh patio furniture, and the like as the winds could be strong. Now, hail was falling, especially I was tracking some heavy duty hail just to the south of Heriston that they were saying was golf ball size. So, again, we want to be safe out there. When we talk golf ball size, that's here. Uh, but the majority of the hail we've been seeing today have been nickel and quarter size. So, it is out there. It is stormy tonight. Futurecast shows that storm continuing to move from the east to the west. It's going to make its way into the mountains where we could see some heavy downpours and potential flash flooding with some heavy rain coming down at times and then some of that starts to shift back into our area. Kind of a weird pattern of that lowle loop. Now, there's still a few chances of showers as we move into Friday night, but most of that will be out of our viewing area. Temperatures overnight will be comfortable, although a little muggy and warm. Again, 57 will be the low tonight. Walaw Wala, 54 Tri Cities and Yakama, 53 overnight in Hermiston. This is what's happening for tomorrow. The low pressure continues to dominate the area, pushing the warm air off to the east. And then we see this strange pattern across the US. They call it a omega blocking pattern as the high pressure in the middle of the country is surrounded by two low pressure systems and it forms the sign of omega if you know your Greek alphabet. All right, Ellensburg 7-day planner. Look for those gusty winds and much cooler temperatures. We'll start to see a warmup for the last day of May and then we hit June 1st at 76. So, pretty uh active weather. We're mostly going to be dealing with winds with some stray showers still possible and in the forecast for tomorrow. Yakama looking good in the 70s. Back to the 80s by Tuesday. Tri Cities looking pretty windy tomorrow with still about a 20% chance of rain. Back to the 80s on Monday.
Welcoming in June 1st. Heriston will be windy and staying in the 60s in the lower 70s on Sunday. Back to those mid and upper 80s by the middle of next week. and in Walaw Wala also cooling down just below 70 degrees on Saturday.
Back to the 80s on Tuesday. So yeah, wild weather.
>> Wild weather for sure.
>> It's been one of the wildest weather weeks I would think so far of 2026.
>> Yeah, it's been interesting, that's for sure.
>> Speaking of the weather, coming up next at 6:30. If you missed the top of our newscast, we're going to show you this amazing video once more near Pendleton caught earlier this afternoon.

>> Caught on camera earlier during our 6:00 news. We want to show it to you in our 6:30 half hour.
>> There you go. That's right. Apple Valley News Now viewer Aspen Corey captured this dust devil just before 2 this afternoon. She said it was north of Pendleton by Highway 37. Austin came running in and says, "Is this a tornado?" And I was looking at my radar and stuff and going, "No." But you know, we mentioned tornado. There was a threat of tornado. It was very low and by uh an hour or so ago, they disappeared it.
It's gone. No threat of that. very very rare to have a tornado, but you could have a tornado anywhere if all the ingredients are right for it to, you know, break out. And severe thunderstorms, you know, spew tornadoes, but this, you know, we're not in tornado country.
>> We do get dust devils, though. So, if you're new to the area, that's what one looks like. They come from the ground up due to unstable wind. It picks up and it rotates just like a tornado, but not coming down from the clouds. So much different.
>> It was really cool though to see.
>> It was cool. That was a pretty big dust devil, I will admit. So, >> well, we've got a final check on your developing weather situation after this.
>> That's right. Stay here.
Thanks for the weather photos. Keep those coming in. All right, alert day.
We've got thunderstorms possible. We're going to say more than likely done by midnight, but we'll extend it out to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday. Look for lingering windy conditions and we still have huge temperature swings as we cool way down to the 60s and low 70s tomorrow and through the weekend. Um June 1st though, coming up on Monday. for tomorrow. There's your daytime highs. We were up in the 90s in some areas today.
And there's still a chance of preip in the area. The gusty winds could be a problem, especially in the Kittitas Valley, but even here in the Columbia Basin, uh just because we got this thunderstorm activity and a little bit of rain, we are dry and it is fire season. So, be fire wise heading into the weekend.
>> All right, thanks for joining us. Hoping your news is good news.
>> Have a great night.

Things are rocking and rolling out there on First Alert Chief Meteorologist Josh Corbth. We've been tracking this line of thunderstorms all evening and uh we did see some of this go through the Tri Cities, but in classic fashion, the bulk of the lightning outside of the Tri Cities, but my goodness, there is so much lightning right now in Franklin County over the Hanford site now moving through Click Attit County and Yakma County. You see that the storm prediction center has now lifted the severe thunderstorm watch for Mororrow County and for Umatillaa County. So, this is the back edge of the severe threat, but we're going to do something right now that I always I I don't always get to do on air just because of of time constraints, but we're going to go on a little bit of a radar tour and we'll just kind of we'll take you through this line. I want to start off in Franklin County. I mean, my goodness, there is just lightning all over the place. From this thunderstorm alone, there are roughly 400 to 500 lightning strikes right now. That is incredible. And I'll tell you what, we can put a little bit of a storm track on this. So, most of the storm motion tonight has been to the north and west at about I'd say 15 to 20 miles per hour. These are pretty slowm moving storms. So, uh, Odell 814, White Bluffs 817, Betty 824, Nancy 828. this pretty rural part of our viewing area.
In fact, eventually this takes us out of our viewing area, technically into the Spokane market. But that's just one thunderstorm. Let's clear some of this off the map here. I want to I mean, look at look at all these guys down here.
These are some big time lightning strikes. And if if this holds together, we'll put this back into motion. If this holds together, this will end up impacting pretty much the entirety of the Yakma Valley. We're seeing some uh huge lightning strikes, right? for not huge lightning strikes, but an abundance of lightning strikes over the lower Yakma Valley right now, right over Sunnyside. We can actually go street level here. So, I'll pause this. We can go street level right now. So, um Chute Road, Independence Road, Hudson Road, if you live out this way to the to the north and to the west of Sunnyside, it is rocking and rolling right now. And if all this holds together, like I was saying, eventually this is going to make its way up the valley. And so this will be eventually a problem for Union Gap and Yakama. And further down the line, we'll be talking about the Kittitas Valley as well. So that's just sort of the state of play right now. Yes, technically the bulk of the severe alerts have been in the Bend market and also in the Spokane market, but we did see quite a few severe thunderstorm warnings a little bit earlier today in the afternoon in Mororrow and Umatillaa counties. We we did have that one thunderstorm go through the Tri Cities, but it looks as if the bulk of the severe weather threat now is to the north and to the west of us. So this is now I would say even though technically this severe thunderstorm watch goes until midnight for Walaw Wala County, for Benton County, for Franklin County.
I would say Walaw Wala County just about in the clear at this point and about I'll draw I'll use the teleustrator here and we'll pause this as well. using the teleustrator. I'd say on a line from about here to here and to the south and to the east of there, you're likely in the clear from the severe weather threat. But to the north and to the west of there, still got some action to go through. So, we'll clear this off the map and we'll go ahead and we'll just kind of take you through the severe thunderstorm watch. It's it's still in place. Like I said, it's still in place until midnight, but I have a feeling that the National Weather Service in Pendleton is I'd say within the next hour or two probably going to start to trim back some of these counties, especially Benton County, Walaw Wala County, eventually Franklin County, but we still have quite a bit to go for Yakama County, for Kittitas County, and for Click Attack County as well. Okay, so um let's uh well, let's talk about this severe thr watch. You see that purple color on the map? We don't get too many severe thunderstorm watches or warnings around these parts, but it's very important to know the difference.
People struggle to know the difference between a watch and a warning. It's understandable conditions that favor hell of at least an inch in diameter or wind gust of up around 60 mph. That would implicate a severe thunderstorm watch. If those things are actively happening, then that would that would indicate a severe thunderstorm warning.
So technically no severe thunderstorm warnings within our market, but it's always important to note the difference between those two things. Here's what to do during damaging winds. Stay indoors, move to safer rooms. The more interior the better. Avoid travel. Listen for updates. Remember, we issue alert days, but we do not issue severe thunderstorm watches, severe thunderstorm warnings, tornado watches, tornado warnings. The watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
Just realizing how crooked my tie is.
Watches are issued by the Storm Prediction Center in Norman, Oklahoma.
The warnings are issued, at least for our neck of the woods, by the National Weather Service in Pendleton. Here's what to do during a hell storm. Move indoors ASAP. If caught outdoors, protect your head and body. Shield your head with your arms ASAP. Avoid driving.
And again, listen for those updates.
Okay, futurecast satellite and radar showing you by midnight, we're thinking this is going to be exiting the Kittitas Valley. We're thinking that this fear weather threat is going to be completely kaput by 2 in the morning. And then this is all eventually going to run into the upper level low and the cold front. So that'll push some of this stuff back our way into tomorrow. Still could have some chances for some lingering showers and thunderstorms for tomorrow. But just know that the severe threat is going to go down considerably.
Okay, what else do we have here? I just wanted to show you that the Storm Prediction Center still sticking with that level two out of five risk for severe weather. That runs through uh this says through 2 p.m. Friday. That should say through two in the morning on Friday. There we go. The severe wind threat still the same. hasn't changed.
The sphere held threat that area hasn't changed. They did drop the tornado. They did drop the tornado risk though. And so now just going with that alert day through two in the morning for Friday for the damaging wind and the hell component. Okay, something else that I wanted to mention is that we actually do have a couple of lightning fires out here. I'm I'm going to walk over to the weather center real quick and I'm going to grab my phone because I want to see if there are any more updates on watch duty if we have any more updates to any of these vegetation fires. It does not look like we do, but the the main fires that we've been tracking, this is the 240 fire, which is now 100% contained, but earlier this was a problem at Dupertell Street in Washington, 240 in Richland. Now, the other one that this scene is still ongoing, this is the Ayes fire. This is burning in southeastern Benton County. This is uh burning in Finley, South Ayers Road, South Mills Road. It's 10 acres right now. Don't have much word on containment. We've been listening very closely to the dispatch traffic. So if we hear anything else about this, we'll be sure to pass that along. Okay. We like I said, especially for Yakma County and for Kittitas counties, we have perhaps another few hours to go with this whole ordeal. So if there are additional severe thunderstorm watches, but specifically severe thunderstorm warnings, can't totally rule out a tornado warning, although I think those chances are very, very, very slim at this point. But we'll send out those push alerts through our Apple Dally News Now First Alert Weather app, which you can download for free in the App Store or on Google Play. And uh we'll continue to keep you posted on all of our platforms. But for now, First Alert Chief Meteorologist Josh Colorth wishing you a safe rest of your Thursday evening.
